As strong fighters, the Kyoshi Warriors of Avatar: The Last Airbender are some incredibly fierce women, with the only male exception being Sokka. Named after Avatar Kyoshi, this warrior group was founded to learn how to protect themselves and Kyoshi Island.
During the Hundred Year War, the warriors primarily stayed on the island. But after Aang’s visit, he inspired them to go out and help others. That’s how they landed in the Earth Kingdom. Being a Kyoshi Warrior is respectable work, and training is no joke. With a fighting style focused on using their enemy’s force against themselves, they don’t have to be the strongest to win the fight.
10 HARSH REALITY: There Are Only A Few Kyoshi Warriors In Each Village
When Aang and his friends arrive at Kyoshi Island, there are only a few Kyoshi Warriors present. It is said that each village has its own group, so the warriors are scattered throughout the island.
Whether they are present on the island or not, Suki’s group consists of the only Kyoshi Warrior characters featured in Avatar: The Last Airbender. The realization of how small their group is compared to others is a bit hard, considering the foes they go up against.
9 PERK: They Are Trained To Take On Stronger Opponents
Physically, they may not be stronger than some of their opponents, but that doesn’t mean they’re weak. The Kyoshi Warriors work hard and train hard to be able to fight anyone they go up against.
To do so, they work to use their enemies’ strength against themselves. While they may not strike first, that doesn’t mean they’ll lose the fight in the end. It also helps that they train their minds in addition to their physical abilities.
8 HARSH REALITY: They Often Have To Fight Benders
Kyoshi Warriors don’t have any bending abilities, but that doesn’t mean they won’t fight against benders. Going up against skilled benders will put Kyoshi Warriors at a disadvantage right from the start.
Although the Kyoshi Warriors train hard to become fierce fighters, they won’t be able to win some of these tough battles.
7 PERK: Fellow Warriors Can Become Friends
As seen with Suki’s group, being part of the Kyoshi Warriors lets these women build incredibly strong bonds with one another. The Kyoshi Warriors’ purpose is to provide a way for the women on Kyoshi Island to protect themselves and grow stronger. From that, these women develop a form of companionship from their time spent together. Suki’s group is a great example of that.
6 HARSH REALITY: It Took Years Before They Got Involved In The War
For the majority of the Hundred Year War, The Kyoshi Warriors remained uninvolved. They stayed on their island and remained neutral in the war without helping either side. It wasn’t until Aang and Prince Zuko arrived at their island that they were forced to fight and defend their village. After this, Suki and her fellow Warriors finally went to help the Earth Kingdom.
5 PERK: They Use A Weapon That Perfectly Suits Their Fighting Style
At times, one’s weapon doesn’t always fit with the user and can cause complications when battling. The Kyoshi Warriors use the war fans not only as another nod toward Avatar Kyoshi but also because they work well with their fighting style.
Instead of forcing themselves to use a sword or dagger against their opponents (except when fighting Azula), they practice with the war fan until it feels like an extension of themselves. This allows the warriors to stay true to their fighting style.
4 HARSH REALITY: They Are Expected To Behave A Certain Way
As a Kyoshi Warrior, there are certain attributes that are expected from the warriors themselves. They should remain neutral, poised, and well-behaved, while their duty is to protect the villages.
Following in Avatar Kyoshi’s shadow, the warriors are taught to be a little more passive than the Avatar herself. When a Kyoshi Warrior acts out of character and becomes too aggressive or driven by emotion, they may be seen as less of a warrior and will not be taken as seriously.
3 PERK: They Are Respected Across All Nations
Respect comes with the Kyoshi name, and being a member of the Kyoshi Warriors is an honor. And with that honor, people understand how hard and important the warriors are to Kyoshi Island. As Suki takes her group of warriors out into the other nations to help, they only enhance their reputation. Though Azula recognizes this and uses it to her advantage, this still doesn’t impact the warriors’ reputation as much as one would think.
2 HARSH REALITY: They Have Connections To Troubling Organizations
Being created by Avatar Kyoshi means the warriors have ties to other aspects of her life, including the Dai Li. The corruption that followed was not her plan or intention, but it did happen.
And as the Avatar, it was thrown onto Kiyoshi’s name and legacy since she was the one who founded them. And because Avatar Kyoshi is also the founder of the Kyoshi Warriors, there is an unavoidable connection between the two groups. Their connection to the Dai Li might make some people hesitant to trust the Kyoshi Warriors, regardless of their status and intentions.
1 PERK: They Represent Women Empowerment
The Kyoshi Warriors are a strong force when it comes to women’s empowerment. The fans witness this as soon as Suki and Sokka meet. Sokka’s initial beliefs about women are quickly proven wrong when Suki beats him in a fight.
In Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Kyoshi Warriors are another step in showing that the female characters are just as strong as the men, if not stronger. The empowerment they bring to women is essential to the story.
