While the Guardians of the Galaxy have gone through several roster lineups and different incarnations, they have remained a steadfast crew of heroes. Well, most of the time. On many occasions, some of their members have had to do things that weren’t exactly on the right side of the law.
For every honorable act this team has committed, it seems like they’ve committed a crime to balance it out. Things were a bit better in the days of Vance Astro and friends but Star-Lord’s crew can barely seem to control themselves long enough to not rob the people they’re supposed to be helping.
10 BIGGEST CRIMES: Star-Lord Used Mantis To Manipulate His Team
When Star-Lord started putting the modern Guardians of the Galaxy team together, he knew he needed the best of the best. Or at least the best of the willing. That included the likes of Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and even Adam Warlock. But there was one other teammate who played a key role.
Mantis is far more powerful and dangerous in the comics than she is in the MCU. Star-Lord used her significant mental abilities to manipulate the rest of the team into joining. The irony was the revelation about what he had done was responsible for breaking them apart.
9 HEROIC ACTS: Fighting Against The Plans Of Thanos
There are few threats in the universe as consistent as Thanos. Even when it seems like he’s helping the good guys for once, he usually just running his own con behind the scenes. The Mad Titan is always up to something.
While Thanos has no shortage of enemies, the Guardians of the Galaxy are always happy to get in his face. They have put a stop to a number of his most dangerous plans. Even though Thanos generally outpowers them, they never back down from challenging him.
8 BIGGEST CRIMES: Gamora Is A Universe Renowned Murderer
This isn’t so much about a specific incident as it is a career of incidents. Gamora was famously rescued by Thanos at a young age and raised by him. He made sure she was able to defend herself, a goal he accomplished through training and extensive body modifications.
Before she sided with Adam Warlock and eventually the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora was a feared killing machine. She still carries the burden of that well-earned reputation. Gamora isn’t called the Most Dangerous Woman in the Galaxy because she spends her days lounging on a beach.
7 HEROIC ACTS: Saving Spartax From J’Son
The second Guardians of the Galaxy film revealed Star-Lord’s biological father to be a celestial being known as Ego. In the comics, it was a much different story. Peter Quill’s father was the ruler of the planet Spartax, J’Son. This made Quill royalty of a kind.
Over time, Star-Lord realized that his father wasn’t a particularly good ruler. With the help of some of his teammates, he was able to end J’Son’s rule over Spartax and actually ended up succeeding him, even though he really didn’t want to.
6 BIGGEST CRIMES: Defending Earth Against The Orders Of The Council
When the Guardians of the Galaxy break intergalactic laws, it can be for the right reasons. At one point, J’Son informed Quill that a council of leaders of various worlds had declared Earth to be off-limits. This was due to the sheer number of superpowered beings and the chaos they tended to cause.
Star-Lord was worried that this would lead to an attack from various galactic villains. He was right as the Badoon almost immediately arrived. The Guardians stepped in and were branded as wanted criminals by the same council.

One of the biggest threats that the Marvel multiverse has ever faced was a series of Incursions. Essentially, alternate realities started smashing into one another, annihilating them from existence. The cure may have been worse than the illness in the end, though.
The result was the existence of one reality ruled by Doctor Doom. Eventually, the multiverse was restored, in large part thanks to the intervention of the Guardians of the Galaxy. They weren’t the only heroes involved in the effort but they still played a key role.

For many years, Star-Lord has been regarded as the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Well, most incarnations, at least. There have been more than a few versions of the team that have managed to operate perfectly fine without him even as a member.
The simple reality is that Star-Lord is one of the most problematic team leaders in all of Marvel, and is prone to making really bad decisions. One of them directly resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Kree settlers, the entire population of that world.
3 HEROIC ACTS: Defeating The Dark Olympians
Asgard isn’t the only world filled with gods in Marvel Comics. It’s also not the only one that’s disappeared. The Olympians have long been part of the fabric of Marvel Comics, particularly Hercules who has served as an Avenger on many occasions.
But like the Asgardians, the Olympians were gone for a time. And when they came back, they were predominantly evil. The Guardians of the Galaxy stepped up, taking the dark versions of these gods on and playing a large role in their defeat.
2 BIGGEST CRIMES: Quill Becomes A Terrible Emperor
As it turns out, being a terrible ruler of a world runs in the family. After removing J’Son from power on Spartax, a new leader was needed. The people overwhelmingly wanted Quill to take over, something he desperately didn’t want. But he was voted into office, anyway.
Quill took the job on and utterly failed at it. A big part of the problem was that he was always off trying to save the universe. Still, he did a bad enough job that he was removed from office. While being less nefarious than his father was a good thing, it was still a pretty low bar to get over.
1 HEROIC ACTS: Fighting The Phalanx
Manipulating the rest of the Guardians into joining the team using Mantis wasn’t cool. At the same time, Star-Lord viewed it as a necessary evil thanks to the attacks of the Phalanx. This technorganic nightmare threatened all biological life in the universe.
While there were a lot of players in the game, it was Peter Quill and the Guardians of the Galaxy who stood on the front lines. Their work was at the core of turning the tide against the Phalanx and ultimately winning the war.
