Carnage has just brought back another classic Life Foundation symbiote to become part of his army — the most brutal villain we’ve seen so far.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Extreme Carnage: Riot, available now from Marvel.
Extreme Carnage has seen the titular serial killer symbiote return once more to menace the Marvel Universe, only this time, he is taking a much more subtle approach to it all. Carnage has been biding his time and building an army while setting himself up to inherit the Earth in the fallout of what looks to be an impending war between symbiotes and humanity. Carnage has found a few symbiotes to help his cause, the latest of which is none other than Riot of the Life Foundation. This Venom movie villain isn’t just another powerful ally, however, but an indicator of just what Carnage has in store, as well as how close he is to unveiling his master plan to the world at large.
While Andi Benton and Flash Thompson are busy reeling from the former’s most recent transformation, Carnage is just as occupied with both his political and violent aspirations. The campaign trail never ends, but Carnage’s connection to the symbiote Hive means he doesn’t have to worry about making time to coordinate his efforts on both ends of the fight. So far Carnage has managed to bend the wills of three of his most iconic brethren, and now it’s time to send out yet another invite for the bloodiest family reunion of all time. On a bus in Chicago sits a man who appears to be all by himself, but the Riot symbiote he is carrying would imply otherwise. Like so many other symbiotes left stranded on Earth in the wake of Knull’s defeat, Riot has been keeping a low profile while the world around him is engulfed in anti-alien hysteria. Of course, now that Carnage has reached out through the Hive and found him, there is no reason that Riot can’t hide in plain sight as soon as he’s done picking out a more suitable new body.
As the scene plays out in Extreme Carnage: Riot by Alyssa Wong, Fran Galan, Jim Campbell and VC’s Ariana Maher, Riot is just as quick to join Carnage’s ranks as Phage and Scream were. In an instant, Riot is overcome with hunger and begins tearing through every unwitting victim on the bus in his search for an appropriate new host. It’s no surprise that Carnage has been seeking out the Life Foundation symbiotes to serve as the higher-ups in his budding administration, but the way he is going about it does raise some concerned eyebrows.
While Carnage himself has taken up residence in the body of Senator Krane, he has been moving his closest associates into strategic positions within other organizations such as Alchemax where he can. All of this points to loftier goals not just for the titular villain, but for all symbiotes — especially those of Riots’ ilk. The Life Foundation symbiotes have never had an easy life. From being forcefully birthed from Venom to being weaponized and even having their first hosts murdered by one of their own during a mental crisis, almost all that the five of them have known is pain. That isn’t to say they haven’t doled out their own fair share of damage over the years, but not anywhere near the level of what Carnage has planned.
It seems like there is nothing standing in Carnage’s way, and with every addition to his army he only grows stronger. When those additions are as vicious as Riot, that growth is exponential, and precisely that has just happened. After tearing his way through every other passenger, Riot settled on a host perfectly suited to his needs, and as such is ready to join the Krane administration in whatever capacity the Senator needs. Riot might not be the best team player among his Life Foundation brethren, but it doesn’t look like he’s had any trouble following Carnage’s lead so far. Assuming that doesn’t change, Riot could very well be just who Carnage needs to stand between himself and the few heroic symbiotes coming his way.
