Politics, economics, and the inner mechanisms of governance. Ahh, doesn’t that just hit the right spot on your noggin? Top it off with a plucky protagonist with the worst luck since Subaru (except he fails with upward mobility, so can it really be called bad luck?) and you’ve got quite a comedy on your hands. Yep, we’re talking about this season’s The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt! With all the laughs and logic locked and loaded in, this anime has been quite the rollercoaster, from invasions galore to some serious policymaking (who knew how thrilling the semantics of governance could be ?).
However, all good things must come to an end and as the Winter Season draws to a close, we can imagine the sweet sorrow you guys must be feeling parting with all your favourite shows, not the least of which includes Wein and all his whining. But worry not! We at Honey’s Anime are dedicated to making sure that you aren’t left wanting for too long, so here we have our list of recommendations for this season’s best-wet blanket. Here are 6 anime you should try out if you liked The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt!

An innocuous office worker who ends up reincarnated as a slime monster (read: low man on the totem pole of magical monster) who, through a series of unpredictable and coincidental events, ends up as the ruler of the first organised form of monsters. Yep, Rimuru Tempest, through no fault of his own (actually, through every fault of his own if you think about it), has found himself the political leader of the first nation of monsters. While navigating the complex world of nation-building from the ground up (he literally built huts and houses), he finds himself dealing with the ever-increasing headaches of international trade, peace treaties, politics, and entrepreneurship! The Jura Tempest Federation needs a lot of work now that it’s its own sovereign nation and, much like in the case of Wein and the Natra Kingdom, war, alliances, and murky international relations are just part of the package. So if you want some quality world and nation-building (literally) come follow Rimuru and his nation of monsters! We guarantee it’ll be worth it!

2. Genjitsu Shugi Yuusha no Oukoku Saikenki (How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom)

Much like Wein, our isekai protagonist Kazuya Souma has zero interest in being King. Just like Wein, Kazuya Souma ends up in exactly that position due to the unfortunate circumstances of the previous ruler. Just like Wein, Kazuya Souma finds himself ruling a nation that’s not doing too hot at the moment, what with the expenses of war and threats of invasion from surrounding nations. And unfortunately, just like Wein, Kazuya Souma finds himself too well-suited to save his declining nation, regardless of his desire to not get involved. So if you really enjoy the sheer irony of a grudging and unwilling (sort of) protagonist brilliantly fixing the problems of his nation, much to his personal chagrin, give How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom a shot! Watching Kazuya, you’ll see shades of Wein, if Wein didn’t have the selfish desire to sell off his kingdom and instead wanted to see it flourish, that is. So if you want something almost identical but with an objectively better person as the MC, this is the perfect anime for you to check out next!

Who cares about watching someone build a nation when you can watch someone build civilisation? No. 3 on our list is Dr. Stone. When a mysterious light mysteriously envelops the planet and mysteriously petrifies all swallows and human beings for thousands of years who then mysteriously begin to de-petrify, it’s like the planet’s basically been rebooted. Gone are the vestiges of civilisation, the world has returned to nature! No tech, no gadgets, and no indoor plumbing. Gah, what a nightmare right? Well, Senku Ishigami agrees and our favourite science guy has decided to single-handedly return the world to its former glory: modernity. You read that right, he’s planning on rebuilding society, modernity, economy, and humanity, all with the power of science. Politics and economics, trade and commerce, war and huh, are no longer pressing concerns when there’s no toilet paper or electricity. So if you think watching man save a Nation is cool, we think you should check out man saving civilisation; we guarantee the same thrills but with way higher stakes and way cooler strategies because science makes everything better (just ask Senku). Plus, Senku is pretty funny, in his own grumpy cat way.

4. Choujin Koukousei-tachi wa Isekai demo Yoyuu de Ikinuku you desu!(CHOYOYU!: High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World!)

When seven students find themselves waking up in a new, unfamiliar world after their plane crashes, we can all pretty much see where it goes, as this is the classic start of any isekai anime. However, CHOYOU! has a twist, all seven students are prodigies, so it’s no surprise that they set up building and bettering the world around them! However, unlike most isekai MCs, our extraordinary entourage decides to put a cap on their abilities lest they ruin the world they’re in with their extraordinary ness. Sounds familiar? That’s right, Wein from Genius Prince is also a talented protagonist hellbent on underperforming to mask his capabilities, albeit for the far more selfish reason of enjoying an easy life. So, if super capable MCs who like to keep secrets are more your speed, especially while apparently building their societies and economies up, then check out CHOYOYU!

Negotiation and deals are something considerably less exciting than a battle royale, but considerably more effective in raising economic value. Wein and Shiroe are both intelligent and cunning leaders who are intent on raising the value of their respective nations and guild. And the key to this is negotiation and strategy. Watching Shiroe deal with the native NPCs of Log Horizon once trapped in the game is awfully similar to watching Wein dealing with the invading forces around Natra, and building a guild’s power and that of a nation are pretty similar if you think about it. Both need defences, both need financial security, both need the power to peacefully coexist with external entities, and to ensure all of the above, both need a sharp leader to light the way. So if you enjoy strategy and smarts, Log Horizon is the perfect follow-up to Genius Prince!

15 years of warfare is enough to get anyone down, so it’s no wonder our Hero found himself fed up and right at the Demon Queen’s (not-so) humble abode. Surprisingly, help comes in the form of the Queen herself. Sick of war too, she offers the Hero the deal of a lifetime: a scratch your back, you scratch mine scenario where both their countries benefit! So jump on this wild ride where these two form an unlikely alliance to give their respective countries an unlikely shot at peace and happiness through means other than war! If you’re more into political intrigue and some serious nation-building and not so much into the laughter and shenanigans, Maoyu is the perfect pick for you! All work and very little play make this a pretty serious anime but one that guarantees satisfaction!

Final Thoughts
And that’s a wrap on our 6 Anime like The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt! We definitely miss the thrills of watching Wein build his nation, not to mention the humour of watching him become more and more suited to the job against his will. But, as we said in the beginning, all good things must come to an end and while we’re sad to see this one go, we’re more than happy to console ourselves with any of the fabulous anime from our list!
