On account of their very nature, superhero movies tend to feature highly unusual situations. With a volatile mix of superpowers, heroes, villains, and world-ending threats available, they have the ability to create scenarios that aren’t likely found anywhere else. As such, the quotes from superhero movies can sometimes be… strange.
However, some quotes take word assault to the next level. They’re odd by the fairly unusual standards of superhero movies, whether in or out of context. The strangeness might be deliberately emphasized for comedic purposes, but it doesn’t change the fact that some quotes are just plain weird.
10 “Rolling Down The Street Like A Turd In The Wind” – Venom, Venom
Very few superhero films have been as contentious in their enjoyability as Venom. Few argue that it’s as high quality as some of the best offerings the genre has, but opinions are split on whether it’s funny and entertaining or it simply tries too hard.
One of the flashpoints for these arguments is the above quote, which comes after Venom threatens to eat the arms and legs of a small-time thug. Its defenders argue that it’s deliberately melodramatic and gratuitous, while detractors say that it’s emblematic of the film’s flaws and impossible to take seriously. However, both groups agree that it’s an odd threat.
9 “If Aliens Wind Up Implanting Eggs In My Chest Or Something And I Eat You, I’m Sorry” – Peter Parker, Avengers: Infinity War
The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t a franchise that takes itself particularly seriously. Its heroes are always ready to make a quip to defuse the tension from a situation. However, some lines go slightly too far when creating a joke and end up coming across as unbelievable in the situation.
When Peter Parker, Stephen Strange, and Tony Stark arrive on Titan in Avengers: Infinity War, Peter delivers this line in his usual tone for pop culture quips. When Tony tells him to stop, Peter reveals that he meant it as a warning about the approaching Guardians of the Galaxy. As warnings go, it’s an unusually wordy one that doesn’t get to the point and contained no urgency.
8 “I Lost One Family. I’m Not Gonna Lose Another” – Diablo, Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad Director, David Ayer has claimed that his vision of the film had a vastly different tone and better development for the characters. In the released version of the film, the most common points of criticism are that the characters are underbaked, despite good performances, and that there is little in the way of emotional stakes.
One of the film’s few genuine moments comes when Diablo reveals his true strength to engage Enchantress’s brother, Incubus, on equal footing in a moving sacrifice. However, prior to this, Diablo delivers the above quote. Before this moment of selflessness, his time with the team largely consisted of bickering and only one bonding moment in a bar. Due to the film’s uneven pacing, many found his claims of “family” impossible to take seriously.
7 “Mister Doctor?” – Kaecilius, Doctor Strange
One of Doctor Strange‘s most impressive setpieces comes when Strange defends the New York Sanctum against Kaecilius and his minions, despite his inexperience. Prior to their fight, Kaecilius attempts to speak with Strange, inviting him to introduce himself with “Mister…?”
Strange (a surgeon) corrects the title, only for Kaecilius to misinterpret his name as “Mister Doctor” and refuse to acknowledge the correction. It’s entirely possible that Kaecilius is simply enjoying himself and taunting Strange, but the burst of awkward-situation comedy caught many off-guard – and remains one of the film’s best jokes.
6 “Can You Help Your Aunt Make An Online Dating Profile So She Can Get Out Of The House Once In A Dang While?” – Aunt May, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
For a relatively minor character, Aunt May won herself a large number of fans in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for her understated humor, performance, and ability to score some genuine emotional beats.
When the other Spider-People put Miles to the test to see if he’s ready for a mission to Kingpin’s lair, they hit him with a barrage of questions about his capabilities. Amongst the heroics, May asks Miles the above question. It’s an unusual time for her to pile in, and something of a break from her blunt, tired practicality in most of the film.
5 “Believe It Or Not, Deadpool 2 Is A Family Film” – Deadpool, Deadpool
A large part of Deadpool‘s appeal is his trademark sense of humor, which includes gratuitous crudity, fourth-wall-breaking, and sheer weirdness. As such, a lot of the quotes from the hero’s two films lean towards the odder end of the spectrum.
One that takes the cake in Deadpool 2 for being a fourth wall-break combined with a complete lie is Deadpool’s monologue at the beginning of the second movie. He claims his ultra-violent superhero film is for the whole family – a line that’s immediately proven to be false – and the sheer weirdness of it is an intentional part of its humor.
4 “Baskin Robbins Always Finds Out” – Luis, Ant-Man
The first part of Ant-Man deals with Scott Lang’s attempts to find legitimate employment so he can pay child support and see his daughter after getting out of prison. As an ex-convict, he struggles and resorts to lying to Baskin Robbins to get a job there.
The store finds out his history and fires him. When Scott tells Luis, he says the above quote. Funny on its own, it’s made funnier by being an exact echo of Scott’s manager. Fans appreciated the sheer weirdness of the idea of Baskin Robbins being top-notch investigators, and remember the quote fondly.
3 “You Are My Gift To This Handsome Hunka Hunka” – Joker, Suicide Squad
Of all the performances in Suicide Squad, Jared Leto’s Joker is perhaps the most notorious. Following Heath Ledger’s acclaimed time as the character was never going to be easy. However, many viewers felt that Leto fell far below expectations.
Although many of his lines are odd, the one that became infamous for its subject matter and delivery was the above quote. Tempting a fellow criminal by offering him Harley, the Joker makes the proclamation in an increasingly exaggerated tone of voice. Consequently, it perfectly encapsulates the flaws in Leto’s performance.
2 “Imagine If They Were Metal” – Magneto, X-Men: Days Of Future Past
X-Men: Days of Future Past is a movie dealing with time travel. As such, it invites strangeness due to its unusual scenario, and even the characters themselves struggle to keep things straight. However, the strangest quote in the film is a simple joke directed towards the audience.
After seeing Wolverine’s claws, Magneto delivers the above line. It’s purely for the audience’s benefit (considering how unlikely it is that Magneto could predict what would happen to Wolverine). As a result, the line comes off as an incredibly strange comment to make about a part of somebody’s body.
1 “Save Martha” – Clark Kent, Batman V. Superman
The ending to the titular fight of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is one of the most notorious moments in comic book movie history. After a vicious struggle that sees Superman at Batman’s mercy, Batman is about to strike the killing blow when Superman cries out for Bruce to save his mother.
Superman calling his mum by her first name is already weird. Furthermore, it’s clearly a tortured way to inform the audience that Superman and Batman’s mothers share the same name. No less strange is Bruce’s response, which is to pause and ask why Superman would say “Martha.” The fact the line ends the fight is viewed as one of the worst plot points of the film.
