Skuttlebutt’s Final Form Just Saved Marvel’s Alien Thor

Beta Ray Bill has finally come to the end of his interdimensional journey through space, and now he’s finally ready to off against Surtur himself.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Beta Ray Bill #5 from Marvel Comics, on sale now.

Beta Ray Bill has been on an unforgettable journey through the cosmos and dimensions beyond, all in the search for a new weapon capable of returning him to his humanoid form. Now his quest has come to its finale in the most dreadful realm of them all, and Bill is now poised to face off against the fiery Surtur. Of course, besting a god in combat is far from an easy task no matter what weapons Bill brings into the fight. Thankfully, his friends are there to help him even the odds, and Skuttlebutt’s latest transformation has done just that in a truly explosive fashion.

Beta Ray Bill has finally come within arms reach of Twilight, the mystic blade of Surtur which holds the same sort of key to returning to his humanoid form that his lost hammer Stormbreaker once did. Unfortunately, between Bill and his prize is Surtur himself. The demon who destroyed Bill’s world now aims to finish the job by taking the cosmic God of Thunder’s life as well. Try as he might to overcome his blazing opponent, Bill is on the ropes from almost the very start, with every groundbreaking punch only staving off the inevitable. As Skuttlebutt and Skurge look on from the sidelines, the sentient spacecraft gets a brilliant idea that might just save all of their lives, but she’s going to need Skurge’s help. Using the shockwaves emanating from the superpowered fistfight happening nearby as an energy source, Skuttlebutt undergoes her most jaw-dropping transformation yet without a moment to lose.

Skuttlebutt has been a spacecraft, humanoid and even a lava-faring battleship in her most recent journey with Bill. Now in the pages of Beta Ray Bill #5 by Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer and VC’s Joe Sabino, she has reshaped every ounce of her physical being into the most massive firearm that any of these heroes have ever seen. Standing well beneath the towering barrel that she has created, Skuttlebutt asks Skurge to take aim and pull the trigger, a task which the Executioner takes no small amount of pride in. With tears of gratitude in his eyes, Skurge sets his sights on Surtur’s lumbering frame, and with one deft shot, the Fire Demon’s torso is torn almost completely in half. It’s a stunning sight to behold, and one that gives Bill precisely the opening he needs to wrench Twilight free from its place set in stone before taking the blade to Surtur’s neck. There is no question that this was Skuttlebutt’s most amazing display of her powers so far, though it is also one that speaks to just how strong of an ally Bill’s ship has become.

Bringing Surtur down on his own, despite the pulse-pounding fight he put up, would have been ultimately futile for Beta Ray Bill, making Skuttlebutt’s assault on Surtur all the more impressive. Not only that, but it pushes the limits of just what the sentient ship can do with her newfound powers, and that’s assuming she even has a limit. Even if the axe she provided Bill with couldn’t return him to his preferred physical form, the range that Skuttlebutt herself has shown off speaks to just how much she can accomplish when the situation calls for it. If nothing else, at least she and Bill can rest easy knowing they’ll never have to worry about a lack of firepower ever again, no matter what the universe throws their way.
