DC Studios is ready to showcase its first project to audiences this year: the animated series Creature Commandos. DC Universe head James Gunn arrived on stage with executive producer Dean Lorey alongside some of the cast, including Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Zoe Chao, Maria Bakalova, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, and Steve Agee. The Max Original Series was announced as the official start of the DCU, which Gunn is leading with Peter Safran.
Fans were treated with the first trailer from the upcoming series, showcasing each member of the team and the comedic and mature tone it’s going for. Gunn explained at the panel that the show is being treated as its own thing just like all the other projects connected with the DCU. Lorey added that the show would be very grounded and action-oriented with its own style that has an Eastern European aesthetic. Gunn also said that working on the show was the most enjoyable experience he’s had, adding that he had very specific people in mind when casting some of the characters.
Gunn talked about developing Creature Commandos early on before he was given the role to helm DC Studios. The CEO mentioned his love for monsters, including the classics that DC has adapted in the comics. He said he pitched the series right after working on Peacemaker, in hopes of creating an animated series based on the property. He wrote the series once he started his lead role with DC Studio.
Each of the cast members went into detail about their respective characters and their complicated histories. Tudyk started by saying that audiences would be seeing their origins like his character Doctor Phosphorous. The actor promises that it’ll be scary at first, but viewers will soon warm up to them and see that they are emotional despite being violent and messed up in the head. In terms of guest spots, Gunn revealed that people like Linda Cardellini and Michael Rooker would be providing voices to some of the characters. The big one is seeing Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller, who Gunn described as very grounded and incredible to work with on the series.
When it comes to classic monsters, Gunn said most of them like Frankenstein would rely heavily on its history. He mentioned that Mary Shelley’s version would be taken into account when developing Frankenstein and the Bride, played by David Harbour and Indira Varma. Harbour revealed that it’ll feel familiar but also original to the series. The Stranger Things star is excited for people to see the character and loves the storytelling he gets to show. Sean Gunn also touched a bit on tackling both GI Robot and Weasel, a character that had a lot of popularity since he debuted on The Suicide Squad.
Grillo, who voices Rick Flagg Sr., did tease that there would be adult content shown in Creature Commandos, like the depiction of romantic relationships. He said his character would embark on a steamy scene with Maria Bakalova’s Princess Illana Rostovic. Tudyk added that being an adult show, there would be adult things shown like sex. As far as how much of it will be shown, Gunn clarified that it’ll be enough that some got pulled back but not by much.
In terms of seeing these characters in live-action, Gunn stated that audiences will be seeing them in these two formats. The first would be Rick Flagg Sr making an appearance in the upcoming Superman and in the new season of Peacemaker. Gunn says that these characters are misfits as they’re not all perfect. He mentions this to be much darker than his other superhero projects he’s done, but hopeful that it will enlighten audiences as well.
Speaking of those projects, Gunn offered some updates before closing out the panel in regards to Superman, Supergirl, and Lanterns. Gunn revealed that production of the new Peacemaker is already underway, saying it’s going exceptionally well. With Superman, he told audiences that a trailer would be out fairly soon and hopes everyone will love David Corenswet’s performance as the Man of Steel. Gunn also spoke on Supergirl and how it was inspired by Tom King’s comic Woman of Tomorrow, saying how completely different it’ll be from a traditional superhero film. Finally, he talked about Lanterns, which has been in the headlines since casting was revealed with Aaron Pierre taking on the role of Jon Stewart. Gunn said he was someone he wanted to work with and admired his acting ability. He added that this series would be grounded and something that no one has seen yet.
