Lois Lane is important in the lives of Superman and their son Jon Kent, but one of the character’s writers says that’s going to change for a while.
Lois Lane will likely always play an important role in the lives of Clark and Jon Kent, but one Superman writer teases her role is going to change, at least temporarily.
“Throughout the ‘Warworld Rising’ arc, we’re seeing a lot of Lois,” said Action Comics writer Philip Kennedy Johnson Saturday at Comic-Con@Home’s virtual Truth, Justice, and A Better DC Universe: A New Future for The Man of Steel panel. “And this arc that’s happening now with the Super-Family, as they learn more about who the Warworld refugees are, who this new Mongul is, what he’s trying to do — she’s very present. And we see Clark, Jon, Lois, Supergirl and Krypto — they’re all all part of the scene.”
Unlike the Super-Family, though, Lois doesn’t have any special powers, making Warworld likely a very dangerous place for her, Johnson concedes. “It is probably not much of a spoiler to reveal that Clark’s going to Warworld soon, and as such with the story we have coming up in Warworld it didn’t feel like Lois had as solid a place in that story as she would as a part of Jon’s story as he’s getting his footing as the Superman of Earth.”
Johnson and Mikel Janín’s Future State: Superman Worlds of War #1 revealed that Superman was destined to leave Earth for Warworld, where he’s seen fighting in Mongul’s gladiator arena — with Lois nowhere in sight. Jon, meanwhile, has remained on Earth.
“So for awhile she’s not going to be present once the ‘Warworld Rising’ arc is over and we get to Warworld proper,” Johnson said. “She’s not going to be with Clark in person for a bit but she does have a pretty huge role coming up there down the line that we can’t get into yet.”
While Superman is away on Warworld, the upcoming Superman: Son of Kal-El by Tom Taylor and John Timms promises to focus on the Earthbound Jon, where Lois in turn can focus solely on being a mom for awhile.
But Johnson clarified Lois wasn’t done with Clark. “She’s going to be very important in Action as well.”
Lois’ exploits in “Warworld Rising” continue in Johnson and Daniel Sampere’s Action Comics #1033, on sale July 27. Jon’s subsequent adventures begin in Taylor and Timms’ Superman: Son of Kal-El #1, on sale Aug. 3.
