In Guardians of the Galaxy, Hercules learns the true history of the Prince of Power. who is wielding one of Marvel’s most powerful Infinity Stones.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1, available now from Marvel.
The Infinity Stones are some of the most iconic artifacts in the Marvel Universe, and the Infinite Destinies crossover has brought them back to the forefront as they’ve found new wielders. Each of the Infinity Stones has found a living host to inhabit, and so far they have all turned out to be far more than looks would imply. However, the Power Stone has been passed down to the Prince of Power, an oafish character who is essentially Marvel’s He-Man. And as Al Ewing, Flaviano, Rachelle Rosenberg and Cory Petit’s Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1 reveals, he is more incompetent than any ally the Guardians of the Galaxy ever realzed.
While current Guardian Hercules is at a cosmic bar, the Prince of Power decides to finally give Hercules his life story in the middle of a fight with some alien assailants that were hot on his tail. Much like his wardrobe and name would imply, the Prince of Power serves as something of a commentary on He-Man, one that reflects poorly on the character.
When Otherone first appeared in the Marvel Universe during 2020’s Guardians of the Galaxy #3 by Al Ewing, Nina Vakueva, Chris Sprouse, and Juan Cabal, he was working alongside Blackjack O’Hare of Black Bunny Solutions. He tried to murder Rocket Raccoon on his first mission, which naturally brought him into conflict with the Guardians of the Galaxy. While that was unsuccessful, Prince of Power did get a chance to show Hercules just what he could do with the powers he was supposedly given by a wizard. Now, the whole truth of his origin has finally come out, and it is much more ridiculous than anyone could have guessed.
Born into royalty on a technicality on the planet Muscular, Otherone was brought into the world as a precaution to protect his baby brother, the proper heir to the throne. While his sibling became even more of a He-Man pastiche than Otherone eventually would become, he was relegated to a boring life of bureaucratic busywork. Everything changed while sitting at his desk eating jellybeans when Otherone reached for a piece of candy only to consume the Power Stone instead. While the Power Stone didn’t augment his relatively low intelligence, the Power Stone increased his strength and gave him a dramatic new appearance that homages The New Adventures of He-Man’s titular hero. While his brother fought a cartoonish war against a brightly colored Skeletor proxy, the newly self-proclaimed Prince of Power decided to join in the fight for himself.
With only the purest of intentions, the Prince of Power attempted to strike a fatal blow against the forces of evil, only to see his own world end due to his actions. Today, that distinct lack of forethought is still getting him in trouble, which is exactly why he needs a mentor like Hercules in his life.
Hercules might not seem like the most likely candidate to show Otherone the ropes of being a real hero, especially not with their less than friendly shared history. However, the two are joined by their shared use of the “Prince of Power” moniker, which Hercules used for several years. While he was never quite as clueless as this Prince of Power, he does know what it’s like to be out of touch with the rest of the universe. And now, Hercules may be the only person who can save the Marvel Universe from the Prince of Power’s destructive naivety.
