The Hunter x Hunter universe is stacked with diverse and powerful Hunters. Due to the almost limitless interpretations of Nen, Hunters can develop creative and destructive abilities that make them formidable opponents. But some do not take advantage of Nen’s flexibility, applying short-sighted and simple abilities to complement their power.
Additionally, Nen is not everything to a Hunter. It helps to have an analytical mind, understanding your opponent’s ability and targeting its weaknesses. These factors often mean that some Hunters are overrated and others underrated. Sure, a character might be a freakishly strong, but with their strength taken away, they might be in big trouble.
10 Underrated: Kurapika Found The Best Way To Defeat The Phantom Troupe
Despite being in the infancy of his Hunter career, Kurapika can already boast of killing a member of the Phantom Troupe and capturing the notorious Chrollo Lucilfer. The show is constantly alluding to the vast potential of Gon and Killua, meaning Kurapika’s talents are often neglected. Almost immediately after learning Nen, the scarlet-eyed Hunter thought of the best way to defeat the villainous Phantom Troupe, demonstrating a supreme mastery of Nen and a brilliant pragmatic mind. He isn’t underrated by everyone, with the Zodiacs accepting him as one of their own.
9 Overrated: Hisoka Is Brilliant But Falls Short Of The Best
Labelling Hisoka as overrated isn’t the same as questioning his strength. The Killer Clown is undoubtedly one of the strongest Hunters in the series. Even amongst the Phantom Troupe, Hisoka is likely second only to Chrollo and can hang with almost anyone. Many argue that he can compete with the likes of Zeno and Chrollo, but while he could take them on, there’s no proof he could beat them. He was effortlessly defeated by Chrollo at Heavens Arena, and Zeno is at least on Chrollo’s level. Hisoka is an elite Hunter, but he isn’t the best.
8 Underrated: Morel’s Nen Ability Is Extremely Diverse
Morel was vital to the success of the Chimera Ant extermination mission. His smoke puppets successfully distracted the egregiously powerful Neferpitou, and he defeated Cheetu and Leol, two of the stronger Chimera Ants.
His mastery of his ability is equaled only by a select few, and his self-confidence and intelligence produce a well-rounded Hunter that no opponent would willingly take on. Occasionally, his confidence can morph into arrogance, leading him to underestimate his opponent. But after Gon scared the life out of him, Morel won’t make the same mistake again.
7 Overrated: Nobunaga Allowed Killua And Gon To Escape
Nobunaga is a member of the Phantom Troupe who specializes in close combat. His battle style is similar to that of a traditional samurai, and his speed and skill with a sword are exemplary. But despite his strength, Nobunaga was unable to stop Killua and Gon from escaping, and in comparison to someone like Zeno Zoldyck, his En is unimpressive. He’s also not the brightest, often outsmarted by characters like Killua and Kurapika. Nobunaga is by no means average, but he isn’t one of the strongest Hunters.
6 Underrated: Bisky’s Transformed Appearance Suppresses Her True Power
Bisky Krueger is one of the strongest Hunters to appear in Hunter x Hunter. Her refined skills and understanding of Nen made her a brilliant teacher to Killua and Gon. She performed admirably on Greed Island, demonstrating her strength and agility in the legendary dodgeball game. However, as fans later found out, Bisky’s young feminine appearance is actually not Bisky. When confronting one of Genthru’s henchmen, Bisky transforms into the monster she really is and casually annihilates her opponent. Although no further information is provided, it’s likely her true form could provide a test for the likes of Hisoka and Illumi.
5 Overrated: Uvogin Was Outclassed By An Inexperienced Kurapika
Uvogin was originally set up to be an absolute monster. His terrifying power was on show against the mafia-hired Shadow Beasts (who were a little overrated themselves), effortlessly defeating four nen-users in a variety of ways. His big-bang nen fist was, at the time, the most destructive display of power fans had witnessed. He even killed someone using sound, screaming so loud it destroyed the brain of his opponent. But his limitations were on full display against a blood-lusted Kurapika, who took away Uvogin’s strength and exposed his lack of diversity.
4 Underrated: Kite Was Unfortunate To Face Neferpitou
In his short time spent with Gon and Killua, Kite proved himself to be a capable Hunter. He killed tens of Chimera Ants with one swing of his scythe and toyed with other high-ranking Ants.
He proved to be a valuable teacher to Gon and Killua, trusting them to surpass their own limits when facing strong opponents. He barely broke a sweat before running into Neferpitou, whose strength dwarfed that of almost any Hunter. This fight happened off-screen so viewers never got to see Kite at full strength, but as a pupil of Ging, he was unquestionably powerful.
3 Overrated: Ging’s Power Is Still A Complete Mystery
Despite a limited understanding of Ging and his power, the man is considered a legend. Netero once claimed he was one of the top 5 Nen-users in the Hunter x Hunter universe, and his ability to remain a mystery even to Hunters is a testament to his skill. Ging is a double star hunter that could easily qualify as a triple star. Additionally, due to practically no information on Ging being available on the Hunter website, Kurapika theorized that his power and wealth exceeds that of a president. But Ging has never really been seen in action, so it’s hard to put his name alongside the likes of Zeno and Netero.
2 Underrated: Knov’s Power Was Let Down By His Mental Resilience
Knov’s mental breakdown was unexpected. He was, by all appearances, a classic anime trope, a calm and collected individual with an analytical mind and complex ability. And for the most part, he lived up to the stereotype. His ability, called Hide and Seek, allows him to create an artificial Nen dimension that can trap practically anything. There’s more to it than that, although the limitations are really only known to Knov.
However, upon seeing Shaiapouf’s En, Knov becomes terrified. It’s not death that scares him, but the fear of the torture he may be subjected to if caught. Because of this fear, Knov’s true capabilities are never explored.
1 Overrated: Adult Gon Is An Unachievable State
In terms of pure strength, Adult Gon is not overrated. He completely decimated Neferpitou, who was arguably the strongest member of the King’s Royal Guard and whose victims include the talented Kite. Upon seeing Gon’s transformation, Neferpitou believed his power was equal to Meruem’s. But Gon only achieved this form as a result of a powerful Nen condition that almost killed him. It does represent the peak of Gon’s potential, but it would take decades of endless training to achieve, and while he is committed, power isn’t all Gon cares about.
