However, not all couples are happy and harmonious. There are plenty of romances that just don’t work, with characters bickering from the start.

It’s relationships like these that have fans wondering, how are they still together? There is no shortage of bad romances in anime, from couples with bad chemistry to rushed relationships that fail immediately. Some manage to overcome their differences and find happiness, but the road to love comes with nothing but heartache for many others.

10 Usagi And Mamoru Start Out Hating Each Other (Sailor Moon)

Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba are one of the most iconic couples of anime. The ill-fated pair is recognized even by those who have never watched Sailor Moon. While they are a favorite among fans, their relationship isn’t always as fairytale-like as it seems.

When they first meet, they can’t stand each other. They constantly fight during the first arc, especially in the ’90s adaptation, which is probably the most problematic portrayal of their relationship throughout the franchise. It isn’t until they discover their identities and past lives that they finally start having a loving and sweet relationship. While they aren’t the worst offenders, they often seem more like enemies than lovers.

9  Amu And Ikuto Are Toxic Despite Their Popularity (Shugo Chara)

The relationship between Shugo Chara!’s protagonist Amu Hinamori and Ikuto Tsukiyomi is problematic for a number of reasons, the most obvious being their wide age gap. Aside from the borderline creepy romance implied between them, the two don’t get along for most of the series.

Fighting on opposite sides, Amu and Ikuto are enemies from the start. When they aren’t in battle, Ikuto persistently bullies the 11-year-old, making her feel uncomfortable and angry almost the entire time they’re on screen together. They were the most-popular couple during the series peak. However, looking back, many fans think twice about supporting such a toxic pair.

8 Inuyasha And Kagome Bicker Throughout The Entire Series (Inuyasha)

Inuyasha in trouble with Kagome

From the time they first meet, Inuyasha and Kagome never seem to get along. It is a wonder how the two even came to develop feelings for each other, considering how much time they spend fighting throughout the series. Whether it’s a petty disagreement with the two acting like children or a squabble fueled by jealousy, Inuyasha and Kagome always have a reason to get angry at each other.

Even after they fall in love, the fighting still goes on, leaving fans to wonder if they’ll ever become a healthy couple. Their constant bickering gives fans little reason to support their relationship.

7 Kyon Can Hardly Stand Haruhi Most Of The Time (The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Throughout the series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, poor Kyon just wants to live a normal life. Unfortunately for him, he is the object of Haruhi Suzumiya’s affection, forcing him to tend to her every whim or risk the end of the world as he knows it. Their eventual relationship is obvious from the start.

Despite that, Kyon seems to be more irritated by Haruhi than anything, simply putting up with her antics because he has no choice. Even when their feelings appear mutual, it’s hard to root for the couple. Given the nature of the series, it’s hard to tell if Kyon’s feelings are genuine or if he’s just accepting this involuntary relationship.

6 Ash And Misty Don’t Get Along From The Start (Pokémon)

Ash and Misty get off on the wrong foot immediately when Ash steals her bike in the first episode of Pokémon, and it all goes downhill from there. Though Misty remains a faithful companion throughout her stay in the series, the two bicker from start to finish. Most of the time, it’s just a few playful jabs here and there. But other times, their fighting amps up, sometimes even leading to Misty physically harming Ash.

Misty hasn’t been a part of Ash’s main crew for a long while now, but many fans still love this couple to this day. Despite being such a popular ship, there are plenty of reasons Ash and Misty would never work as a couple.

5 Shuichi And Eiri’s Relationship Causes More Harm Than Good (Gravitation)

Fans know they are in for a rough ride when a couple’s first encounter is a fight, and that is just what happens in Gravitation when Eiri Yuki gives a merciless critique of Shuichi Shindo’s new song lyrics. From that point on, the two start an on-again-off-again relationship that involves more fighting than romance.

Despite being the one to initiate things, Eiri constantly rejects Shuichi’s advances. He insults him, ignores him, and does anything to get rid of him. The audience watches in confusion as the two go from a perfect couple in one scene to a toxic disaster in the next. Though they manage to work through their problems, everything it takes to get to that point leaves fans wondering if it was worth all the trouble.

4 Mai and Zuko’s Short-Lived Relationship Is Made Up Of Nothing But Fighting (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Many were surprised when Zuko began a relationship with Mai at the start of Book 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, especially since they had little interaction up to that point. While it’s true that Mai had a very apparent crush on him, nothing ever indicated that Zuko felt the same way.

Almost immediately, the relationship is in shambles, the two arguing about every little thing. After Zuko makes the decision to join Aang and the others, their breakup is no surprise. What is surprising is their reunion at the series finale, with a rushed reconciliation leading them to try again at love.

3 Keitaro And Naru Have Horrible Chemistry (Love Hina)

Naru throwing a punch

It’s hard to recall a time in Love Hina where Keitaro Urashima and Naru Narusegawa aren’t fighting. There is hardly anything pleasant about this couple, from Keitaro’s pervy tendencies to Naru’s physical abuse. While they’ve been friends since childhood, there is little chemistry between them.

The only thing they seem to have in common is their awful personalities. Throughout most of the series, Keitaro finds himself in awkward situations with Naru, leading to her wrath and a punch in the face. Their relationship is impossible to root for and hard to sit through.

2 Yamcha And Bulma’s Constant Fighting Leads To Disaster (Dragon Ball)

Anime Dragon Ball Z Bulma Angry At Yamcha

When Yamcha and Bulma first meet in the Dragon Ball franchise, they seem like a match made in heaven. Paradise doesn’t last long for them, however. Yamcha slowly starts to ignore Bulma, caring more about his training than their relationship. With each screw-up, Bulma becomes angrier and angrier, blaming Yamcha for everything and continuously lashing out at him.

Meanwhile, Yamcha is unfaithful, having many affairs while ignoring the growing list of problems between him and Bulma. Their relationship is painful to watch, and fans can all agree that it is for the best when Bulma leaves him for Vegeta.

1 There Is Nothing Healthy About Akito And Shigure’s Relationship (Fruits Basket)

Akito takes Shigure's face in her hands

The Sohma family of Fruits Basket is well-known for its problematic and toxic relationships. Though every connection Akito has throughout the series is unhealthy, the worst has to be her strange relationship with Shigure. There is hardly a moment where the two aren’t at odds.

From a young age, they have an unhealthy fixation on each other that borders obsession. They are violent and manipulative towards each other, willing to do anything to get the upper hand. Despite the intense love they share, their feelings are tainted by bitterness and rage. Their relationship is one of the most complicated in the series and is undoubtedly the hardest for fans to understand.
