It is said that is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. Well in the Marvel Universe, it’s not uncommon for characters to dabble in both. There have been plenty of memorable relationships in Marvel Comics, and while plenty of them have ended amicably, There are others that have caused major changes through the comics continuity.

While these relationships differ in many ways, what can’t be denied is the importance these characters meant to one another, as well as their impact on the future of their lives, and even the rest of the Marvel Universe. They say only time can heal a broken heart, but sometimes it can’t fix everything.


10 Peter Parker And Mary Jane Watson Lost The Jackpot

One of the most well-known relationships in the Marvel Universe, Peter Parker hit the jackpot when he finally married Mary Jane Watson in 1987. An iconic moment for Marvel, their relationship was built on an incredibly passionate bond, one that managed to balance Peter’s commitments as Spider-Man.

Peter and MJ’s marriage lasted nearly thirty years but was finally retconned as part of a sacrifice to the demon Mephisto in the One More Day event in 2007. A decision fans are still furious about, the end of their marriage would restore Peter’s secret identity as Spider-Man in the wake of the Civil War, and saved the life of Peter’s Aunt May.

The Fantastic Four are known the world over, and one of the pillars of Marvel’s First Family is the unbreakable love between the Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic. After hundreds of adventures together that have spanned universes and timelines, Sue Storm and Reed Richards have been together forever. But their relationship played out differently in the Ultimate universe of Earth-1610.

In this separate timeline, Reed Richards’ proposal to Sue Storm was rejected after the Ultimatum wave, and Richards slowly descended into madness.  He became obsessed with his own vision for the world and proceeded to use his extreme intellect to attack governments, forcing his own vision of peace on the world, which he tried to rule with an iron fist. Calling himself The Maker, he even threatened the whole universe during the Secret Wars event in 2015.

8 Cyclops Has A Famous Affinity For Telepaths

Scott Summers’ relationship with Jean Grey is well-documented in X-Men history, but it was his partnership with former Hellfire villain Emma Frost that defined Cyclops in the 21st century. Together the two stood by each other as the X-Men faced some of the greatest threats mutantkind had ever seen.

But their love was put in jeopardy when the Phoenix Force, the cosmic deity that drove Jean Grey to madness, returned to Earth. After being given a piece of the Phoenix’s power, Scott brutally removed the rest of the Phoenix Force from his teammates, leading him to almost destroy the world, killing his mentor Charles Xavier, and breaking Emma’s heart. Cyclops was deemed a terrorist, and his relationship with Emma crumbled alongside his reputation.

7 Daredevil Has Known Elektra Longer Than Anyone

A hero who is no stranger to heartbreak, Matt Murdock’s relationship with Elektra Natchios is iconic. After meeting in college, their unique abilities and training drew them together, but when Elektra’s father was murdered, she chose to brandish her own form of justice which directly opposed Murdock’s ideology.

Their different pursuits of vengeance would drive them apart, though they would never wander too far away from each other. Over the years they’ve crossed paths as Daredevil and Elektra, and now Elektra is currently acting as the protector of Hell’s Kitchen, as a favor to Murdock.

6 Storm And Black Panther’s Love Crumbled Under The Weight of A Nation

The longtime bond between King T’Challa and Ororo Munroe of the X-Men was a sacred one and seemed like a perfect pairing. Old friends who become two of the fiercest heroes in the Marvel Universe, as Black Panther and Storm. Reuniting as adults, they married in 2006 in what was such an incredible event, to such an extent that it caused a ceasefire in the middle of the superhuman civil war.

While their marriage was a strong and healthy one, it was eventually worn down when the Avengers came into conflict with the X-Men over the Phoenix Force. Storm, an Avenger at the time, left to fight alongside the mutants, and when Wakanda was destroyed by Namor of the X-Men, Black Panther declared all X-Men enemies of Wakanda and had his marriage to Storm annulled.

5 Black Bolt Had 5 Wives But He Only Cared For Medusa

The Inhuman king Black Bolt has known and loved Medusa since the pair were teenagers. The two have always stood together and for years had an incredibly sound marriage that helped carry the Inhumans through decades of uncertainty and strife.

But during the Infinity event, Black Bolt faced down the Mad Titan Thanos, evacuating the kingdom of Attilan and detonating the Terrigen Bomb, where he was presumed dead in the wreckage. Medusa was forced to mourn her husband and lead the Inhumans through an unprecedented era of growth and challenge, and eventually moved on.

4 Hank Pym And Janet Van Dyne’s Relationship Is Infamous

Ant-Man and the Wasp were two of the founding members of the Avengers, and were known as the “it” couple while on the team. Their love was unquestionable and strong, but the stresses of being two of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes eventually caught up to the couple, specifically Pym. Ant-Man began to drop into spells of depression, nervous breakdowns, even taking his rage out on Janet in a horrifying and hideous fashion. This ultimately led to the Wasp filing for divorce.

Their split, while it hasn’t led to the end of their relationship per se, was a large shift in the Avengers. Pym, despite his best efforts to better himself, was constantly cast out by the rest of the team, driving him to more bouts with depression and causing him to seek out revenge against those that spurned him.

3 Thanos Conquered The Universe But It Wasn’t Enough

Thanos has often been called the “Mad Titan,” a title that is quite fitting, especially once you consider that Thanos was willing to wipe out half of the universe because he was madly in love with the embodiment of Death. Thanos was so enamored with the spirit of Death that he did the impossible, collecting all the Infinity Gems in order to wipe out half the universe, to show Death that he was worthy of her affection.

Unfortunately, Death didn’t care for it. Death was seemingly underwhelmed by Thanos’ accomplishment and even helped defeat the Mad Titan with the other eternal beings who intervened in the crisis. Heartbroken, Thanos never fully recovered by Death’s refusal of his offering, making the Avengers villain even more driven to seek control of the universe.

2 Matt Murdock Has Loved And Lost More Than Most

The only one to appear twice on this list, Daredevil may be many things, but he certainly isn’t a love guru. Unfortunately, Murdock has commonly been the casualty of heartbreak, not only with Elektra Natchios, but with Karen Page, his secretary and long-time love.

Page fell on hard times after developing a drug addiction, even selling Daredevil’s secret identity to the Kingpin in order to sustain her addiction. Though he supported her throughout, Matt was crushed when Mysterio attempted to ruin Daredevil’s life by sending the villain Bullseye on a murder spree, where he ended up killing Karen Page, who sacrificed herself in order to save Murdock. Some say Daredevil has never fully recovered from her loss.

1 Captain America And Scarlet Witch Shared A Passionate Moment Before Her Breakdown

While they were never an official couple, the relationship between Steve Rogers and Wanda Maximoff is a noteworthy one. Long-time teammates on the Avengers, Wanda Maximoff always shared a long-time admiration for the Captain. These years of admiration even came to a head in Captain America and the Falcon, when Rogers and Maximoff shared some very passionate embraces together, proving that they certainly did have strong feelings towards each other.

While all this doesn’t point towards an actual breakup, it is important to keep in mind when considering Avengers: Dissasembled, when the Avengers were subject to an onslaught of attacks, which was revealed to be at the hands of the Scarlet Witch. Wanda Maximoff, not long after her escapades with Captain America, had lost control of her mind and her reality-altering powers, and was now conducting a series of magical attacks on the Avengers, with even Captain America unable to convince her to subdue herself. The result would lead to the disbanding of the Avengers, the House of M, and the depowering of a million mutants.
