As much as fans would love to see Hugh Jackman play Wolverine again, the actor has confirmed once again that he will not reprise the role.
To fans, Hugh Jackman is the Wolverine. So far, he’s the only actor to ever don the claws for a live-action adaptation of the classic comics character that debuted all the way back in 1974. Now, more than four years after Logan brought Jackman’s seventeen-year journey as the Wolverine to an end, many fans still cannot accept the fact that his time as the character is over.
Unlike some superheroes, where it seems like there’s a revolving door between the actors that portray them, Jackman offered a sense of stability to the role of Wolverine. His portrayal of the character received nothing but positive reviews over the years, and that success is why fans want him back. The problem is that Jackman himself seems to have moved on, so fans need to start coming to grips with that fact as well.
All of this started in 2017 with James Mangold’s Logan. At the end of the film, fans were shocked to see the Wolverine gruesomely killed off. Because of this, many people thought that Logan was supposed to be a niche-type film. It wouldn’t be the first time that a director killed off a superhero for the sake of telling a story that was outside of the “canon” sequence of films. So, they expected that the Wolverine could just be in whatever movie came next like nothing ever happened. For that matter, others thought that Jackman’s Wolverine could simply be resurrected and continue on with the new phase of Young Mutants that Logan seemingly started.
However, contrary to fans’ wishes and expectations, reports started to emerge that Jackman was done with the role and was not going to return as the Wolverine for any future movies. Many people simply didn’t accept that fact, and many still haven’t accepted it four years later because there are constant rumors and conspiracy theories that Jackman is secretly planning a comeback – this time as a member of the MCU.
For example, just last month, Jackman’s Instagram story featured a picture of some Bosslogic artwork depicting the Wolverine’s claws. Shortly after that, Jackman posted another story that was a picture of himself with President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige. That was enough to ignite the rumor mill fires that seemingly always smolder, and fans were once again fanning the flames.
The thing is, Jackman has repeatedly dismissed the idea of a reprisal, and has once again done so. While promoting his new movie Reminiscence, he tried to give a definitive answer to quell the conspiracy theories when he told YouTuber Jake Hamilton that the “fact that I’m hearing about this from you, and there’s nothing in my inbox from Kevin Feige means it’s probably, no matter what idea I came up with, not on the table.” Yes, Jackman used the word “probably,” but the fact remains that he has seemingly sheathed his claws for the last time.
Jackman tried to explain himself by talking about the closure he had with the character while filming Logan. He said, “And I thought this is it. And that really helped me, it really helped knowing I was going into my last season, that it was my last season that I made the most of it. And it’s still a character I hold close to my heart. But I know it’s done.”
The fact is that Logan gave a definitive end to Jackman’s journey as the Wolverine. He built his character, he developed him and after seventeen years, he was able to send him off in a heroic and sacrificial way. Logan provided a proper send-off for Jackman’s character, and the film was also a critically acclaimed success boasting a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, no one believes Disney/Marvel won’t resurrect Wolverine, and it will likely happen sooner rather than later. However, he likely won’t be played by Jackman.
Even with all of that, who knows what the future may hold? Ewan McGregor lied about his role in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi for years before breaking the news about his reprisal as the famed Jedi Master. So, there’s nothing saying that, theoretically, Jackman couldn’t be doing the same thing. True or not, it doesn’t seem like rumors of his return are going to stop any time soon.
