Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Confirmed as Gunn’s Franchise Finale

James Gunn reiterates that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be his last Guardians project – but leaves the door open on doing more with Marvel.

For James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is his final Guardians entry — and he’s okay with that.

When asked by Entertainment Tonight whether the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film is his “swan song,” Gunn agreed but didn’t completely rule out returning to Marvel later on. “The last Marvel project, who knows, but last… I see it as my last Guardians movie,” he stated. I’m a guy who never says never because I’ve seen too many people say never and be pulled back into the fray… But I see it as being my last Guardians movie.”

Gunn also compared his decision with that of collaborator Dave Bautista, who confirmed that he will leave his Drax the Destroyer MCU role after Vol. 3. “I know Dave sees it as being his last Guardians movie and Dave and I are pretty much attached to the hip on those projects so… I don’t see me going on and doing any more after that,” the director continued.

Recently, Gunn’s first DC movie, The Suicide Squad, debuted to critical acclaim and currently boasts a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the best-received DC Extended Universe entries but not the highest-rated anymore. The film made $25.65 million in its opening weekend but fell short of box office projections that it would exceed $30 million. Gunn also recently finished filming HBO Max’s Peacemaker, a spinoff series focusing on John Cena’s titular character, and said during the Entertainment Tonight interview, “I direct five of the eight episodes. Next season, I hope to direct all of the episodes.”

Beyond Vol. 3, multiple Guardians characters will star alongside Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman in Taika Waititi’s 2022 film Thor: Love and Thunder. They’ll then appear in Gunn’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special later that year. He recently revealed that, in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic pushing back a number of Marvel Phase 4 projects, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s schedule was not hurt by these delays.

The final Guardians film directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters May 5, 2023.
