Spider-Man’s Sinister War Could Set Up Doctor Strange’s Death

[ad_1]

Although Spider-Man’s Sinister War has just begun, Doctor Strange’s involvement in the event may lead to the mystical Avenger’s upcoming demise.

The “Sinister War” event pits many of Spider-Man’s most prominent foes against one another in a massive conflict that could risk all of their lives. At the center of it all is Kindred, a seemingly demonic force that’s been moving behind the scenes with hellish power at its fingertips, manipulating the villains into conflict with one another. Throughout Doctor Strange’s investigation into why the forces of hell are targeting Spider-Man, it’s been repeatedly hinted that Kindred has a connection to Mephisto — and that the deal between him and Spider-Man is finally coming back to bite Peter Parker and his loved ones.

If that’s the case, then there’s a chance that Spider-Man’s actions might have a major causality on the way. Is it possible that Kindred and Mephisto’s role in “The Sinister War” is a prelude to Mephisto being involved in the upcoming death of Doctor Strange?

The upcoming five-issue Death of Doctor Strange miniseries by Jed MacKay and Lee Garbett will explore the ramifications of what happens when the Sorceror Supreme is killed. Although the full circumstances of his fate remains a mystery for now, it’s unlikely that just anyone could have felled one of Marvel’s most powerful mystical forces. The cover art for Death of Doctor Strange #1 features tentacles surrounding a skull, hinting that it could perhaps be connected to Shuma-Gorath, one of Marvel’s greatest threats. Meanwhile, the cover art for Death of Doctor Strange #2 seems to show Baron Mordo lording over the hero’s corpse, hinting at his involvement.

But perhaps the greatest possible suspect is one of Marvel’s most nefarious magical foes: the devilish Mephisto. The devil of the Marvel Universe has been making serious power plays lately, helping create the world of Heroes Reborn and enacting an ancient and terrible conspiracy against all living beings in Avengers. He’s also been hinted to hold powerful sway over Spider-Man, most likely tied to the bargain the pair made in “One More Day” to save May Parker’s life. Doctor Strange has been investigating the matter, even confronting a grinning Mephisto directly about the issue.

Doctor Strange asks Mephisto about Peter Parker's soul.

Meanwhile, Kindred has finally begun to enact his plans and set up the massive Sinister War between all of Peter’s enemies. Doctor Strange has been looking further into this connection on Peter’s behalf, and it’s possible that this investigation leads him down an even more dangerous path than he realizes. It’s possible that Mephisto’s interest in Peter has always been about luring a bigger target such as Doctor Strange into his grasp, which would be completely in line with prior plans enacted by Marvel’s resident devil.

While there’s no concrete tie between the two events as of yet, the fact that Mephisto has become such a major figure in the events befalling Spider-Man, his friends, and his enemies — and that Doctor Strange has gotten himself involved in the chaos Peter Parker has brought onto himself — could result in a bit of the Parker Luck rubbing off on Doctor Strange and finally bringing him down. If so, then Spider-Man might end up with another death on his conscience, and Mephisto might be on his way to a major win over the heroes.
