Disney CEO Bob Chapek confirms that Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will premiere exclusively in theaters, not Disney+.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will release only in theaters and not simultaneously on Disney+ Premier Access.
Posted in a tweet by Aaron Couch, Bob Chapek, the Chief Executive Officer of Disney, was asked during an investor’s call why Shang-Chi was not being sent to Disney+ Premier Access. “We think it’s going to be an interesting experiment for us. It has only a 45-day window,” Chapek said. Chapek also said that Disney will consider how the film does only in theaters and use that to inform its release decisions on future films.
Why not send #ShangChi to Premier Access? Chapek: “We think it’s going to be an interesting experiment for us. It has only a 45-day window.” Says Disney will look at how it does to inform decisions on future titles.

This news comes after speculation that the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film would be a dual release in theaters and Disney+ Premier Access after a change in the film’s marketing language. The promotional materials for Shang-Chi had switched the phrase “only in theaters” to “in theaters,” suggesting a possible Disney+ release as well as theatrical but, as Chapek confirmed, this is not the case.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrives in theaters on Sept. 3 and is the second film in the MCU’s Phase 4, the first being Black Widow, which had a dual release in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access. Chapek confirmed in May 2021 that Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi would skip a Disney+ release entirely and play in theaters for 45 days before moving on to streaming and PVOD. This 45-day window is significantly shorter than the traditional 90-day time frame, which was once considered the industry standard.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Daniel Callaham, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi and arrives in theaters Sept. 3.
