WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Transformers: Beast Wars #6 by Erik Burnham, Josh Burcham and Jake M. Wood, on sale now.
One of the most pivotal Beast Wars stories in both the cartoon and the recently launched IDW comic book is Dinobot’s defection to the Maximal faction. This move earns him a new allegiance, new allies and several new enemies. In the show, Dinobot fights valiantly against the Predacons alongside his new teammates, but the situation goes a bit differently for him in the comic.
A huge factor in the first major battle against the Predacons, Dinobot decimates his old Predacon partners before they quickly do the same to him. Here’s how Dinobot’s treachery earns him Megatron’s scorn and potentially debilitating injuries.
In the previous issue, Nyx and Dinobot had a conversation about why he left the Predacon faction, as well as the truth behind the Maximal/Predacon conflict. This showed Nyx the valor in the new Maximal’s spark, prompting her to release him while the Maximal ship, the Axalon, being ambushed by Megatron and the Predacons.
Once Dinobot enters the fray, the battle quickly turns in the Maximal’s favor. Dinobot literally disarms Waspinator, and in general, most of the other Maximals begin putting up more of a fight against their opponents. This proves Dinobot’s loyalty to his new faction, all the while ensuring the loss of the battle for his former team. The battle enters its climax when Rattrap restores the Axalon’s damaged defense system, which puts the ship’s forcefield back up. Unfortunately for Dinobot, this leaves him in an exceptionally vulnerable position.
As Dinobot’s coding was still that of a Predacon’s, the Axalon’s shield didn’t recognize him and thus shut him out of its protection. Thus, he was on the outside with Megatron and the Predacons, who were none too pleased with what he had done. Tarantulas began the vengeful assault by stabbing Dinobot through the back as the Predacons felt he had done to them. Megatron continues the bloodbath before the rest of the group joined in, brutally beating Dinobot without relief.
The Maximals retaliate by activating the Axalon’s long-range weapons, forcing the Predacons to retreat. Dinobot is shown later to have recovered, but his injuries are still grievous. In fact, the prehistoric former Predacon suggests that he even leave the Maximals, as he fears that his wounds will leave him unable to be of much use in a fight. In order to keep his newfound ally on the team, Optimus Primal reminds Dinobot of the legends of his predecessors, Grimlock and the Generation 1 Dinobots. Realizing the profound legacy that he’s a part of, Dinobot elects to stay — albeit while recovering from his wounds.
It’s unknown the extent of his damage, though it would certainly have to be a lot in order for Dinobot to consider simply retiring from combat completely. It remains to be seen if he’ll be much of a factor in the future of the Beast Wars, or if his fighting days are in fact as extinct as his alternate mode.
