Here’s a breakdown of the cast and characters for Hugh Jackman’s Reminiscence, a science-fiction mystery/thriller now streaming on HBO Max.
How far would you go to hold on to the ones you love? This is the question at the center of Reminiscence, the newly-released sci-fi thriller directed by Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy. The film revolves around a private investigator navigating through lost memories in his climate-devastated future after his life is changed when he encounters a mysterious woman and uncovers a dangerous conspiracy. Here’s a guide to the main characters of Reminiscence, and the star-studded cast who bring them to life.
Hugh Jackman as Nick Bannister
The lead character of Reminiscence is Nick Bannister, a war veteran who now helps people relive their pasts. Using a special machine, Nick takes clients into their minds and helps them safely access lost memories. Despite his nature as a solitary, scarred veteran, Bannister is also a kindhearted person who frequently fails to charge his more damaged clients.
But Nick’s world is flipped upside down when he meets the perplexing Mae, who soon disappears. Haunted by the idea that someone can just vanish, he becomes obsessed with finding out the truth about her disappearance, uncovering a vicious conspiracy in the process. Nick Bannister is played by Academy-Award nominated actor Hugh Jackman, who is best known for his portrayal of Wolverine in the X-Men films.
Rebecca Ferguson as Mae
Mae is a mysterious woman who enters Nick Bannister’s life with a request that he help her find her missing keys using the reminiscence machine. While she is certainly a femme fatale, she also displays a certain level of vulnerability that entices Nick. And what he finds in her mind causes him to become infatuated with her, and this only deepens when Mae seems to completely vanish.
Actor Rebecca Ferguson, who is well known for her appearances in the Mission: Impossible series, portrays Mae. She has described the character as living in “those broken moments, […] those shades, […] those cracks”. Ferguson and Jackman previously appeared together in The Greatest Showman, which allows their characters to exude an instant sense of connection.
Thandiwe Newton as Watts
Watts is Nick Bannister’s partner and a fellow veteran who helps him investigate people’s memories. She is addicted to alcohol and is constantly running from her past in the military. Nick is Watts’ only friend, having kept an eye out for her while they were serving and continuing to try to help the damaged veteran turn her pain into power. Watts is portrayed by English actor Thandiwe Newton, who has worked with director Lisa Joy on Westworld.
Cliff Curtis as Cyrus Booth
Cyrus Boothe is a corrupt police officer who enjoys the feeling of taking power away from others. Unlike Nick, who frequently allows disadvantaged customers to use his services for free, Boothe does not hesitate to step on the backs of those less fortunate than him to make himself richer. He is also totally loyal to the incredibly powerful drug dealer Saint Joe, who gave him the power that he became drunk on in the first place. Cyrus Boothe is played by Fear the Walking Dead’s Cliff Curtis.
Daniel Wu as Saint Joe
An opiate called Baca is the chosen drug of the masses in Reminiscence‘s flooded future, and Saint Joe is the man who sells it. Despite being an incredibly powerful dealer with numerous police officers firmly in his pocket, he’s also a damaged man, having experienced intense heartbreak in his past. The character is played by Daniel Wu, who is an acclaimed actor in the Chinese film industry.
To meet the cast of Reminiscence, the film is currently in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
