A new poster for Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings shows the superhero wielding the rings that confer mystical power.
A newly released poster for Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings portrays the superhero using the eponymous rings on which the legend is based.
Marvel dropped the poster in anticipation of the upcoming epic’s debut in Los Angeles next week, to be followed by wide release next month. The intense portraiture depicts Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi wielding the powerful rings of his father Wenwu, the arm bands of unknown origin that bestow mystical abilities on their user.
The two-hour-plus movie will be part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first MCU entry featuring Liu. The poster image is complemented by the promise, “A Marvel legend will rise,” strongly hinting that Ten Rings is merely the beginning of Liu’s tenure as the MCU’s Master of Kung Fu.
The rings in question are known as “Mandarin’s Rings,” referring to Wenwu’s alias, and after them were named the Ten Rings terrorist organization, which uses the rings as their symbol. Having “raised secrecy to an art form,” according to Nick Fury, little is understood about the Ten Rings, except that the shadowy group is led by Mandarin and aims for the destruction of world peace. Hired by Obadiah Stane to kidnap Tony Stark, they made an intimidating name for themselves in 2008’s Iron Man, and are now poised to build on that name in their struggle against Shang-Chi.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Dave Callaham. It stars Simu Liu, Tony Leung, Awkwafina and Michelle Yeoh, opening in theaters on Sept. 3.
