There probably aren’t too many characters who are as hungry for a fight as Natsu. Even Goku knows when to calm down from time to time and not approach literally everyone he meets for a fight. But that’s not the case with the lead protagonist of Fairy Tail.
Natsu gets into it with everyone at one point or another, both as a necessity for the sake of the plot as well as because that’s simply who he is. And regardless of how the fight turns out, he always wants a rematch with whoever he’s fought before, willing to take them on to see how much they’ve both improved.
8 Rogue Tried His Best To Defeat Natsu During The Grand Magic Games But Was Overwhelmed
Rogue is far from the best rival Natsu’s ever had, as Rogue has always been far more focused on Gajeel than he has Natsu. That said, during the Grand Magic Games Natsu got in the way of Rogue’s chance to challenge Gajeel and fought both him and his partner. But even though Rogue had the back-up of his partner, it didn’t stop Natsu from defeating them both even though they were at full strength.
7 Loke Has To Deal With Natsu Constantly Asking Him To Spar Together
Loke was one of the mystery members of Fairy Tail, until everyone learned that he was actually Leo of the Celestial Spirits. The most powerful Celestial Spirit short of the Celestial Spirit King, Loke spent years trapped in the world of humans after he failed to save his master. Lucy’s compassion for Celestial Spirits saved him and allowed him to go back home, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a staunch member of Fairy Tail. And whenever he makes a re-appearance, Natsu is always eager to challenge him to a fight, wanting to know what he’s capable of now that he’s Leo again.
6 Erza Is Someone Natsu Would Love To Fight When He Can Get Over His Fear Of Her
While Erza is considered one of Natsu’s rivals, she might be the only one he’s terrified of. Known as the Queen of the Fairies, Erza is one of Fairy Tail’s most powerful guild members, and one of the few S-Ranked mages they have.
With her power, she’s far stronger than Natsu (unless the plot calls him to be stronger), but that’s never stopped Natsu from challenging others in the group. What stops Natsu is that Erza doesn’t tolerate any disrespect and has beaten up multiple members of the guild for getting out of line before.
5 Gildarts Is One Of The Few People Natsu Hasn’t Beaten
Gildarts is one of Fairy Tail’s strongest mages. His special ability Crush is so strong that Magnolia Town actually reconfigures itself to get out of the way of Gildarts so he doesn’t destroy anything. Nonetheless, that hasn’t stopped Natsu from challenging Gildarts to fights. Natsu fought him seriously during the Tenrou Island S-Class trials, but in the end, a glimpse of Gildarts’ magic was enough to force Natsu to quit rather than continue fighting. Natsu still hasn’t won a fight against Gildarts and is currently chasing a goal that Gildarts himself never reached, continuing their rivalry in the Fairy Tail sequel manga.
4 Laxus Is Another Rival Natsu Wishes To Catch Up To
Laxus is another character in Fairy Tail who Natsu wishes to match up to. But unlike Gildarts who’s way out of his league and Erza who he’s terrified to battle, Natsu challenges Laxus fairly frequently. He had to fight Laxus for real during the Battle of Fairy Tail, and a mix of plot power-ups and help from Gajeel is the only reason Natsu managed to survive. Despite Laxus’ loss there, they fought again later in a filler arc, and Natsu was defeated in a single punch. With Natsu limiting himself when he’s not serious, it’s hard to see him ever figuring out a way to surpass the Lightning Dragon Slayer.
3 Sting Fought Natsu In The Grand Magic Games With Rogue But Was Easily Defeated
Sting was one of the younger Dragon Slayers introduced in the time skip. The character had been chasing Natsu with the goal of proving he’d become powerful enough to defeat the man he once looked up to. This effectively made him one of Natsu’s rivals, even though Natsu didn’t acknowledge him at first.
But after having his magic potential unleashed, Sting and Rogue working together weren’t even close to being strong enough to defeat him. As Mavis Vermillion put it, “There are walls that power alone can’t break through.” Still, Sting strives to become Natsu’s equal as the leader of Sabertooth.
2 Gajeel Is Natsu’s Most Eager Challenger
Gajeel was introduced in the Phantom Lord arc of Fairy Tail and very quickly established himself as one of Natsu’s chief rivals. When he makes his first appearance, Natsu struggles against him because of Gajeel’s ability to replenish his magic from eating his much more plentiful element, resulting in Natsu barely getting a victory. Later in the series though, Gajeel finds it harder to keep up even as he becomes stronger himself. Still, Gajeel gains the victory of character development, as he actually grows up by the time of the sequel series.
1 Gray Is Natsu’s Oldest Rival & Someone Who Manages To Keep Up With Him In Strength
Gray is Natsu’s ultimate rival. The two of them have been fighting against one another for years, getting into it over literally everything. For a time, Natsu surpasses Gray as he continuously finds himself dealing with bigger and bigger challenges while Gray is left facing second and third-tier opponents. But Gray catches up during the Tartaros arc when he gains his dad’s power of Ice Devil Slayer, making him the only member of Fairy Tail able to stand beside Natsu during his battle against Mard Geer. He’s also one of the few members of Fairy Tail able to fight Natsu seriously during the last arc, even when he’s in E.N.D. form.
