Following the aftermath of the climactic fight between Venom and Carnage in Sony’s 2021 Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and his alien companion take a much-needed vacation to a remote tropical island to escape Patrick Mulligan and the San Francisco authorities.
However, all is not as it seems, and the duo are suddenly teleported into an alternate reality. This reality is quickly revealed to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as J. Jonah Jameson outs Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as Peter Parker like he does at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. While fans eagerly await the highly anticipated match-up between Spidey and Venom, many are also wondering whether this means Venom will be staying in the MCU for good. While it is too early to know for sure, there are some reasons why Venom may be here to stay.
8 Carnage Is Dead In The Venomverse
Perhaps the most surprising turn of events in Let There Be Carnage is the unequivocal demise of Cletus Kasady and the Carnage symbiote. During the symbiote showdown at Grace Cathedral, Carnage and Venom find themselves separated from their hosts after Shriek emits a piercing scream that incapacitates the symbiotes atop the church’s steeple.
Using the situation to their advantage, Venom proceeds to eat the Carnage symbiote after he successfully rebonds with Brock before finishing off Kasady himself. Given that Carnage is the Lethal Protector’s greatest nemesis, it’s disappointing that the hype surrounding the villain is so short-lived. Or is it? Transporting Brock and Venom to the MCU reopens the possibility for a different Kasady—with a different Carnage—to take on the dynamic duo again.
7 The MCU Has Set Up The Multiverse
Sony’s Venomverse, officially entitled “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe,” began in 2018 with the debut of Venom’s first film. The MCU, on the other hand, was conceived ten years prior with the critical release of Iron Man back in 2008. Those ten years have been crucial to building the entertainment empire that is Marvel Studios today, thereby allowing them to pull off far more niche and wild concepts that other studios could only dream of achieving.
It’s apparent that Sony wants to build Venom’s world into a massive event like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and the best vehicle to do that would undoubtedly be the MCU. The MCU’s establishment of the multiverse lays the groundwork necessary for Sony to do an Endgame-like event of their own. The MCU could set up a storyline like Knull and the Planet of the Symbiotes, which would be inspired by Venom’s most prolific comic run to date.
6 Venom Can Be The MCU’s Lethal Protector
The ending of Let There Be Carnage puts Brock and Venom in a sticky situation within their home reality in San Francisco. Among those present at Kasady and Frances Barrison’s “Red Wedding” was Patrick Mulligan, a detective who was already suspicious of Brock due to his involvement in the Life Foundation incident several years prior.
Now that Mulligan can confirm Brock’s complicity with an alien species, all law enforcement across San Francisco and beyond have reason to capture the journalist and his symbiote companion to hold them responsible for the murders that Venom has committed. However, no one knows who Brock and Venom are in the MCU. At least, not yet. It’s the perfect opportunity for the duo to start over and allow Venom to fully embrace his role as the Lethal Protector.
5 There Are Rumors Eddie And Venom Will Split
Much of Let There Be Carnage‘s plot was focused on the relationship problems between Brock and Venom, with the former refusing to let the latter eat people for fear of “getting hauled off to Area 51.” Brock offers up a substitute in the form of two chickens—Sonny and Cher—which Venom rejects due to their brains not having enough nutritional value.
Their arguing eventually leads to the two temporarily splitting, leaving Brock feeling empty and Venom struggling to survive after failing to find a new host. The two make amends by the film’s end and work together to best Kasady and Carnage. Still, the question remains if the two will continue to make good moving forward as they face off against Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, especially since the MCU’s web-slinger has yet to bond with the symbiote.
4 Venom’s Other Hosts Are In The MCU
While both of Sony’s Venom films feature the titular symbiote bonding to several hosts, there are only two primary hosts it has historically been attached with appear in the Venomverse. The only comic book hosts in Sony’s films are Eddie Brock and Anne Weying, the latter of whom was often used to get back to Brock after being separated from him, despite being the original She-Venom in the comics.
However, the MCU simply has more opportunities for Venom to bond with new people, the most notable being Spider-Man. In the comics, Parker’s rival Flash Thompson became Agent Venom, Mac Gargan gave up his Scorpion suit for the symbiote, and various Guardians of the Galaxy took on the symbiote. Leaving Venom in the MCU, then, would allow him to make many of these unexpected crossovers that wouldn’t otherwise happen.
3 MCU Spider-Man Hasn’t Gotten The Symbiote Yet
Even if Venom doesn’t stay around in the MCU forever, he’ll need to stick around long enough for Spider-Man to at least bond with the symbiote and show off the iconic symbiote suit. It’s certainly not an opportunity Marvel Studios would pass up on, given the monetary potential of a new symbiote suit toy.
Furthermore, having Venom and Spider-Man face off without allowing the web-head to share the mind of the Lethal Protector would be an injustice to the character’s comic origin. Venom first debuted as Spider-Man in the symbiote suit in 1984 before making his first separate cameo appearance in 1988. Given the MCU’s rather slow pacing, Venom will likely find himself hanging out in the sprawling cinematic universe for a while.
2 Venom Still Needs To Adopt A Spider Symbol
One element that is still absent from Venom’s character design in Sony’s movies is his iconic spider symbol. However, fans of the comics know that the Lethal Protector doesn’t actually form the white spider symbol until after he faces off against Spider-Man. Given that Hardy’s Venom has yet to meet a version of the web-slinger, it makes sense that he hasn’t yet adopted the symbol.
The question of adopting the symbol isn’t an “if,” but a “when.” It may simply appear after Venom meets Spider-Man for the first time. Or, it could be after he’s bonded with Parker for an extended period and learned about the altruism that truly motivates the hero. Either way, fans are eager to see how Sony and Marvel will redesign the symbiote after he throws down with the wall-crawler.
1 Tom Holland Will Likely Be Back For Another Trilogy
Like many of Spider-Man’s most iconic villains, Venom eventually finds himself allied with his former enemy when he is unable to best the threat of his offspring Carnage. The alliance winds up leading the character down a road that turns him into an antihero of sorts who adopts the mantle of “Lethal Protector.”
Though Venom has already claimed this title in Sony’s continuity, fans would love to see him eventually team up with Spider-Man after the two characters duke it out. Given Amy Pascal’s revelation about Sony’s plans to resign Tom Holland for another Spider-Man trilogy following Spider-Man: No Way Home, it sounds like there will be plenty of time for the two characters to team up in the future.
