Characters in the world of anime come in all sorts. Many of them are larger than life and could only exist in works of fantasy or sci-fi, while plenty of other anime characters could conceivably exist in the real world and thrive there. These anime characters could find meaningful work, and even run for office in some cases.
Anime or not, a person needs many qualifications to run for public office, and not just a law degree. In theory, the best political candidates have qualities such as honesty, integrity, intelligence, empathy, a flexible mindset, charisma and more. Some anime characters could definitely run for office in the real world, while others are grossly unfit for office or wouldn’t even like it at all. Who should begin their political campaign?
10 GOOD POLITICIAN: Tenya Iida Has Leadership Talent (My Hero Academia)
Tenya Iida’s temper can run a bit hot at times, but he would otherwise make a fine politician someday, probably in a more modest capacity, such as a town mayor or as a member of an electoral body. Tenya already has some leadership experience in the U.A. school, and he clearly enjoys it.
Tenya is the class rep of Class 1-A, and he accepted the role with dignity and a great sense of responsibility. He gets carried away sometimes, but he always means well, and he is also a studious person who has a good eye for detail.
9 BAD POLITICIAN: Tohru Honda Would Get Overwhelmed (Fruits Basket)
On the plus side, Tohru Honda is a deeply empathetic person who is always attuned to the needs of others, and that is a vital quality for any political candidate on any level. She is also happy to make many friends and connections, and she easily remembers people’s names. But there are some problems.
Tohru is a decent student, but she probably doesn’t have the tough, multi-track mind necessary to function in public office. Tohru would get overwhelmed trying to juggle all this work, and she would probably struggle even as a student council president, let alone in an actual office.
8 GOOD POLITICIAN: Misaki Ayuzawa Is A Tireless Leader (Maid-Sama!)
Unlike Tohru Honda, Misaki Ayuzawa is a born leader, and she can easily juggle multiple responsibilities without cracking. Once in a while, she might get a bit overwhelmed, but she’s only human, and she has allies and friends to back her up. She knows how to make good friends, fortunately.
Misaki proved her worth as the student council president of Seika high school, and in her adulthood, she became a diplomat. It’s clear that Misaki has what it takes to run for public office, probably as mayor of a large town or small city. She’s tough but fair, and nothing slips past her.
7 BAD POLITICIAN: Avatar Korra Doesn’t Like Taking Action Through Other People (The Legend Of Korra)
Avatar Korra slowly learned to cooperate with politicians and the press to advance her agenda, but for the most part, Korra is uncomfortable with big-city politics, especially since she is more used to the rustic, pre-industrial world of the Southern Water Tribe.
Korra is the type to take action with her own two hands, and she doesn’t often ask other people to get the job done for her. Rather than be a politician, Korra would prefer to be a politician’s bodyguard, or form a militia to put down civic unrest.
6 GOOD POLITICIAN: Miyuki Shirogane Can Run Any Student Council (Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War)
Like Misaki, Miyuki Shirogane already knows what it’s like to be a responsible leader, being the president of Shuchi’in private academy’s student council. Miyuki pushes himself incredibly hard to be the student president and the school’s #1 student. He may have dark shadows under his eyes, but he gets results.
Miyuki may get flustered and unsure of himself when it comes to his budding romance with Kaguya Shinomiya, but otherwise, he is cool and confident, and can juggle all kinds of paperwork and make all kinds of connections across the school. He’d make a fine politician.
5 BAD POLITICIAN: Izumi Miyamura Isn’t Ready For The Responsibility (Horimiya)
Izumi Miyamura is a quiet and kind high school boy who is more outgoing and friendly than his punk exterior would suggest, but he is not cut out for even the student council, let alone public office. Izumi tries hard, but he gets average grades at best, and he has demonstrated no real leadership skills.
Instead, Izumi enjoys the quiet life at his family’s bakery and the Hori family, and he likes to hang out with friends, too. He’s not terribly ambitious, and seems to give little thought to the future. He wouldn’t even consider running for office.
4 GOOD POLITICIAN: Makarov Dreyar Is A Wise & Empathetic Leader (Fairy Tail)
Although Makarov Dreyar has plenty of political experience, he doesn’t always enjoy politics, especially where the Magic Council is concerned. Still, Makarov knows how to be a leader, and he has empathy, patience, wisdom, insight and intelligence on his side. No wonder everyone looks up to him.
In a different context, Makarov would make an effective politician, having both the brains and the heart to lead any organization or city and bring prosperity to all. He’s also the type to not go back on his word, and he could find all kinds of ways to reach out to different voter demographics.
3 BAD POLITICIAN: Hirotaka Nifuji Cares More About Games Than Societal Change (Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku)
While Hirotaka Nifuji is a highly competent office worker and a loyal friend, he would not make much of a politician. Political leaders do more than shuffle papers; they need to have a vision for the future and act tirelessly to bring about change and manage the lives of many other people.
Hirotaka simply can’t be bothered with all that. He’s far too apathetic about society to be a leader, and he sees work as a means of funding his closeted otaku lifestyle. He seems indifferent about the world at large, and has expressed few, if any, political views. He might not even have any.
2 GOOD POLITICIAN: Erina Nakiri Is Well-Connected & Well-Educated (Food Wars!)
Erina Nakiri was born into wealth and power, being a member of the powerful Nakiri family. Thus, Erina has always been surrounded by business partners and associates in the culinary world, and she is used to all this. It also helps that she’s very smart and has some leadership talents.
Erina is only insecure when it comes to her tyrannical father. Otherwise, she’s tough but fair, and knows how to handle troublemakers. She can also keep her cool during a crisis and rally her fellows to enact immediate change. She could definitely run for office.
1 BAD POLITICIAN: Yotsuba Nakano Would Rather Goof Off (The Quintessential Quintuplets)
Yotsuba Nakano is the second-youngest Nakano sister, and she is the most energetic and whimsical of the five. She gets rather poor grades like the rest, but at least she likes Futaro as her tutor and won’t complain too much if he asks her to study.
Still, Yotsuba is not the type to run for office. She is more interested in running track and other physical sports, and she has no clear leadership skills. She’s also not quite as socially adept as the other Nakanos, and she shows little interest in changing the world around her. Yotsuba sometimes helps others, but not as a leader or manager of any kind. She shouldn’t run for office.
