And while there surely is nothing more satisfying than saving the world from apparent doom, if you were to gather a collection of the Avengers’ finest moments, you’d be surprised to find a fair amount of personal moments among them. Because though they are a team of larger-than-life superheroes, the Avengers will always be a family first.

10 The First Team-Up

Avengers Original Roster

“And there came a day when Earth’s mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat.” The original story of the Avengers banding together to take on Loki, the God of Mischief is well known. As the inaugural team-up of the team, it surely has to rank as one of the best moments in the team’s long history.

Since the Avengers’ first appearance in 1963, the team has become a cultural phenom. But despite the time that has passed and the many different stories, the origin of the team has always been cherished.

9 The Return Of The Wasp

Janet Van Dyne Avengers Secret Invasion

A common catchphrases amongst the Avengers is “Once an Avenger, Always an Avenger.” The team is known for its tight-knit sense of family, making it that much harder to lose a member in the heat of battle. The garden of Avengers mansion is filled with statues honoring fallen Avengers, and there was no Avenger that was missed more than Janet Van Dyne, the Wasp.

One of the founding members of the Avengers, the Wasp was a casualty of the Secret Invasion event. Janet was killed in battle, but years later was found to be alive, living in a pocket dimension. The mission to rescue her was led by the other founding Avengers, with the return of the First Lady of the Avengers a great moment for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

8 The Vision And The Scarlet Witch Get Married

There has always been a taboo surrounding superheroes getting married. Some comic writers have found it to be limiting to a character’s development, while many writers have chosen to retcon many happy marriages for shock value, much to fans’ dismay. One of the first couples to ignite this debate was the marriage of the Scarlet Witch and the Vision.

The union between the hex-casting mutant and the synthetic android has always been a strange pairing, but the love the two of them share has become a classic staple of the Avengers. Nevertheless, it goes down as one of the happiest moments in Avengers history, proving that some of the best moments in the team’s history have been away from the field of battle.

7 Finding Captain America

Captain America Frozen Avengers

The original Avengers roster of Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Ant-Man, and the Wasp was a formidable force, but as the team was starting to get acclimated, they all recognized that something was missing. The team needed one more piece of the puzzle, and that piece was then fished out of the Arctic ocean in the form of Captain America.

Frozen in ice for nearly seventy years after serving in World War II, the Avengers finally had their secret weapon. As a paragon of truth and virtue, Captain America is synonymous with the Avengers and has led the team for decades. As such an integral part of the team, his emergence out of the ocean has to stand as one of the best days in Avengers history.

6 The Return Of The New Avengers

The Scarlet Witch’s mental breakdown and the events of Avengers: Disassembled left a part of Marvel fans broken. The death of Avengers like Ant-Man, Vision, and Hawkeye, and the dismantling of the team stands as one of the darkest days in Avengers history.

If the breakup of the Avengers can be counted as one of the team’s darkest moments, then Brian Michael Bendis’ revival of the Avengers has to be one of its brightest moments. The New Avengers title reunited the team after a prison break at the Raft. Bendis’ new team would become a landmark roster in Avengers history, inducting heroes such as Luke Cage, Wolverine, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man, and The Sentry into the Avengers.

5 The End Of Norman Osborn’s Dark Reign

The Civil War and Secret Invasion events of the 2000s instilled a large amount of disunity amongst the Avengers. To make matters worse, most of these heroes were forced underground when Norman Osborn was appointed director of S.H.I.E.L.D,  replacing the Avengers with his own team of villains who were posing as famous heroes.

Osborn’s Dark Reign came to an end during the Siege of Asgard. The Siege storyline united Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against a common threat, publicly exposing Osborn for his wrongdoings, and marked the first time Marvel’s Big Three of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America had fought alongside each other since 2004.

4 The Repeal of the Superhuman Registration Act And The Heroic Age

The Superhuman Registration Act, or the SRA, was introduced in the Civil War event and divided the superhero community right down the middle. The conflict that would ensue would completely change the landscape of the Avengers for almost a decade.

After the Siege event of 2010, the Avengers entered what was referred to as “The Heroic Age”. Steve Rogers was made Director of S.H.I.E.L.D, and his first order of business was repealing the Superhuman Registration Act. Avengers Mansion was rebuilt, 3 different Avengers teams were operating, and the team was no longer divided by politics or the mistakes of the past decade.

3 Ending the Kree/Skrull War

The Kree-Skrull war was a pivotal moment in Avengers history. The arc took place in the 70s and placed the Avengers in the middle of a long-lasting war between two warrior races from different planets. In order to stop the war from arriving on Earth and save their fellow Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes joined forces with the Kree hero Captain Marvel and Avengers ally Rick Jones to put an end to the war.

The Kree-Skrull war has been hailed as one of the standout moments in Avengers history, as one of the biggest threats the team has triumphed over. It even set events in motion for the Skrull Invasion that would take place almost forty years later in the 2007 event Secret Invasion.

2 Building An Avengers World

During the Marvel NOW event of 2015, the Avengers decided to expand their team to one of their strongest rosters to date. Tony Stark enlisted the help of Captain America to build a larger-than-life Avengers roster capable of dealing with global and even cosmic threats.

The team gave membership to brand new members such as Cannonball, Smasher, and Shang-Chi, while enlisting the services of heavyweights like Hyperion, Starbrand, and Captain Universe. This “Avengers World” handled threats from an interplanetary war with the Apex species known as the Builders, to squaring off with Thanos.

1 Defeating The Mad Titan Thanos (The Infinity Gauntlet)

The Infinity Gauntlet was one of the biggest comic storylines of the 90s and was so influential in Avengers history that it was used as a starting-off point for the film adaptation. A huge event featuring the likes of The Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, and Adam Warlock, the Avengers were brought together to fight against the Mad Titan Thanos.

The first in a three-part Infinity Saga from the 90s, The Infinity Gauntlet was a critical success and features some of the most iconic quotes and artwork in Avengers lore, with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes earning one of their biggest victories and truly establishing themselves as the planet’s last line of defense against cosmic and world-ending threats.
