Tite Kubo’s hit manga series Bleach tells the story of Ichigo Kurosaki who gained the powers of a Soul Reaper one day and became a mighty isekai-style swordsman. He has visited exotic new worlds, met many new enemies and allies, and saved the world more than once.
Bleach is more than just action — the story also boasts a massive cast of exciting and memorable characters, and many of them had intriguing character arcs that totally changed those characters, usually for the better. Certain Bleach characters are totally different after the story’s end, while others are largely the same as they’ve ever been.
10 CHANGED THE MOST: Ichigo Kurosaki Has Come A Long Way
When the story of Bleach first started, Ichigo Kurosaki was just a punk high schooler who could see ghosts. His life was turned upside down when Rukia Kuchiki granted him the powers of a Soul Reaper, and he soon became Karakura Town’s #1 Hollow hunter.
Over the course of Bleach, Ichigo explored new worlds, gained new powers, and mastered his inner Hollow. He learned the truth about his mother’s death and his father’s true nature as a Soul Reaper, which all changed him greatly. Later, he retired from Hollow hunting and married his old friend Orihime.
9 CHANGED THE LEAST: Lieutenant Rangiku Masumoto Is Perfect The Way She Is
Rangiku Matsumoto is one of many Soul Reapers introduced in the Soul Society story arc, and unlike most other Soul Reapers, she wasn’t hostile to Ichigo’s isekai team. Instead, she followed Captain Toshiro Hitsugaya’s lead and helped him investigate the truth of Captain Aizen and Central 46.
Rangiku has always been a cheerful, confident, and playful person, and she sees no need to change that. Bleach fans love Rangiku for who she is, and by the story’s end, Rangiku is still the same — aside from a stylish new haircut.
8 CHANGED THE MOST: Grimmjow Jaegerjaques Became Ichigo’s Reluctant Ally
Grimmjow was the ferocious 6th Espada, a former Hollow who sought to become the apex predator of Hueco Mundo. Grimmjow joined Aizen as an Arrancar so he could gain even more power, but he only cared about his own ambitions, not Aizen’s — he was a total rogue.
Grimmjow is ferocious Bleach character but has a sense of honor, and although he was a sore loser when he finally lost to Ichigo, he got over it. Later, Grimmjow changed his outfit and his attitude, and he actually agreed to fight alongside Ichigo against the Sternritter — a big step for him. He finally learned to get along with others.
7 CHANGED THE LEAST: Captain Jushiro Ukitake Is A Longtime Veteran
Captain Jushiro Ukitake has commanded Squad 13 for centuries, and he is one of the Gotei 13’s most veteran Soul Reapers. Jushiro sometimes changed his hairstyle, but aside from that, he’s a stable character.
Ukitake didn’t do much in the Soul Society arc of Bleach, but he later helped Shunsui Kyoraku fight Coyote Starrk, the #1 Espada. Ukitake gave up his life to the god Mimihagi to help restore the Soul King, and his sacrifice was not in vain. He died a hero, and Rukia eventually replaced him as Captain.
6 CHANGED THE MOST: Rukia Kuchiki Has Been Through A Lot, Too
Since Season 1 of Bleach, Rukia Kuchiki has been one of Ichigo’s best friends and most loyal allies. Rukia isn’t just some sidekick standing in Ichigo’s shadow — she has a substantial character arc of her own, and she’s gone through some changes.
Growing up, Rukia was a street urchin and orphan in the Rukongai District. She was scouted by Miyako Shiba and became a Soul Reaper. She was also adopted into the Kuchiki family, experienced the world of the living firsthand, and even gained her own bankai.
5 CHANGED THE LEAST: Captain-General Yamamoto Has No Need To Change
Captain-General Yamamoto commands all Soul Reapers, and he’s been in charge for over 1,000 years. Yamamoto has certainly aged since his career started, and while he has since learned to restrain his formidable powers, he’s a Bleach character that hasn’t changed much.
Yamamoto is a tough but fair commander, and he is absolutely confident in all matters. Everyone is counting on him to lead them and save the day — and that’s what he did, until his final battle against King Yhwach himself. Yamamoto died a hero.
4 CHANGED THE MOST: Uryu Ishida Made Friends & Changed His Attitude
Bleach’s Uryu Ishida trained with his beloved grandfather Soken in the ways of the Quincy and took great pride in his tribe. When Soken died at the hands of the Soul Reapers, Uryu began to hate the Reapers. Then he met Ichigo Kurosaki and started a bitter rivalry — but they soon turned friendly.
Uryu didn’t mean to make friends with Ichigo at first, but he learned that not all Soul Reapers are bad. Uryu believes in the power of friendship, and that’s why he joined the Wandenreich to destroy it from within.
3 CHANGED THE LEAST: Tatsuki Arisawa Is Still Orihime’s Protective Friend
Tatsuki Arisawa is Orihime’s best friend, and she takes Orihime’s safety very seriously. She has been a tough but kind girl since her youth, when she and Ichigo attended the same karate classes.
Tatsuki later gained spiritual awareness, but aside from that, she’s the same friend Orihime has always known. Tatsuki sees no need to reinvent herself or go on an isekai adventure to the Soul Society.
2 CHANGED THE MOST: Shinji Hirako Changed More Than He’d Care To Admit
Bleach’s Shinji Hirako was the Captain of Squad 5 until one night when he and seven other officers were Hollowfied, changing their lives forever. They became exiled Visoreds, biding their time until they could get revenge on Aizen.
Shinji later helped Ichigo and the Soul Reapers take on Aizen, and after Aizen’s downfall, Shinji reclaimed his title as Squad 5’s Captain. He is now a more noble and heroic character.
1 CHANGED THE LEAST: Yammy Llargo Is Always Angry
Aside from revealing the true nature of his zanpakuto release and his Espada rank from 10 to 0, the brawny Yammy Llargo remained the same during his time in Bleach. He was a brash and aggressive Espada who held grudges against anyone who harmed him, including Ichigo, Kisuke and Yoruichi Shihoin.
Yammy never learned any vital lessons, changed his worldview, or even gained any new powers. When he died, he had the same attitude as ever.
