[ad_1]

Back in 2004, HBO set a new prospector’s gold standard for small screen cowboys. Deadwood is now regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time. Even with the evolution of TV in recent years, the Ian McShane starring series is still capable of duelling with the best of them.

A Yellowstone prequel from Taylor Sheridan is already earning comparisons to the cowboy classic, and rightfully so. 1883 has all the ingredients, and the talent in charge of them, to be one of the finest depictions of the American West to ever hit screens. Any fans that have been yearning for another Wild West wonder since Deadwood can thank 1883. Their wait appears to be over.

10 The Journey Across The Great Plains Is All Set To Be One Breathtaking Ride

1883 will give Yellowstone fans a glimpse into how the Dutton family came to own their titular ranch. These characters start their story out in Ft. Worth, Texas. There is evidently a long, treacherous road ahead of them to make it to the setting of Taylor Sheridan’s acclaimed modern western.

Anyone familiar with the history of the old west will be all too aware of the horrors that await the travelers in 1883. While the first episode offered glimpses of the dangers ahead, most fans are strapped in for one gruesome, distressing, but ultimately rewarding journey.

Taylor Sheridan rose to prominence as an actor during his time in Sons Of Anarchy. But it’s be Sheridan’s exceptional screenplay for Sicario that really gained him national attention. Since 2015, the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame member has penned multiple award-winning films including Hell Or High Water and Wind River. The latter of which he also directed.

Given Taylor’s experience in Tinseltown and the fact that he also created Yellowstone, it should come as little surprise that the writing is of such high quality in 1883.

8 1883 Features An All-Star Cast And Has Already Seen A Jaw-Dropping Cameo From An Acting Legend

With country music great Tim McGraw and western legend Sam Elliott headlining 1883, expectations were high from the get-go. Viewers may not have been ready for the tremendous quality of talent supporting the two leads.

Faith Hill, Billy Bob Thornton, and the incomparable Tom Hanks have all shown their acting talents in early episodes of the Paramount Plus series. This is already an A-List cast, rivalling the classic western shows that audiences have had the pleasure of viewing on the small screen.

7 Isabel May’s Performance Looks To Make Her A Star

While the verdict is still out on whether 1883 will actually catapult Isabel May to superstardom, it seems extremely likely given her performances so far. Isabel May not only hogs a fair amount of screen time, but she adds intimate, poetic narration from her character’s perspective to 1883.

1883 is all set to be Elsa Dutton’s story. The fact that the audience is likely to discover the horrors of the old west just as Elsa does will only make her journey all the more fascinating.

6 Even For Modern TV, The Production Values Are Awe-Inspiring

Screen legend Sam Elliott has stated that 1883 is the largest production he has ever been involved in. Elliott has over 50 years of experience in Hollywood, and his experience covers everything from Marvel movies to grandiose westerns to war epics.

1883’s first episode wowed audiences with its jaw-dropping set design and its incalculable number of extras. 1883 is set to have a scale that few shows can match. A recreation of the old west has rarely been so grand since HBO’s hard-hitting Deadwood set a new standard back in 2004.

5 The Eye-Watering Cinematography And Top Quality Direction

Any Yellowstone fans will be familiar with the breathtaking beauty of 1883. Taylor Sheridan has once again teamed up with the likes of Ben Richardson and Christina Alexandra Voros, who both added their cinematography and directing talents to Yellowstone. Each have worked on Hollywood productions in the past.

At a glance, 1883 already rivals any blockbuster western seen on the big screen just with its visuals. With such tremendous talent behind the camera, it’s difficult not to be excited to watch this epic old west saga unfold.

4 The Musical Score Has Been Sensational So Far

1883 will also utilize the musical talents of Brian Tyler and Breton Vivian of Yellowstone. Tyler sits as one of the top-grossing film composers of all time and won the 2014 IFMCA composer of the year award.

Many film fans are familiar with his work, some may not be aware of it. From 2013 to 2016, the music that brought goosebumps to every superhero fanatic as the Marvel logo hit the screen was created by Brian Tyler. Audiences can’t wait to hear more from both of these exceptionally talented composers.

3 The Gritty, Shocking Realism Will Please Die Hard Fans Of The Genre

Westerns can be light-hearted, wholesome fun. 1883 appears to be nothing of the sort. From the early moments of 1883′s first episode, viewers were treated with shocking amounts of bloodshed and murder. Those moments include a graphic image of scalping, and a rather wince-inducing look at the devastating effects of smallpox.

With the action set to ramp up as the journey does, 1883 is likely to dive far deeper into the lawless violence, macabre murder, and bloody betrayals that the wild west is so famous for.

2 If Yellowstone’s Track Record Is Anything To Go By, Western Fans Are In For An Amazing Series

With Taylor Sheridan as creator, and many of the crew from Yellowstone working on 1883, it’s easy to look at the original hit series and hold high expectations for this prequel.

In only a few episodes, 1883 has arguably exceeded those expectations. It even looks possible that it could surpass Yellowstone in fanfare and critical acclaim. Not only is the team behind 1883 incredibly talented, but they are also proven as a unit. This is one western series in safe, capable hands.

1 This May Just Be The Role That Sam Elliott Was Born To Play

Few screen stars in history have ever looked so at ease as Sam Elliott does underneath a cowboy hat. The western icon made his mark on Hollywood long ago. His appearances in the likes of Tombstone, Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, and Conagher have made him a true legend in the gunslinging genre.

For many, Sam Elliott in a lead role in a big-budget western series is worth the price of admission alone. Elliott’s performance in 1883 so far has been nothing short of sensational. This may just be the role that the mustachioed movie man was born to play.
