James Gunn Teases More MCU Deaths Coming in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

While contrasting the Guardians of the Galaxy with the Suicide Squad, James Gunn seemed to hint at some major deaths in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

While discussing his new film, The Suicide Squad, writer/director James Gunn also laid some major hints that the final film in his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy will include some major deaths.

The topic came up when Gunn was interviewed by Entertainment Tonight‘s Ash Crossan about his new movie and how the threat of death is a much bigger deal in this film than it ever was in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies…at least the first two films, that is.

Gunn explained that the danger to the characters in The Suicide Squad is, in general, a lot different from Guardians, since the Squad characters are a good deal more vicious. He noted, “Guardians of the Galaxy has a family film element to it, so I’m telling that story to a lot of different people. When Rocket says to Drax, ‘I’m gonna shoot you in the face and kill you,’ we don’t as an audience think in two seconds he’s going to pull out his gun and we’re going to see Drax’s face disappear. In this movie, The Suicide Squad, they say they’re going to shoot each other in the face, and they not only say it, they actually do it. We know that can happen at any time.”

However, while taking the comparison a step further, Gunn gave a major hint as to what to expect in his final Guardians film. He pointed out that there in Squad, there is “a much bigger sense of danger for all of our characters because we know all of them could die. Whereas in Guardians, yes, obviously I killed Yondu, I killed the big original Groot, but it isn’t the same thing. We know most of them are going to make it out alive. At least for two movies.”

That certainly suggests that all bets could be off for the third movie. Especially since it is Gunn’s last film in the series and he believes it will be Dave Bautista’s final film in the franchise, as well, adding, “I see it as being my last Guardians movie. I know [Drax actor] Dave [Bautista] sees it as being his last Guardians movie, and Dave and I are pretty much attached to the hip on those projects. So I don’t see me going on and doing any more after that.”

With it being a last Guardians film, that carries a lot more freedom for characters to be killed.
