Writer/director Kevin Smith leaks the plot details of Clerks III, revealing that Dante and Randal finally figured out what to do with their lives.

Writer/director Kevin Smith divulged the broad strokes of the plot of Clerks III, the second sequel to his seminal black & white independent comedy now in production.

Vanity Fair interviewed Smith about the upcoming release, which shall continue the saga of Dante, Randal and the assortment of characters orbiting the Quick Stop convenience store. The story, Smith reveals, is inspired by Smith’s real-life and will center on a major event that prompts Randal to look back on his life and launch a filmmaking project of his own with Dante and friends.

“The film is predicated on the idea that Randal survives a heart attack, a massive heart attack, quite like I did, and then winds up, you know, deciding that he’s wasted his life,” Smith said. “But before he dies he wants to memorialize himself. He wants to make a movie. So our boys essentially wind up making Clerks.”

Smith further explained that his decision to return to the world of Clerks was precipitated by his own frightening medical episode. Downplaying this near-death experience, Smith elaborated on his script, remarking that Dante and Randal now own the Quick Stop. As expected, joining the underachieving duo are Dante’s wife, Becky, played by Rosario Dawson, and “the formerly upbeat, formerly teenage Elias,” played by Trevor Fehrman. The film’s first publicity photo was recently released, laying bare the effects of age on the core characters.

Clerks III has yet to receive a release date.
