The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion – How a Mod Perfects the Game’s Magic

[ad_1]

This expansive mod makes The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion’s flawed-but-powerful magic system into something truly amazing with its varied spells.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was one of Bethesda’s breakthrough hits following the success of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Compared to its more popular younger brother SkyrimOblivion has a far more powerful and effective magic system with a wide variety of offensive, defensive and utility spells to fit any situation. However, a lot of the spells still lead to the same end or have similar effects. This is not helped by the spell-crafting system allowing the player to become ridiculously over-powered with just one or two similar spells fused together.

As always with Bethesda games, modders have built upon and improved many of Oblivion‘s features and shortcomings that have not aged well in the past decade. Among the best of these is “Midas Magic Spells of Aurum” by Xilver, an add-on to Oblivion‘s existing magic system that makes being a mage far more unique and rewarding. The mod adds over 300 new spells of various effects and potencies, each one helping turn players into borderline demi-gods of magic.

After installing the mod, players will be able to find an NPC named Midas at the Arcade University Courtyard. Speaking to him, the player will learn that he was fired from the University for crafting “unorthodox” spells, which the player can learn more about in Midas’ book Aurum Incantatem. In that book, the player will learn they need a set of ingredients to put into this container known as the “Aurum Reactor” to gain an item known as “Aurum Residue.” When consumed, this will grant the player a specific spell based on the ingredients given.

While balanced by the extremely expensive ingredients (including gold nuggets and jewels) and a fairly complex process, the spells given are extremely powerful and versatile. Among the hundreds of offensive spells available are Comet (the player hurls a giant exploding comet from the sky down upon the target), Lightning Storm (changes the weather to cast random destructive lightning bolts on various NPCs) and Midas Tornado (tosses a stormy tornado that hurls and tosses about every enemy caught in its path).

The mod also allows for new creature summons that reference other works, including the mighty Balrog from Tolkien’s Middle-earth (whose weapon the player can also loot) and Centurion Prime, a literal Transformer that can turn into a Dwemer motorcycle or boat. There is even a white tiger summon who, after raising it by feeding it boar meat, will become large enough to ride on and will ferociously fight for the player.

The mod’s main quest occurs when the player encounters the Astral Plane in Midas’ basement, a seemingly desolate plane of existence found through a magical mirror where time and space have no laws. The game plan is to travel across the Astral Plane into new worlds by hopping from island to island and portal to portal, with every challenge becoming increasingly difficult and dangerous as new enemies spawn into the map. Gathering the crystals and putting them in their places will earn the player the spell Holy Judgement — one of the most powerful spells in the mod with its massive damage to undead opponents.

“Midas Magic Spells of Aurum” is one of the most downloaded Oblivion mods of all time for a reason, as its many unique and transformative spells turn the game into a brand new experience for aspiring mage players. Its original content and various quests are also well-integrated into the base game so as to not break the series’ lore entirely. This mod is a must-have for anyone who thinks Oblivion‘s magic system needs an overhaul, or for anyone who wants to be able to fly on a magic carpet and turn enemies into piles of gold.
