There’s something powerful about an anime character with animalistic powers. It’s a raw, untapped strength that doesn’t rely on human instinct, which can be a double-edged sword if not used correctly. An animal may inspire their techniques, or their powers could come from living in the wild.
The wielder’s moves are unpredictable and unorthodox, which are sure to catch their opponent off-guard. They must be careful, however, not to lose themselves in their animal abilities. A beast’s power rarely uses human reasoning and can cloud the wielder’s judgment. An opponent could easily overpower them if they’re not paying close attention.
10 Renji Abarai’s Bankai Has Snake And Baboon-Like Properties (Bleach)
The inspiration behind Renji’s sword and fighting abilities comes from Zabimaru, a white snake-baboon hybrid. In its Shikai state, Renji’s blade becomes jagged to resemble a snake-like whip. The sword can break into shards and move on his command, resembling a baboon’s fangs. The technique is known as “Bite of a Broken Baboon’s Fang.”
In its Bankai form, animal imagery is more prevalent in Renji’s appearance and his three new attacks: the “Baboon King” grants him immense strength with the use of a sizeable skeletal arm, the “Great Snake King” transforms his katana into a larger, more serrated version, and the “Twin Kings Snake Tail, Snake Fang Iron Gun” crushes the enemy under a pair of skeletal jaws made of spirit energy.
9 Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez’s Panther Abilities Make Him A Tough Opponent (Bleach)
Both of Grimmjow’s Shikai and Bankai forms have beast-like qualities. He can change his body at will to resemble a panther. For instance, his hands can transform into black claws that help him hunt down his enemy. Moving further into his Shikai state, he adopts more feline characteristics, such as sharper teeth, elongated, furry ears, and black clawed paws. His already thick skin becomes harder to penetrate, even taking a blow from Ichigo’s Getsuga Tensho with no physical repercussions.
In this state, Grimmjow is much more ferocious and powerful. His hind legs give him more speed and agility against his opponents, coupled with enhanced strength. He can now do a “Sonic Wave,” a strong roar used to knock opponents off-balance. Grimmjow can also manipulate his protruding claws as he wishes, turning them into bombs or even blades.
8 Kiba Inuzuka Works Well With His Dog, Akamaru (Naruto)
The Inuzuka clan is one of the many clans in the Hidden Leaf Village and one of few clans that work directly with animals. Kiba’s heightened sense of smell makes him an excellent ninja for recon, but his ego always brings him to the battlefield. He can hold his own in a fight, but he typically works alongside his dog, Akamaru.
The two can perform an advanced Clone and Transformation Jutsu known as the “Beast Human Clone.” The two jutsu combine to transform Akamaru into a Kiba clone, allowing them to perform more advanced techniques. He and Kiba can now perform the Fang Passing Fang Jutsu, a Wind-style move consisting of a whirlwind of rapid blows to the opponent.
7 Jiraiya Can Summon Toads And Emulate Them (Naruto)
As an affiliate of Mount Myoboku, Jiraiya can adopt the toad residents’ abilities. Besides summoning toads for battle, he can trap opponents in the “Toad Mouth Bind” Jutsu, a cave-like structure emulating a toad’s esophagus. The walls are sticky and keep the opponent off-balance, and they can contract and dilate whenever Jiraiya wishes. Once trapped, the esophagus will eventually close around and digest the enemy.
Like Naruto, Jiraiya also uses senjutsu, the chakra form that uses natural energy. This type of chakra allows him to fight in Sage Mode, increasing his strength and physical durability. While Naruto and Jiraiya can activate Sage Mode, Jiraiya’s appearance and abilities are more advanced and bestial. His appearance is more toad-like, with webbed hands and feet that grant him exceptional jumping ability, while Naruto merely has orange, slitted eyes.
6 Zoan Devil Fruit Users Are Some Of The Most Powerful (One Piece)
Zoan-type Devil Fruit users possess more strength than the average human. Their speed and unpredictable fighting pattern help them excel in close combat. In addition, the user gains the physical characteristics of whatever animal they possess, which adds to their already established fighting abilities.
