Batman Is About to Leave Gotham, Setting Up His Next Major Event

[ad_1]

Following this fall’s Fear State event, Bruce Wayne will leave Gotham City, with the Bat Family defending the city while he is gone.

Batman is about to take a break from Gotham and will be stepping away from the city following this fall’s “Fear State” event.

DC’s November 2021 solicitations for various Batman-related titles hint at Bruce Wayne’s departure from Gotham, leaving the protection of the city in the hands of the Bat Family while he is away. Series such as Batman, Detective Comics and Batman: Urban Legends all indicate that this absence will be around for a little while. The void left by Bruce Wayne’s absence will build to next year’s “Shadows of the Bat” event in Detective Comics.

  • As Gotham’s Fear State comes to a close, a new day dawns on the city…one without Batman. But the Dark Knight’s absence does not mean the city is without heroes. Join James Tynion IV and Riccardo Federici as they bring “Fear State” to its conclusion and introduce a new status quo that will reverberate throughout the DCU for years to come.

The Fear State event promises to plunge the world of Batman into chaos as Scarecrow and the Magistrate cause Gotham’s citizens to grapple with intense terror created by sensationalized media, Scarecrow’s attacks and other factors. This has been building in the series since Infinite Frontier #0, which saw Arkham Asylum destroyed in a gas attack and explosion. Masked heroes became outlawed in the city, which sought to hunt down vigilantes, Joker-worshippers and other perceived menaces to society.

It seems that once the battle with Scarecrow and the Magistrate’s Peacekeepers is over, Batman will hang up the cape for a while. Batman: Fear State: Omega #1 details say that “a new day” will “dawn on the city…one without Batman,” but that the city will not be without heroes. Batman: Urban Legends #10 will see Tim Drake going to “make peace with Batman before he leaves Gotham,” more evidence for Batman leaving the city.

This Batman run saw Bruce Wayne’s faith in being the caped crusader shaken on numerous occasions, from arcs like Batman: The War of Jokes and Riddles to Batman: City of Bane, where Bruce’s father, Thomas Wayne, even fought against his son so that he’d give up the mantle of Batman. Bruce never stopped being Batman after all of that, but this fall readers will finally see a Gotham without a dark knight again.

It does not seem like there will be a massive power vacuum such as what was experienced in Batman: Battle for the Cowl, which saw many of Gotham’s heroes clamoring for the role of the city’s new Batman. After all, Gotham has a multitude of heroes to defend it, such as Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Duke Thomas and many others. The city already has another Batman as well with Jace Fox becoming the next Batman like in Future State.

  • “We don’t choose who we save, Bruce. You treat the patient who needs your help.”—Thomas Wayne
  • “Shadows of the Bat” begins here! In the prelude to January’s epic new Detective Comics event, Mayor Nakano has signed off on the construction of a new Arkham Tower in the heart of Gotham City, and the Bat-Family is torn. Batman has long seen Arkham as a necessary, if flawed, cog in the gears of Gotham City—a temporary solution to larger problems that in many ways mirrors his approach as Batman. Nightwing, however, who grew up watching Arkham mutate into a villain factory, believes a different approach is needed. But Bruce and Dick will need to see eye to eye on more than just Arkham Tower, as a new villain known as THE MAEGER MAN wreaks havoc in the streets and becomes the embodiment of Gotham’s broken system!

However, Bruce Wayne will likely return for the “Shadows of the Bat” event, the prelude of which will begin in Detective Comics. The solicitation for Detective Comics 2021 Annual #1 promises a moral disagreement between Dick Grayson and Bruce on whether another Arkham Asylum should be constructed in Gotham. Whether Bruce will be in the event suited up alongside Nightwing remains to be seen.

Batman #117 goes on sale from DC Comics on Nov. 11, 2021. Detective Comics 2021 Annual #1 and Batman: Fear State: Omega release on Nov. 30, with Batman: Urban Legends #10 releasing on Dec. 14.
