Yuji Itadori is the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen. He’s gone through some significant character evolution throughout season 1. Though he has stayed the same in many ways, the events of Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season forced Yuji to evolve into a stronger, less naïve person.
Yuji often draws praise for being a unique Shonen protagonist. Jujutsu Kaisen’s subject matter can be somewhat dark, and Yuji provides comedic relief. His evolution seems realistic. In amongst all of Yuji’s changes during season 1, some of his qualities have remained.
10 Hasn’t Changed: Yuji’s Philosophy On Life And Death
One of the first things fans learn about Yuji is that he understands the value of life. Therefore, he finds it important that people receive “proper deaths.” He remains consistent in his ideology that killing other humans is unethical.
He even expresses disgust for wanting to kill Mahito, a cursed spirit. There have been many incidents in season one that tested this philosophy. However, Yuji has remained unwavering in his respect for the value of human life and his beliefs.
9 Hasn’t Changed: Yuji He Had No Choice But To Kill People
Despite his philosophy on life and death, Yuji was put in a situation where he was forced to kill three people. At first, he believed they were cursed spirits because of how disfigured they were. He quickly realized that they were humans who had been disfigured beyond recognition by Mahito.
The three humans begged Yuji to kill them. They wanted Yuji to put them out of the misery that had been inflicted upon them by the cursed spirit. This mortified Yuji. It forever changed him, and he now had a clear objective to kill Mahito. He even promised he wouldn’t lose until that day arrives.
8 Hasn’t Changed: Yuji Is Still A Friendly Person
Many protagonists go through a series of traumatic events and become hardened towards the world. They witness so much bloodshed and endure so much trauma that they become gloomy, cold, and unwilling to form bonds with new people.
Despite everything that has happened to Yuji, he is still as friendly and outgoing as he was at the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen. This is one of the aspects of his character that sets him apart from other Shonen protagonists. Yuji’s demeanor has never changed despite being thrown into a new world of frequent life-and-death situations.
7 Has Changed: Yuji Isn’t Lonely Anymore
Yuji’s loneliness is paradoxical to his extroverted personality. It would be expected for such a friendly person to have a few friends around. As seen at the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen, he didn’t have many friends and was lonely at his old school. Upon entering Tokyo Jujutsu High, he’s made a lot of friends. He isn’t lonely anymore, and he seems genuinely happy to have found a group of people who accept him.
6 Hasn’t Changed: Yuji Has Never Lost His Conviction
Throughout Jujutsu Kaisen, several events would have made others falter in their convictions. However, Yuji’s convictions only grow as the events continue. After witnessing how Mahito mistreated Junpei (only to disfigure and kill him in the end), Yuji became even more steadfast in his goal of defeating Mahito.
In Yuji’s eyes, Junpei didn’t get the proper death he deserved. Junpei was killed off before his life could start improving. Junpei’s unfortunate demise further cemented Yuji’s belief in a proper death.
5 Has Changed: Yuji Has Become More Serious About Practicing Jujutsu Sorcery
Due to the events of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji has become more serious about practicing jujutsu sorcery. After his fights against Mahito’s transfigured humans and Mahito, Yuji’s personal ideals sparked his passion to learn jujutsu sorcery.
Yuji and Todo’s battle against the special grade cursed spirit, Hanami, also forced him to become stronger in his practice. He became more assertive in his techniques and in practice because of his desire to protect his friends and prove his strength.
4 Hasn’t Changed: Yuji Has Never Given Up
Yuji has never lost his hope or his willpower throughout the events of season one. He’s seen and experienced enough challenges that he should have lost his determination. However, Yuji has proven his immense willpower multiple times.
His willpower encouraged him to become much stronger as a jujutsu sorcerer. When Gojo had him sit down to watch movies while maintaining a constant flow of cursed energy, Yuji never gave up. Yuji is so steadfast in his philosophy about life and death because of this unwavering willpower.
3 Has Changed: Yuji Has Become A Much Better Sorcerer
During his time at Tokyo Jujutsu High, Yuji has proven that he is a quick and dedicated learner. Since the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season, he has learned many new jujutsu sorcery techniques. For example, under Nanami’s guidance, Yuji learned to track any residual cursed energy.
Under Gojo’s guidance, Yuji learned to use the Divergent Fist during close combat. Thanks to Todo, he also learned how to use the Black Flash, providing him a tremendous offensive advantage.
2 Hasn’t Changed: Yuji Is Still Determined To Fulfill The Promise He Made To His Grandfather
Many Shonen protagonists are willing to sacrifice themselves to save others, it is one of the most common Shonen hero archetypes. However, Yuji is not self-sacrificial just to fit such a stereotype. Instead, his spirit of self-sacrifice comes from a promise made to his grandfather before his death. Yuji’s grandfather made him promise to die surrounded by his loved ones and not to die alone as he did.
The underlying message of his grandfather’s wish implies that he wanted Yuji to help others and to be a good person. He didn’t want Yuji to become unkind and cruel to the world, and Yuji has never stopped fulfilling that promise.
1 Did Change: Yuji Is Not As Naïve Anymore
The events of Jujutsu Kaisen make it easy to forget that Yuji is a 15-year-old. Despite his cheerfulness and outgoing nature, the trauma he endures will change him in one way or another. Yuji was naïve to the reality in front of him at the beginning of the first season. However, this changed quickly.
Most notably, he was taken aback by the realization that curses are capable of being barbaric and cruel. They will exploit whoever they want, whenever they want. When Yuji was a first-hand witness to the way Mahito used and mistreated Junpei, he became aware of how spiteful and evil cursed spirits can be.
