A former member of the Firefly crew is going to be the key to saving the rest of the group from a very dangerous situation in Brand New ‘Verse.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse #5, on sale now from BOOM! Studios.
Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse has been giving the cast of the classic franchise a chance to go on new adventures, teaming up against the Blue Sun Corporation as they make their way across the universe seeking the secrets of Earth-That-Was.
But now, with most of the major characters of the modern series captured by Blue Sun, it looks like it’ll be on a classic hero to save the day. Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse #5 by Josh Lee Gordon, Fabiana Mascolo and Lucia Di Giammarino leaves the fate of much of the Serenity crew past and present in the hands of Inara.
Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse has been slowly teasing out the eventual fates of the Serenity crew, twenty years after their last major adventure set about changes across the galaxy. Zoë and her daughter Emma have been traveling across the galaxy in the Serenity, while Simon and Kaylee found happiness on a quiet world. River resides in a mysterious asteroid base, watching over a young girl who she seems to love like a daughter. Mal Reynolds has disappeared while Jayne has yet to have his fate confirmed. Meanwhile, Inara is potentially the most successful of the original crew when it’s revealed she’s risen in the ranks of her guild of companions.
However, despite going their separate ways years ago, the classic crew of the Serenity has been forced to reunite due to a new mystery. Chasing after Rasalina De Meras, a survivor from the original Earth, the Blue Sun Corporation has ended up trying to find the Serenity Crew after they stole the young woman on a recommendation by Inara. While Emma, Rasalina and Lu Bao escape and find River, the rest of the crew is captured and held by the Blue Sun. Notably, this includes Zoë — who has been forced to confront her past via a machine that replays memories, including the torturous loss of her husband Wash and drifting apart from her longtime friend and captain, Mal. This leaves the captured heroes in a difficult situation.
There seems to be no way for the group to escape the Blue Sun on their own — which is why it’s a good thing that Inara has also shown up on the same Blue Sun shop where her former crewmates are being held. She’s just been assigned as the Companion for the commander of the Blue Sun group that’s captured Zoë, Salo, Kaylee, Simon and their children, and is shown quietly conversing with her while giving her a neck massage. The Commander seems unaware that Inara has such a deep connection with Zoë as she reveals to her plenty of intel on her current mission.
The issue ends with Inara stealing away the commander’s unique key card, giving Inara the potential access she needs to rescue her friends. Despite her lack of physical strength or combat experience, Inara might be the key to saving most of the Serenity crew from whatever dark fate Blue Sun has in store for them — but she may want to hurry, as it’s clear that the Commander has the means to break Zoë mentally.
