Among the vast roster of superheroes that Marvel has at its considerable disposal, Spider-Man is undoubtedly the most iconic. First appearing in 1962, the web head has seen his fair share of contention over the years, namely between various publishers and studios wishing to capitalize on the web-slinger’s popularity.
Debuting on Hollywood’s silver screen in 2002, Spider-Man’s right are of great import to both Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios – with the latter indoctrinating the wall crawler into the MCU with 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. However, a brief fallout between the studios in 2019 left fans wondering whether Tom Holland’s Spider-Man should remain in the MCU or depart for Sony’s budding cinematic universe.
10 MCU: Already Has Established Allies
One of the perks of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is that he already has several films under his belt as he barrels into his third solo outing, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Given the connected nature of the MCU, Parker won’t be alone as he takes on multiple villains from his past lives, with the likes of Doctor Strange swooping in to help him.
Without the MCU, Holland’s Parker would have to build his network from the ground up, and perhaps turning to unlikely allies like Tom Hardy’s Venom. Fortunately, Peter doesn’t have to do that yet. Not only does MCU Spider-Man have an established support group with allies like Ned Leeds and Happy Hogan, he might gain new ones such as Matt Murdock.
9 Sony: World Doesn’t Know His Identity
Although Spider-Man would find himself in unfamiliar territory entering the Sony universe, it would make for an effective resolution to the sticky dilemma the devious Mysterio leaves him in at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Adapted from the 2007 comic run One More Day where Parker is forced to strike a terrible deal with the devil Mephisto, No Way Home seems to yield equally catastrophic consequences when Parker and Strange unleash the multiverse in their attempt to undo the fallout that has occurred from Spider-Man’s identity being revealed.
8 MCU: Would Preserve The Continuity
Given the intrinsically interconnected nature of MCU films, it comes as no surprise that by allowing Spider-Man to stay with Marvel Studios, the story maintains a much more consistent narrative. Not only has Parker built up something of a reputation as a nerd at Midtown High, he’s also become a full-fledged Avenger following Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Furthermore, Spider-Man has found himself becoming an increasingly integral part of the MCU’s multi-faceted narrative. His departure from the MCU would not only complicate future stories in and around New York, it would also require a great deal of retconning to write the iconic web head out of the story.
7 Sony: Access To Full Spider-Man Roster
Despite more than ten years of filmmaking and more than twenty-five feature films, the MCU has yet to explore the many characters involved with Spider-Man. Unfortunately, this is likely because Sony still retains the rights to all of these characters and intends to use many of them for upcoming spin-offs.
While characters like Morbius and Kraven the Hunter set to debut in their own solo films, it would seem that Sony is intent on building a superhero universe. Insomniac’s 2018 Spider-Man also reintroduced the likes of Silver Sable and Black Cat, who’d make for fascinating foils to Holland’s Spider-Man if he ever found himself in Sony’s cinematic universe.
6 MCU: Builds On Tony Stark’s Legacy
Since debuting in the MCU, Peter Parker embracing his superhero identity has been closely tied to Tony Stark. In fact, Iron Man is largely responsible for many of Parker’s early suit designs, including the Stark Suit and Iron Spider Armor. Far From Home finally sees Parker taking over the design reigns with the Upgraded Suit.
Furthermore, Holland’s second solo outing as the web-slinger seeks to address a cataclysmic event in the wake of Endgame: Tony Stark’s death. As Parker departs for a school trip to Europe, he finds himself conflicted between his desire to be a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and the increasing pressures to become Iron Man’s successor.
5 Sony: Could Adapt Kraven’s Last Hunt
With Aaron-Taylor Johnson set to debut as the imposing Sergei Kravinoff — better known as Kraven the Hunter — in Sony’s tentatively scheduled 2023 film, the possibility of adapting one of Spider-Man’s most famous comic stories is becoming more of a reality. If Spider-Man were to cross over into the Sony universe, adapting Kraven’s Last Hunt would be a no-brainer.
Written in 1987 by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck, Kraven’s Last Hunt sees the titular Kraven bury Spider-Man alive and take on the web-slinger’s mantle to prove himself the superior Spider-Man, which he believes he does by capturing Vermin. While it’s unlikely Sony will adapt this story exactly, fans would love to see Spider-Man and Kraven duke it out on the silver screen.
4 MCU: Crossovers Into Other Films
Another innate advantage to being a part of the MCU is the myriad of crossover opportunities that exist, with Civil War acting like an Avengers 2.5 and Thor putting together his own superhero team that included Hulk during Thor: Ragnarok. It’d be exciting to see the kinds of strange films Spider-Man would find himself in.
Given Doctor Strange’s upcoming appearance in No Way Home, it’d make sense for Spider-Man to at least cameo in the Sorcerer Supreme’s sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Spider-Man in a supernatural magic movie certainly isn’t something to commonly cross fans’ minds, but the MCU makes such strange crossovers possible.
3 Sony: Can Adapt Maximum Carnage
While it might admittedly be a challenge to see Maximum Carnage come to life on the silver screen with the ending of 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, it nevertheless remains a possibility in many fans’ minds. Published in 1993, Maximum Carnage sees the deranged Carnage escape prison and put together a team of dangerous supervillains.
Although audiences experienced elements of the storyline with Let There Be Carnage, what’s really exciting about Maximum Carnage is the uneasy alliance Spider-Man and Venom are forced to make to best the red symbiote. Obviously, the films aren’t close to seeing a team-up between these two, but fans can dream about the day finally this becomes a reality.
2 MCU: Could Be Next Avengers Leader
While Holland’s Parker finds himself struggling with what the mantle of Iron Man means to him during the events of Far From Home, the MCU seems to hint at the roles he could play on a future Avengers team. Despite Mysterio outing Parker’s identity at the film’s end, the revelation of who Parker really is could segue into an Avengers leadership role.
Granted, it seems the Avengers are no longer active in the wake of Endgame mbut Phase Four has indicated the possibility of the Young Avengers, with the likes of Wiccan and Speed showing up in WandaVision and Kate Bishop debuting in Hawkeye. Given Parker’s youthfulness, he’d make an excellent fit for the team of future superheroes.
1 Sony: Has Already Set Up Spider-Verse
Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse are two of the greatest superhero movies ever made. The latter in particular has gained traction in recent years and seems to have partly inspired No Way Home and the advent of Marvel’s multiverse.
However, given Into the Spider-Verse‘s success as a Sony property, it’s safe to say the studio is capable of crafting a Spider-verse which Holland’s Spider-Man can easily cross over into. Fans already expect cameos from the live-action Spider-Men during Into the Spider-Verse 2; it’d be really amazing if the animated characters could find their way to Sony’s live-action universe.