Tony Tony Chopper, one of the Straw Hat Pirates, is an excellent example of a Zoan Devil Fruit user. Ironically, his fruit is the “Human-Human Fruit,” which allows him to change between a reindeer and a human at will. Using the Rumble Ball, Chopper utilizes his Zoan powers to strengthen different parts of his body. Two examples would be Guard Point and Horn Point. Guard Point hardens his fur into an impenetrable shield, while Horn Point strengthens, sharpens, and elongates his antlers.
5 Tamaki Amajiki Can Gain An Animal’s Abilities Once He’s Eaten Them (My Hero Academia)
Despite his unassuming presence, Tamaki’s Quirk rivals that of most Pro Heroes. The Quirk, named “Manifest,” grants him the physical characteristics of whatever he eats. He makes sure to keep food pouches handy whenever he goes into battle.
Tamaki’s manifestations typically give him animal characteristics and powers. Eating crabs, for example, transform his hands into powerful, metal-crushing claws, while eating octopi gives him massive tentacles that can hit multiple opponents at once. The more he eats, the stronger he gets. He can use numerous manifestations at once, but once the food digests, his Quirk disappears.
4 Tsuyu Asui’s Is Great At Close- And Long-Range Combat (My Hero Academia)
The “Frog” Quirk makes Tsuyu a great asset to her team. She has terrific jumping capabilities, making her speedy and agile, and she can use her tongue to catch and repel anything within a 20-meter range.
Besides jumping and using her tongue, Tsuyu can stick to walls, swim at high speeds, and camouflage herself. She can also secrete mucus which can be used for three purposes: inducing itch, masking her scent, and paralysis. Because of her frog-like characteristics, it’s difficult for her to work in colder temperatures. If so, she’ll go into hibernation.
3 The Beast Titan, A Nightmare For Those Who Fear Monkeys (Attack on Titan)
When the Beast Titan first debuted, none of the Survey Corps expected him to be one of the worst opponents. Zeke Jeager inherited this Titan from his mentor, Tom Ksaver, whose Titan looked significantly different. Instead of the monkey-like form Zeke possesses, Tom resembles a ram-like humanoid. Regardless, the Beast Titan stands taller than most of the titans, making him even more of a frightening menace.
Zeke can use his long, powerful arms to throw boulders and other large projectiles as the Beast Titan. His royal blood also allows him to pass Titan abilities to those who drink his spinal fluid. His scream can activate whoever drinks the liquid, instantly transforming them into Titans and forcing them under his control. The Beast Titan can grant the user different animal-like powers, depending on their strengths.
2 Sinbad Has Many Animal-Like Djinns At His Disposal (Magi: The Labyrinth Of Magic)
As the most prominent fighter in Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Sinbad has multiple djinns in his arsenal. Viewers can spot four of these djinns’ traits in the anime, all of which give Sinbad an animal-like appearance and special powers.
One of the best examples is the first djinn Sinbad conquered, Baal. This djinn transforms him into a dragon-like humanoid. His body becomes bright blue and scaly, accompanied by a pair of horns and a long tail. In this form, he’s granted lightning abilities that can shoot from his body or Baal’s sword. Sinbad can also summon lightning, like Sasuke’s Kirin, to shoot down his opponent.
1 Inosuke Hashibira’s Beast Breathing Is Unpredictable (Demon Slayer)
Inosuke spent his childhood in the wilderness, so it’s only natural for his fighting style to come from animals. Beast Breathing is a style only known to Inosuke and combines his unpredictability with his heightened sense of touch and perception. The slashes used in his Beast Breathing forms resemble those made by an animal’s claws, and their names are rather straightforward.
To complement his animalistic fighting abilities, Inosuke has a heightened sense of touch. Living amongst the animals has sharpened his awareness to the point that it’s far better than the average human’s. This awareness allows him to sense malicious intent at a much deeper level, making him a fearsome opponent. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have much to offer in terms of intellect.
