Former WWE Champion CM Punk signing a contract with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is reportedly a “done deal” at this stage.
A recent report from Fightful Select suggested that former WWE Champion CM Punk (real name Phil Brooks) was in talks to return to professional wrestling after seven years away from the ring — more specifically, for All Elite Wrestling (AEW). A new report now claims that the Second City Saint inking a contract with Tony Khan’s company is basically a “done deal.”
According to Ringside News, the negotiations between Punk and AEW are “very far along at this point.” An anonymous source explains that Punk’s arrangement to work for the promotion is “a done deal right now” and that the two parties are simply “waiting until they are in person to sign the contract.”
Ringside News explains that there is currently no information regarding when and where Punk will actually make his AEW debut. However, the outlet does speculate that AEW would want to have Punk on-hand for its upcoming All Out pay-per-view, which is set to take place on Sunday, Sept. 5 and will emanate from Punk’s hometown of Chicago. Nevertheless, Ringside News explains that unless Punk pulls out of the deal, his AEW employment should move forward as planned.
CM Punk began his wrestling career in 1999, rising to prominence on the independent scene thanks to his time performing for Ring of Honor (ROH) during the early-to-mid 2000s. After signing a contract with WWE, Punk debuted for the company’s Ohio Valley Wrestling developmental territory in 2005. He made his main roster debut as part of WWE’s rebooted version of ECW in 2006, before being drafted to WWE’s flagship show, Monday Night Raw, in 2008.
Including his time in OVW, Punk wrestled for WWE for nine years, performing on ECW, Raw and Friday Night SmackDown over the course of his career. He racked up numerous accolades along the way, including the ECW Championship, the WWE Intercontinental Championship, the World Tag Team Championship, the World Heavyweight Championship and the WWE Championship. He is also a two-time Money in the Bank winner, and holds the distinction of being the first wrestler to win two consecutive Money in the Bank ladder matches. He famously set the wrestling world on fire in 2011 with his now-iconic “Pipe Bomb” promo, resulting in an angle that led to a WWE Championship victory over John Cena.
Punk famously departed WWE (and left wrestling altogether) in 2014, citing, among other things, injuries, creative frustration and a misdiagnosed staph infection. Since then, Punk has embarked on a number of other ventures, including acting, writing for Marvel Comics and beginning a mixed martial arts career with UFC. After retiring from the octagon as well, he became an MMA commentator for Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC).
Despite having not stepped into the ring for an official match in seven years, however, Punk has maintained a relationship with the wrestling world, making masked run-in appearances at indie shows and even appearing on FS1’s WWE Backstage. He’s also set to appear on Heels, Starz’s upcoming pro wrestling-themed drama starring Arrow alum Stephen Amell.
