James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad likely won’t reach the $30 million in earnings it was projected to reach during its opening weekend in theaters.
Warner Bros.’ The Suicide Squad is on track to grab the #1 spot at the box office this weekend, but still fall short of expectations.
James Gunn’s R-rated supervillain film is estimated to bring in a three-day gross of $25.65 million, according to a new report from Variety. The film was initially projected to bring in $30 million in its first weekend of release.
Despite falling a tad short of projections, The Suicide Squad jumped ahead of Disney’s Jungle Cruise, which pulled in an additional $14.9 million in its second week of release for the #2 spot. That film’s overall earnings currently sit at $64.5 million. Meanwhile, M. Night Shyamalan’s Old is expected to secure the #3 spot on the box office chart by adding $3.82 million, and Marvel’s Black Widow will likely finish in fourth place thanks to bringing in $3.59 million more this weekend.
News of The Suicide Squad’s box office debut came just hours after the city of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, announced that Edmonton City Hall would be renamed the Nathan Fillion Civilian Pavilion for two days in honor of the actor’s portrayal of supervillain T.D.K. in the film. “It’s great that so many Edmontonians see the humor in it and it’s been particularly exciting to see the video responses from Mr. Fillion’s co-stars on The Suicide Squad,” the city said in a press release. “We love to see Edmontonians so engaged with their city and its public places. We hope residents will keep sharing their excitement and ideas.”
The campaign for Edmonton City Hall to be temporarily renamed came about as the result of a Change.org petition asking to name a new park in Edmonton “The Nathan Fillion Civilian Pavilion” in honor of the famous actor and former Edmonton resident. Director James Gunn even got in on the fun, stating in a video posted in support of the petition, “There needs to be a Nathan Fillion Civilian Pavilion somewhere.”
Released on August 6, The Suicide Squad the film brought in $12 million from 4,002 theaters on Friday alone, and has received generally favorable reviews from both critics and fans. The film currently holds a 93% Certified Fresh rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. The Suicide Squad is in theaters now and streaming on HBO Max.
