15 Years Later: Michael B. Jordan Joins Will Smith for ‘I Am Legend’ Sequel
From the category of movies-that-don’t need-a-sequel, Warner Bros is moving forward with a sequel to I Am Legend with Will Smith returning and the addition of Michael B. Jordan to the cast. Both actors will star and produce with Akiva Goldsman returning to handle the script.
The 2007 film adapted the classic Richard Matheson 1954 novel of the same name that had been adapted twice prior with The Last Man on Earth (1964) starring Vincent Price and The Omega Man (1971) starring Charlton Heston. The Will Smith led film had a strong opening weekend, bringing in $77.2 million and going on to gross $585.4 million worldwide.
According to Deadline who first reported the story, no director is attached as of yet. The original I Am Legend was directed by Francis Lawrence. While the ending of the film made it appear that Smith’s character of Neville had died when he used a grenade to take out himself and a group of mutants, there was an alternative ending preferred by Lawrence that shows Neville surviving and leaving New York to continue developing a cure.
We’ll have to see how the studio handles the situation when the film gets released.
