The Strongest Viltrumites in Comics and the Animated Series

[ad_1]

One of the best parts of Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley’s Invincible is the massive power levels of its characters. As the original comic series progressed, the titular hero, Mark Grayson, was forced to get much stronger in order to compete against the foes he faced, and he still flat out failed or only barely succeeded on more than one occasion. Ultimately, the end result of all this was a chain of jaw-droppingly powerful characters with a hierarchy stretching up to the skies.

The Viltrumites are a powerful species that represent the strongest characters in the series, including Invincible and his dad Omni-Man. However, there are even some members of that alien race who are stronger than them. Now, we’re taking a closer look at the world of Invincible to break down who the strongest Viltrumites are.

Anissa

As the cast of Viltrumites expanded, there had to be some who fell to the wayside as far less powerful than the main cast. Many of Thragg’s half-Viltrumite children proved how fragile they were when they crumpled against full-blooded Viltrumites in battle, and even among the alien species’ full-blooded ranks, Omni-Man stood out as substantially more powerful than most of those he faced. However, one stood out thanks to her terrifying power, Anissa.

Early on in the series, Anissa arrived on Earth to try to bring Mark to heel in the Viltrumite Empire, and later on during the Viltrumite War, she proved she was capable of going toe-to-toe with Omni-Man. She would stick around through most of the series although she was rarely seen being pushed to her limit. Overpowering Invincible and forcing herself on him in the controversial Invincible #110, Anissa’s heinous act established her as one of the most chilling villains in the series. Given how Invincible’s powers were fully developed by that point and her other displays of power it’s hard to deny she ranks among the top tier of her species.

Omni-Man

Omni-Man was not the peaceful protector of Earth that he pretended to be, and the unbelievable destruction created by his battle with Invincible that really sold that gut-punching revelation. The confrontation between father and son evolved into a brutal beatdown that instantly became part of comic book history. Considering that the very first punch thrown by the elder Grayson cracked skyscrapers apart and left thousands dead, there was quite a lot of power on display.

Omni-Man would only further establish his superiority to most Viltrumites throughout the series, sometimes taking on two or three at a time without relenting. For most of the series, he was firmly stronger and faster than Invincible, constantly providing a higher bar for the hero to reach. And yet, he was still outclassed by several other Viltrumties.

Conquest

Though Invincible certainly had its share of violence and gore before he arrived, there were perhaps no combatants more brutal and bloody than Conquest. With a scar across his face and a missing arm replaced by a robotic prosthetic, Conquest doesn’t leave any doubts about his battle-tested bona fides. Since he was only injured from the Scourge Virus and even older than the multi-thousand-year-old Omni-Man, Conquest was possibly the most experienced fighter in the entire series.

Given that he never lost a planet in his thousands of years of life, there seemed to be little possibility of fighting Conquest off when he arrived on Earth. After nearly killing Invincible and successfully killing Atom Eve, Conquest only lost when Atom Eve went nuclear, her powers reviving herself and vaporizing half of the conqueror. Even that wouldn’t be the end of him as he escaped 400 tons of metal encased around him only days later and went on to have a rematch against Invincible that left the hero on the brink of death for months. Ultimately, Invincible outwitted him and won their fight, but it was so narrow it easily could have gone the other way.

Invincible

Invincible went on a long and bloody road, but there was no doubting that he had earned his spot as one of the most powerful Viltrumites in the universe by the end of the series. Though at the start of the series Omni-Man was able to slap him around the globe without sustaining a single meaningful injury, Invincible’s powers grew he proved himself capable of fighting the best of the best. Various statements signify his growing power in comparison to Omni-Man’s, and in the wake of his defeating the legendary Conquest, it was clear he surpassed his father.

Notably, Omni-Man did win their arm-wrestling match toward the end of the series, but there is some ambiguity surrounding Invincible’s distraction during the scene and whether he intentionally lost. Regardless, the hero’s raw showings are the best in the entire series, and only one being outranked him in terms of sheer power.

Thragg

Without question, Grand Regent Thragg is inarguably the series’ strongest Viltrumite. Claiming rule over all Viltrumites at the start of the series, the species’ dogmatic philosophy of might makes right speaks to just how strong Thragg would need to be to maintain his position. Believing in that philosophy more dogmatically than anyone else, Thragg proved time and again why he’s the strongest being in the galaxy.

Other Viltrumites hurt their hands just punching him, and the Grand Regent fought Battle Beast for days, despite starting the duel with severe injuries. On three different occasions, he beat Omni-Man nearly to death, maiming him with his bare hands while sustaining little injury himself. In the end, even Invincible could not take him down alone, and it was only with the combined efforts of Robot and environmental factors that Thragg saw a thorough defeat for the very first time.
