10 Horror Games You Should Play If You Liked Escape Room 2

[ad_1]

After the moderate success of 2019’s Escape Room, it was teased that a sequel would follow, featuring the winners of the game, Zoey and Ben, attempting to track down the Minos Corp. The sequel, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, sees the two return along with winners from other rooms to take on death puzzles on a grander scale, including a bank vault and an entire beach.

Fans have expressed a want to participate in similar puzzle-filled rooms, though with less death. The easiest way to achieve that is with video games. Horror games have been on the rise in the last few years, so there are plenty to chose from to scratch the Escape Room itch.

10 Escape Ghosts In Phasmophobia While Identifying Them

Phasmophobia Ghost Mid-Hunt

As streaming has become more prevalent, new indie games can find their moment in the spotlight. Phasmophobia is one of the most recent to achieve heavy attention with popular streamers like Markiplier and Jacksepticeye making the rounds.

The gameplay is focused on ghost hunting in squads of 1-4 throughout a variety of maps from homes to a prison. Using various tools like cameras and spirit boxes, players collect clues to determine the variety of ghosts and earn money. There is also an escape function as players have to hide from the ghost or die.

9 Among Us Lets You Play A Social Deception Escape Room In Space

Among Us Beans

Among Us was the biggest game of 2020, becoming the most literal form of something “everyone and their mom” was playing. The gameplay centers on a group of crewmates attempting to finish all of their tasks, typically represented as timing tasks or simple puzzles, before being killed by the infamous imposter.

While at face value it doesn’t seem that close to Escape Room, the characters are trapped on a ship and forced to solve puzzles or die. This is a similar explanation of the plot of the movies, except the crewmates of Among Us can actually win.

8 Dead By Daylight Widens The Scope Of An Escape Room With A Killer

Dead By Daylight Twins and Lisa

Taking the idea of an escape room to a large scale, similar to how Escape Room: Tournament Of Champions did with their beach scene, Dead By Daylight throws players into an asymmetrical 4 versus 1 horror game where a group of survivors must complete tasks and survive the onslaught of a killer, which range from original characters to Freddy Kruger.

These games take place in wide areas filled with hazards and traps that can work in favor of either side. Additionally, each character has their own quirk, from healer to damage sponge, just like the escapees of the movie.

7 Escape A Twisted Mental Asylum In Outlast

One of many villains of Outlast

While not necessarily a puzzle-solving adventure, Outlast is a wider version of an escape room that thrives in the horror genre. Following a journalist that is attempting to uncover the inhumane treatment at a mental institution, players soon find themselves in a race to escape the institution while fighting off horrifying figures.

The end of the game doesn’t exactly do the plot justice as it suddenly switches to a sci-fi story about biotechnical nanites. However, some fans also believe that Escape Room fell into a similar rug pull at the end of both films, making this game thematically linked.

6 Alien: Isolation Tests Your Hiding Skills While Escaping

Alien Isolation Xenomorph Stalks Ripley

Alien: Isolation is a video game sequel to the 1979 film Alien. It follows Amanda Ripley, daughter of Sigourney Weaver’s badass final girl Ellen Ripley, as she attempts to find out the truth of what happened to her mother. Amanda joins a retrieval crew to check out the abandoned ship, the Nostromo.

The game pits Amanda Ripley against humans, androids, and the titular alien. The gameplay is based around stealth more than action, allowing for the player to really think their way out of situations.

5 The Bakers Don’t Want You To Escape Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7 Baker Family

A return to form for the franchise after two underwhelming entries, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard follows Ethan Winters as he searches for his missing wife in a derelict home. The home belongs to the Baker family who have all been infected with a virus, turning them into murderous monsters.

Throughout the game, Ethan has to solve puzzles to unlock rooms, weapons, and eventually find a way to exit. All while being hunted by the family. Likening the game to escape rooms more, Ethan receives help and hints on the phone from Zoe, which is a common practice in actual escape rooms.

4 Deceit Gives Social Deception Gameplay A Goal Of Escape

Monster Mode in Deceit

Similar to Among Us, Deceit is a social deception game where 6 players enter as regular humans trying to escape a series of buildings during a repeated day/night cycle while stocking up on tools, weapons, and armor. Two of the players are secretly monsters that can turn during the night to kill the other players.

The point of the game is for the humans to escape while not getting killed, and they can vote out other players suspected of being the monster. It brings the fear of being murdered to the escape room method.

3 Forget Your Troubles With Escaping A Castle In Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia Dark Descent Shadow

The first in a well-received trilogy, Amnesia: The Dark Descent sees protagonist Daniel as he attempts to find his way out of a grand castle while being hunted by a “shadow.” There is also an expansion for the game called Amnesia: Justine, which follows a similar plotline, but includes a Saw-esque system of “choose who lives or dies.”

Both games require the player to complete puzzles to move on to the next area. Unlike Escape Room, this series focuses more on supernatural avoidance, but the puzzles are on par.

2 In 1960s Taiwan, Detention Plays On Escape Rooms And Mythology

Ray in Detention with her signature red candle

Detention is a supernatural realism escape game that follows Wei and Ray during the White Terror period in 1960s Taiwan, which was a period of military rule. The gameplay focuses on the two characters piecing together the story they are living in. This is done by escaping from horrifying ghosts by solving puzzles and using a breath-holding mechanic to avoid detection.

Having been adapted into a movie and television series, Detention is an impactful single-player game that Escape Room champions like Zoey and Amanda would play to completion if they weren’t trying to save themselves constantly.

1 Silent Hill 4: The Room Literally Has You Escape A Room, With Ghosts

Silent Hill 4 The Room

The entire plot of this game is for the player to escape the main character Henry’s apartment. Like most Silent Hill games, the room is a conduit for other locations which can be accessed by crawling through portals that appear around the walls of the apartment. As the game progresses, it is discovered that an undead serial killer is attempting to kill Henry to complete a ritual.

Once again, while there is a heavy supernatural element to the story, the plot boils down to solve puzzles and escape, while occasionally fighting back against ghosts.
