Demon Slayer is a smash-hit shonen series that has all the makings of a great fantasy show. It has compelling and heartfelt characters, well-animated and exciting combat scenes, a well-defined combat system, and of course, an even mix of heartbreaking drama and laugh-out-loud comic relief.
All this keeps Demon Slayer well-balanced, including the high-voltage Mugen Train movie, and fans can easily recall their favorite comedy scenes and their favorite dramatic sequences alike. Demon Slayer excels at both, and Tanjiro’s journey has thus been a real emotional rollercoaster. He has endured heartbreak and grief, but also amusing scenes of slapstick nonsense with his good friends Inosuke Hashibira and Zenitsu Agatsuma. Which scenes were funniest, or the saddest?
10 CRY: When Tanjiro Found His Family Dead
This was the inciting incident of Demon Slayer, when the wicked Muzan Kibutsuji attacked the Kamado family and wiped them out, aside from Nezuko, whom he turned into a demon. Tanjiro had been away selling charcoal, and he took his time coming back home.
Tanjiro’s heart was shattered when he found the bloody remains of his loving family, and Nezuko’s survival was probably the only reason he still had any hope after this. He rushed to get her to a doctor, but he was in for a surprise.
9 LAUGH: When Tanjiro Met Hotaru Haganezuka
Early in the series, Tanjiro completed his training to become a true demon slayer, and he chose the ore that could become his Nichirin sword. It was forged off-screen, and then an eccentric fellow named Hotaru arrived at Saionji’s and Tanjiro’s house to deliver it.
Hotaru has an important job to do, but his goofy behavior, silly mask, and short temper made quite a scene, and even Tanjiro himself called Hotaru out on his strange behavior. It was a little bizarre watching Hotaru seize Tanjiro in that grappling move.
8 CRY: When Tanjiro Slew The Hand Demon
This fight scene made it clear that Demon Slayer was capable of making even the most gruesome and thuggish demons sympathetic, based on their backstories. At first, the Hand Demon was nothing more than a horrifying giant, and it had personally slain many of Saonji’s disciples, including the boy with the fox mask.
However, the Hand Demon had once been a perfectly ordinary human, and he had looked up to his big brother for guidance. As he crumbled to ashes, the weeping Hand Demon recalled his fond boyhood and longed to return to it. Even Tanjiro felt bad for him because, ultimately, he was simply yet another of Muzan’s victims.
7 LAUGH: When Inosuke Showed His True Face
The boar-headed Inosuke Hashibara was a wild card during the fight against Kyogai, and neither Tanjiro nor his new ally Zenitsu knew what to do about him. Inosuke was tough and confident, but once his boar helmet came off, his sole insecurity was shown.
Inosuke’s face was far less intimidating than his boar head, which wasn’t a bad thing in its own right, but Zenitsu was quick to tease him about it, and the scene was amusing rather than cruel. Inosuke had a lot of bluster to make up for it, at least, and soon had his boar helmet back on.
6 CRY: When Tanjiro Slew Kyogai, The Failed Author
Kyogai was once a member of the Twelve Demon Moons, but had since been demoted, and he was bitter about it. He was also bitter about his failed attempt at launching a career as an author. In fact, he kept the pages of his manuscript around, and that manuscript was precious to him.
Of course, Tanjiro wasn’t about to forgive Kyogai for his many crimes against humanity, but Tanjiro did avoid stepping on Kyogai’s pages, and it was heartbreaking to see Kyogai’s memories of his failed literary career. He just wanted to write something beautiful, and he was moved to tears by Tanjiro’s compassion as he died.
5 LAUGH: When Tanjiro Defended Nezuko’s Beauty From Yushiro’s Mocking Words
At one point, Tanjiro and Nezuko made their way to Tokyo, a stunning place of lights, trolleys, and crowds wearing Western-style clothes. More importantly, a doctor demon named Tamayo was working here, and she had an adoring assistant named Yushiro. Yushiro did not like the Kamados.
Yushiro criticized Nezuko for being an eyesore of a demon, so Tanjiro leaped to his little sister’s defense at once. Tanjiro fiercely proclaimed that Nezuko had been the village’s beauty, and becoming a demon did nothing to ruin her good looks.
4 CRY: When Tanjiro Slew The Mother Spider Demon
Tanjiro and the others ended up in a scary forest filled with spiders, and Rui, the boss, had recruited other demons to form a false demon family. The “mother” demon was a powerful puppetmaster, but she also endured abuse from Rui, her “son.” She did not have a happy lot in life.
Tanjiro was duty-bound to dispatch of the mother spider, but he took no pleasure in it, and the mother spider recalled fond memories of her humanity. Someone had looked kindly upon her, and she now wondered how that person was doing. She soon crumbled to dust, free at last.
3 LAUGH: When Hotaru Returned To Give Inosuke New Swords
Hotaru appeared again later in Demon Slayer‘s first season, and he was just as hyperactive as ever. Tanjiro, who was still recovering, was happy to see him, only for Hotaru to launch another tantrum. Hotaru swiped his knife at Tanjiro in an amusing fashion, annoyed that all the Nichirin swords kept getting broken.
Then Inosuke was given his new Nichirin swords but wasn’t yet satisfied with them. He pounded on them with a rock to create the desired jagged edges, and Hotaru went ballistic at the sight. Tanjiro had to restrain him.
2 CRY: When Rui Recalled His Humanity
Remarkably, most of Demon Slayer‘s saddest moments are based on not the heroes’ suffering, but that of the villains, even Rui. As a human boy, Rui had been incredibly frail and was cared for by both parents. Then, he accepted Muzan’s offer to become a demon and thus regain his health.
Rui was horrified when his parents tried to kill him, rejecting them as his real family. As Rui died at the hands of the demon slayers, he recalled his original family, and his desire to have a real mother and father to look after him. It was all he ever wanted.
1 LAUGH: When Shinobu Admonished Inosuke During Training
Shinobu Kocho, the insect Hashira, helped coach Tanjiro and his friends at the butterfly estate, but the training was rough. Tanjiro made some progress with advanced breathing techniques, and then it was Inosuke’s and Zenitsu’s turn.
Inosuke was struggling, and Shinobu cheerfully but viciously mocked him for it, complete with goofy visuals. Inosuke’s short temper exploded, and he huffed hot hog’s breath all over Shinobu to defy her and show his resolve. He must prove her mocking words wrong, or else.
