The Great Galactic War was a grand conflict between the returning Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic during 3681 and 3653 BBY in Star Wars. The battle lasted 28 years, with both sides taking massive losses in a conflict that seemed never-ending. Surprisingly, it didn’t end with a triumphant victory for the Republic.
Instead, the Jedi were forced to make a strategic retreat, leaving half the galaxy under the rule of the Sith Empire. While it ended the war, it didn’t end the conflict, much of that story spilling out in the Star Wars MMO. Only Palpatine’s Empire can match the terrible things that happen during the war.
10 The Sacking Of Korriban Was An Execution More Than A Battle
The first conflict of the war happened suddenly and without much resistance from the Republic. Korriban was lightly guarded by the Republic, only a few Jedi and Republic troopers. That was a mistake they would grow to regret as the Sith returned to reclaim their homeland, annihilating the Republic stationed there.
The Republic didn’t even know they’d lost the planet due to the battle being more of an execution.
9 Sluis Van Shipyards Were Destroyed & Most Of The Populace Killed By The Sith Empire
The Sith Empire didn’t believe in taking prisoners, and the destruction of the Sluis Van Shipyards was proof of that. All Republic personnel were hunted down and executed without remorse.
The peaceful souls on the planet were left with one choice, either swear complete servitude to the Empire or die. While this became the norm across the galaxy, Sluis Van was the first and most notable, showing why the Republic needed to stop the Empire.
8 The Counter Attack Of Korriban Was A Disaster For The Republic
Thanks to information leaked by Exal Kressh, the Republic was made aware of Imperial ship movement. It gave them the belief that they could strike at a base of the Empire’s operations, moving to take back Korriban.
Little did they know, Kressh only desired for conflict to provide cover for her movements. As such, the Republic’s attempt was a disaster, leading to the capture and death of a great many soldiers and Jedi alike.
7 The Battle For Balmorra Was The Longest Conflict In The Entire War
Balmorra was a planet known for its droid and military capabilities. It made it a prime target for the Empire to bring under their umbrella of rule. Little did they know how difficult the subjugation of the planet would be. Balmorra’s people joined forces into a resistance and with some aid from the Republic and dug their heels in the dirt to defend their planet.
The result was a battle that lasted into the Cold War, going on for longer than the Great Galactic War itself, and resulted in the deaths of millions.
6 Bothawui Was A Battle Where Both Sides Lost In The End
For much of the war, the Sith had dominated. While the Republic may have killed Sith forces, they hadn’t achieved victory as they did at Bothawui. It was such a resounding one that the Emperor sent 50,000 troops to take the world from Republic occupation. Even they weren’t enough.
The Empire was forced to exhaust a massive degree of their men to do nothing more than creating a draw with Jedi Master Allusis and his forces. It was a battle where no one truly won, and everyone lost.
5 The Dread Masters Introduced A Form Of Mental Warfare That The Republic Couldn’t Contend With
The Dread Masters were a force deeply tied to Sith Emperor Vitiate. They had mastered the use of Battle Meditation, allowing them to project terror onto Republic ships, forcing them to flee or take their own lives to escape what they’d seen.
It allowed the Sith to destroy entire fleets without having to risk any of their troops. They were so powerful that when they sought to rule the galaxy themselves, the Empire and Republic both had to send strike teams to take them down.
4 The Empire Manufactured Mandalore The Lesser To Help Unite The Scattered Clans
The Empire wasn’t above the use of manipulation and employed it often through their imperial operatives. One of their worst deeds was how they managed to manipulate the Mandalorians, getting them to aid them against the Republic in the war.
They found a strong warrior on Genosis and began helping him in his rise to power. This meant poisoning his opponents and spreading rumors that he was the new Mandalore. Their plan proved a success, but it spat in the face of the Mandalorian culture.
3 The War Pushed Both Sides To Start Creating Superweapons To Combat One Another
Whenever a war lasts as long as the Great Galactic War does, both sides are bound to go to extreme lengths to defeat the other. None of them were quite on par with the Death Star, but it doesn’t mean the creations were any less horrible. Hammer Station was created by the Republic and could launch asteroids at planets, bombarding them until destruction.
The Silencer was an Empire creation that allowed them to eviscerate the Republic fleet. They are two examples of the horrible things both sides were willing to do to one another.
2 The Mandalorian Blockade Nearly Caused Trillions To Starve To Death & Nearly Won The War For The Empire
The manipulations of the Mandalorians very nearly won the Empire the war when the Mandalorians set up a blockade along the Republic’s main trade route, stopping any supplies getting to the trillions of people under the Republic rule.
The Jedi and Republic both tried and failed to break the blockade, resulting in riots on Coruscant and their near surrender to the Sith. Thankfully an upstart smuggler known as Hylo Visz managed to break the blockade, stopping this from being the worst act in the whole war.
1 The Sacking Of Coruscant Was The Ultimate Deception & Ended The War
While the Mandalorian Blockade could have had awful consequences, the sacking of Coruscant actually did. Under the guise of a peace treaty, the Sith managed to launch an attack on the home of the Republic’s government, sacking the entire planet.
They killed the entire senate and destroyed the Jedi Temple on the planet. It gave the Sith a resounding victory in the war. With Coruscant held hostage, the Republic could do nothing more than accept the Sith’s terms.
