The titular species and warrior class of The Witcher are known for them being soldiers created to fight and kill monsters, possessing attributes that no normal human can possess. Naturally, Geralt of Rivia, played by Henry Cavill in the Netflix series adaptation of The Witcher, has also seen his fair share of battles with monsters.
While he prefers to work alone, as it would normally allow him to fight at his best and at full capacity, there have still been occasions when he has needed help when fighting these monsters, whether it is in the form of a distraction or simply another capable fighter lending him a hand, with these being more frequent occurrences in the second season.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Season 2 of The Witcher, now available on Netflix.
10 Geralt Struggled Against The Bruxa Until Nivellen Provided A Distraction & The Perfect Opportunity For Geralt To Finish It Off
The second season of The Witcher was always going to delve into Ciri, her true powers, and her new relationship with Geralt. However, the first episode still manages to include an intense monster battle, throwing viewers straight back into the wonderful world of The Witcher as if they never left.
Not only is Geralt’s old friend Nivellen introduced, but he has a secret, with him harboring and being in love with a Bruxa named Vereena. A Bruxa has vampiric qualities and can transform between human and bat-like forms, which makes for some horrifying moments. Geralt is up against it during the fight before he eventually downs it, only for it to take Ciri as a hostage. Ciri’s distraction allows a heartbroken Nivellen to spear the Bruxa, which distracts it further, allowing Geralt to get the finishing blow.
9 The First Scene Of The Series Saw Geralt Fight A Kikimora By Himself
The first scene of the entire Netflix series of The Witcher immediately introduces its first monster, the Kikimora, being fought by Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia. The Kikimora is an insectoid beast that frequents swamps and marshlands, with this particular one being in the swamps near Blaviken.
Its many legs are initially a problem for Geralt, as he is overwhelmed and kept underwater, until he eventually perseveres, cuts its legs, and finally slays the monster.
8 When A Leshy Had Shockingly Infected Their Brother Eskel, Geralt & Vesemir Worked Together To Stop Its Rampage
When Geralt finally arrives at Kaer Morhen in the second season, the keep and Geralt’s fellow witchers get their highly anticipated introduction to the series. However, fan-favorite witcher Eskel is given a different role in the show, with him being infected and taken over by a Leshy, a tree-like forest monster.
Conflicted between slaying the monster and saving their brother, Geralt and Vesemir work together to contain the beast by hooking it and chaining it in one place. Unfortunately, with Eskel choking Vesemir to near death, Geralt is reluctantly forced to plunge a burning blade into the Leshy, killing Eskel. The Leshy can easily restrain an opponent in a 1-on-1 fight, but Geralt is able to defeat it thanks to Vesemir having its attention.
7 Geralt Had Slayed Yet Another Monster By Himself Just Before Borch Announced His Arrival
Not every one of Geralt’s monster-slaying quests are shown over the course of The Witcher series, but there are still those that have proof of him emerging victorious after fighting alone. First, there is the slaying of the Selkiemore, with Geralt being covered in its guts. In addition, there is the monster that Geralt slays at the beginning of “Rare Species,” just before Geralt and Jaskier are introduced to Borch.
While it isn’t directly referenced, the monster’s head vaguely resembles how the Basilisk is represented in the Witcher games, with a beak and sharp teeth.
6 The Horrifying Mutated Monstrosity That Split A Leshy In Half Was Distracted By Ciri, Allowing Geralt To Kill It
When Geralt and Ciri are attacked by the Leshy that infected Eskel, the two are immediately shocked when an additional monster arrives and splits the Leshy in two. The insectoid centipede-like monster, the show’s twist on a Myriapod, proceeds to fight Geralt as Ciri runs away. It even catches up to her yet doesn’t try to kill her before Geralt arrives to behead the distracted monster.
It isn’t a known species to Geralt, but it is later revealed that it is from another world. With it being a new mutation of horrifying proportions, this monster’s introduction raised the show’s stakes and brought some added mystery to the monsters.
5 Geralt Took Down A Selkiemore From The Inside
While this battle isn’t actually shown, Geralt faces off against a Selkiemore, with a civilian recounting the tale of Geralt dying to the beast, before Geralt enters the tavern in dramatic fashion, covered in Selkiemore guts.
The water-dwelling monster being shown would have been quite the spectacle, but the story and Geralt’s entrance were still entertaining. It is another step to Jaskier’s duty as a bard in making the witcher’s name known and revered all over.
4 Geralt Entrusted Ciri With Offering Herself As Bait, Allowing Him To Surprise & Kill The Chernobog
When a new mutation of Chernobog is released in the fifth episode of the second season, the following episode sees Geralt and Ciri try to take it down. It may cost him the life of his trusty horse Roach, but using Ciri as bait, who has to hold her nerve and stay still as the monster flies towards her. Geralt is able to launch a surprise attack and kill the creature in mid-air.
This is around the time that Geralt starts to realize Ciri’s potential and how she can be useful in these situations. He trusts her to stand her ground and help him do his job, even after their previously differing opinions.
3 Geralt Managed To Defy The Odds & Survive A Fight With A Striga Long Enough For The Curse To Be Lifted
A Striga is a human woman that is turned into a monster because of a curse. In the case of the Striga in the Netflix series, the Striga is Adda, the incestuous child of King Foltest and his sister. Adda drew a cruse from a jealous man named Ostrit, who loved the child’s mother.
Geralt’s fight with the Striga is one of the most brutal in the entire series and has some of the highest stakes. Geralt aims to stop the Striga from retreating and survive long enough for the curse to be lifted, rather than him simply killing it. Geralt is ultimately successful, other than the frightened girl lashing out and almost killing him in the immediate aftermath.
2 Geralt, Vesemir, Yennefer & The Other Witchers All Played Their Part In Saving Ciri From Voleth Meir
Not all of Geralt’s encounters with monsters end with him simply killing them; sometimes, it is about forcing them to retreat. The second season’s final episode sees the dramatic conclusion with Voleth Meir possessing Ciri and wreaking havoc at Kaer Morhen. She summons Basilisks to keep the other witchers busy, resulting in some gruesome deaths to the ever-dwindling numbers of witchers.
Through their persistent battling and sacrifice, they allow Vesemir and Geralt to try and work on freeing Ciri. In the end, it is a sacrifice from Yennefer that helps to release Ciri from Voleth Meir, and they are able to teleport her back to her world, freeing Kaer Morhen from her chaos for the time being.
1 Geralt Fought Off A Swarm Of Undead Beings By Himself, But Almost Died In The Process
In the first season’s final episode, after having to leave Cintra without Ciri, Geralt stumbles across a graveyard. There he has to save a kind-hearted merchant, who is trying to respect and honor the dead, from a swarm of undead creatures that bear a resemblance to both Ghouls and Nekkers in Witcher lore from the books and games.
After demanding that the man flee, Geralt is able to fight the monsters off, but not before receiving a deadly bite himself, causing him excruciating pain. Despite the pain, Geralt being taken to safety by the man he saved ultimately brought him closer to finding Ciri.
