9 Games With AI Partners That Are Actually Useful

[ad_1]

One of the most annoying things in a game is when it straps the player with a follower that is annoying and absolute garbage. They make for a terrible time for everyone involved, especially when the player is going out of their way to constantly save them instead of progress with the story.

However, there are plenty of games with some fantastic followers that are worth keeping around. Some are actually beneficial to have around, giving tips, helping fight, or just generally being a source of joy. Finally, a reason to actually recruit an NPC instead of using them as bait for a difficult battle.

9 Spyro the Dragon Series: Sparx Is Both Protector & Loot Collector

Spyro And Sparx

Sparx doesn’t get enough love. Originally he wasn’t much, but this little guy ensures that the player can take a couple of hits before needing to reset. He collects loot, explains points of the lore, and will actively buzz around to save Spyro at every chance he gets.

Then if Spyro gets some bugs, he just eats them himself. No need for feeding him or taking care of him, he exists to take care of the player, giving a little boost and a few more shots.

8 The Last Of Us: Before Ellie Was A Protagonist She Was An Amazing Partner

Ellie and Joel from The Last of Us video game

Ellie is a fan favorite, and for good reason. She is actually useful, and will actually remain undetected when she is supposed to stay hidden. The entire story hinges around her, so it would have been really easy to make it feel more like a chore keeping her about.

Even though she’s just a little girl in the original Last of Us game, she is remarkable and quite capable of taking care of herself in almost every situation. No wonder she becomes the protagonist of the second installment.

7 Tales Series: Support Characters Have To Be Great When They Can Be Leads At Any Time

Anime Tales Of Symphonia The Animation Sylvarant Chapter Fight

One of the greatest things about the Tales series is that the player gets to pick whoever their face character is at most points in the game, making everyone else be backup. There is rarely a time when this turns out badly either, as all of the other characters are actively trying to assist.

They all make great support characters, as they can all be played as the face character themselves, so it really makes sense that all of the AIs are built to be of use.

6 NieR Automata: Whether Playing As 9S Or 2B, The Other Is A Top-Tier Ally

2B in Nier: Automata

Depending on the playthrough of NieR Automata, the player ends up with either 2B or 9S, and either way they are amazing followers who don’t ever do anything too utterly stupid. These two are great to have around, with excellent attacks and AIs that don’t get in the way, hilarious considering they keep their faces covered.

The best part is that the game extends its replayability by making it so the character can get the other one based on outside factors, which is absolutely fascinating in and of itself.

5 Bioshock Infinite: Elizabeth Will Fetch Items & Ammo As Well As Open Up Dimensional Rifts

elizabeth bioshock infinite

Elizabeth is a godsend throughout Bioshock Infinite. She follows the player around and helps them to unravel the weird time shenanigans happening throughout the story. And when it’s all said and done, she drowns the player to prevent further loose ends from cropping up.

The point is, the player is pretty much entirely forced to keep this brilliant character around throughout the story, so at least she is useful. She will even bring about items to help the player and tends to focus on what the player is lacking the most.

4 Fable Series: Your Dog Can Assist In Battle & Find Treasure

Fable Hero With Dog

The original installment of Fable did not have the dog, but the following two installments did. The dog cannot die outside of specific plot points but can assist in some minor battles as well as helping the player find hidden treasure.

The only annoying thing is that in Fable 2, the dog has to be the one to find the treasure boxes for the silver keys. Even if the player finds them first, they have to wait until the dog gets there. Other than that, what a good dog.

3 Skyrim: Marcurio Is Fairly Easy To Obtain & Can Follow The Player Almost Anywhere

Skyrim Marcurio Mod

As far as default followers go in Skyrim, there is the wizard Marcurio hiding out in the Bee and Barb, and will join the player for a scaled sum of cash. He’s chatty and has a strange obsession with the Dwemer, but he’s an actual powerhouse when it comes to fighting.

The bonus point of having Marcurio over some of the other fan favorites is that he can go just about anywhere that allows followers and doesn’t require going through an extensive faction quest to get him.

2 Fallout 4: Dogmeat Alerts The Player To Enemy Attacks & Can Find Many Useful Items

Dogmeat is such a fan favorite that Fallout 4 is known outside of its spheres as “the one with the cool dog, right?” Yeah, Dogmeat is the epitome of the best.

He warns the player of incoming attacks, cannot be killed, helps find items & enemies, and is generally just a joy to have around. The first moment he appeared, fans were worried about his inevitable fate. However, he will only be temporarily knocked out before coming back. No cliché murdering of the puppy for emotional effect here.

1 Kingdom Hearts III: Roxas Steps Up To Basically Beat The Final Boss All On His Own

KH3 Roxas

A good chunk of Kingdom Hearts 3 falls into searching for Roxas. Eventually, he joins up with the player and is instrumental in a massive late-game boss fight. So much so that the player can sit back and wait for the dual-weilding keyblade holder to decimate them instead.

The only thing that happens is that the player needs to land the final hit. Always a perk when an NPC can help curb the difficulty of an otherwise painful fight, giving the player’s thumbs a moment to rest. It’s a nice change of a pace for a serious that is infamous for how worthless Donald and Goofy are in battle and how frivolous they are with your item reserves.
