5 Superheroes Made For TV (& 5 Who Belong On The Big Screen)

[ad_1]

While the success of the MCU has created an entirely new base of superhero fans, many of the heroes that fans know and love from the movies have been around in the comics for decades. Even before the success of the MCU, superhero films and shows have been released like clockwork for as long as special effects have existed.

Superheroes have been successful in films, throughout shows and series, and of course, comic books and graphic novels. Despite some of the successful silver screen heroes, their stories might be better for TV; and vice versa. Regardless of current success stories for certain heroes, many of them were created with a specific purpose in mind.

10 Made For TV: The World’s Greatest Detective, Batman

It’s no secret that Batman has been one of the most successful movie superheroes for decades with many big-name actors playing the part including Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck. While the films have been a resounding success, for the most part, they don’t do much to highlight Batman’s best trait.

Batman is credited with being the world’s greatest detective. Providing him with a full season to explore one huge case would be incredible. Fans have seen Bruce take down bad guys, pick up beautiful women, even do things in the Batcave, but there isn’t a lot of screen time with him cracking cases. The investigation is usually summarized in a brief “A-ha” moment, but fans really want to see Wayne’s full process when entering detective mode.

9 Belongs On The Big Screen: The World’s Fastest Man, The Flash

The Flash feature

While Flash has had many years of success with the CW series, many fans tapped out after three or four seasons of the same regurgitated story with only slight changes being made. In season one, the villain was a speedster. In season two, the villain was a speedster. In season three, the villain was a speedster that was actually the hero from an alternate reality.

This type of plug-and-play methodology got very old for Flash fans. Comic fans got bored even faster given most Flash comic series are usually over in 10 issues or less. Considering Flash is the fastest being in the known universe, it seems silly and unnecessary to stretch his stories over 22 episodes versus 120 minutes.

8 Made For TV: The Incredible Hulk (& Bruce Banner)

Hulk standing in front of smoke.

Long before Hulk movies were made, there was a successful TV series starring Bill Bixby as Bruce Banner and Lou Ferrigno as Hulk. Bruce is known for his scientific brilliance and Hulk is known for his smashing. In the movies, the relationship between Bruce and Hulk has yet to be explored, especially as of late with the MCU.

A longer story exploring more of each distinct character would be rewarding and it could be very interesting to have entire episodes with just Hulk and others with just Bruce. Many MCU fans are incredibly displeased with the sudden “Professor” Hulk transformation and lazy explanation. Hopefully, his character can be more explored and developed in the upcoming She-Hulk series, without taking away too much screen time from his cousin, of course.

7 Belongs On The Big Screen: The Merc With A Mouth, Deadpool

Deadpool Alpha flight

Deadpool is known for many things, though a few of the more popular things would be killing, cursing, chimichangas, and breaking the fourth wall. So far he has done (or referenced) all of those things in two movies, and is likely to continue the trend in the third despite being under new management.

While fans love Deadpool, shows would be too much Deadpool. Movies are the perfect amount of that personality mixed with awesome actions sequences, hilarious jokes, and a bunch of quirky characters. Breaking the fourth wall a handful of times per movies works, a handful of times per episode would likely get old pretty quickly.

6 Made For TV: The Man Of Steel Himself, Superman

Superman is credited with being the very first superhero to be introduced (1938) and has maintained unparalleled popularity among fans for over 70 years. The man of steel is a moral boy scout, a witty tactician, and an all-out powerhouse when it comes to strength. Fans love to see him take down big bad, but he is such a complex character beneath the spandex.

While Smallville explored more of Clark’s youth from high school through college and ended with his ascent to becoming Superman, it lasted for 10 seasons spanning more than 200 episodes. In addition to animated series, there have also been other recent successful series about Superman and his relatives such as Supergirl, Superman & Lois, and Krypton.

5 Belongs On The Big Screen: Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Stephen Strange

Doctor Strange Shuma Gorath feature

Considering Strange is such a powerful magic user, making him take down weekly tasks seems like an utter waste of his time. The first Strange film in the MCU was an excellent origin story and provided enough information for fans to keep up with the pace and development.

With the highly anticipated Thor 4 right around the corner, Strange could end up with a saga of his own if he maintains his current success. Many fans believe that Cumberbatch was born to play this role much like RDJ was born to play Stark, so it’s likely Strange will be around in the movies for many years to come.

4 Made For TV: Frank Castle’s Street-Level Alias, The Punisher

Despite not having powers and not technically being a hero, Castle has had a die-hard fan following ever since being introduced in 1963 in The Amazing Spider-Man #129. The latest portrayal by Jon Bernthal has proven to fans that Frank needed a show rather than a movie.

With his street-level persona, he needs time to find leads and develop the story in a meaningful way. If the same stories were told in movie form, they would likely feel rushed and confusing as so much would need to be glossed over. Now that The Punisher has reverted back to Marvel, rumors of a Punisher show on Hulu have surfaced, getting fans’ hopes up for more of Castle’s adventures.

3 Belongs On The Big Screen: The King Of Atlantis, Aquaman

Aquaman king of the sea

While Aquaman is a powerful hero, a somewhat virtuous man, and a king to his people, his stories don’t need to be broken down into episodic adventures. Aquaman’s introduction into the DCEU was very well received, though many claim it was only so good because of what it was up against in its own franchise.

Regardless, Aquaman’s movie debut was a hit and the second one is highly anticipated. While Aquaman has appeared in many of the animated DC series, he isn’t always a central character as he has to compete for screen time with Bats and Supes. Movies allow Aquaman his time to shine at the bottom of the sea.

2 Made For TV: The Anti-Hero & God Of Mischief, Loki Of Asgard

New Loki Marvel Comics

The latest MCU series featuring the God of Mischief has been a resounding success for Marvel Studios, so successful in fact that it prompted a second season. Loki is a complex character with many relationships that could be explored in-depth in future episodes.

Additionally, with the concept of “Variants” introduced, it makes the character all the more interesting as there are many different Lokis across the many timelines. Regardless, Loki is a character that often gets into trouble resulting in wild adventures that sometimes need much more time to explore than a film can permit.

1 Belongs On The Big Screen: James “Logan” Howlett AKA The Wolverine

Wolverine Truant's Cove

Wolverine has been a fan-favorite character since his introduction in 1974’s The Incredible Hulk #181. Since then he has appeared in various series and movies, perhaps most notably was Hugh Jackman’s portrayal in every X-Men film from 2000 until 2017.

Unfortunately, fans didn’t get to see his true skills until his final film which earned an R-rating, not only for cursing but also for the utter carnage Wolverine leaves in his wake. After seeing an old man Logan rampage, fans are hoping Disney can allow more than one R-rated hero and are also hoping for Jackman to return to the role.
