With the recent announcement that Insomniac Games are working on a follow-up to their incredibly successful and well-loved ps4/ps5 games, 2018s Spider-Man and 2020s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, fans can’t wait to see what they have in store for them. Speculation runs rife with what villains will be doing battle against the duo of web-slingers, with the much asked for Venom already teased.
The prospect of getting behind the controls of everyone’s favorite Spider-Men once again is a tantalizing prospect for many. However, the fact remains that players have already been treated to two games set in this universe in a very short period – and there is an argument that it may still be too early to return.
10 Not Enough Time Has Passed Since The Remaster
The remastered version of Spider-Man on PS5 has been met with great acclaim, and both plays and looks fantastic. As a launch title for the system, it more than showed off how powerful the new Playstation could be while bringing in a whole new group of fans to the franchise.
The remaster is so good that it almost seems a shame to replace it with a sequel so soon. With only two years since the original release, many fans of the original chose to skip over the upgrade, with the 2018 version still fresh in their minds. There is a fear that new fans who jumped on with the remaster may feel the same about the sequel, and choose to skip over it in much the same way.
9 There Hasn’t Been A Big Enough Leap In Hardware
Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales both look incredible on the PS5; however, it comes at a cost. With the PS5s ability to choose between “Performance” or “Fidelity” modes, you can either have glorious, eye-popping 4k raytracing but the game running at 30fps, or a slightly diminished visual experience, but at full 60fps.
While this isn’t that much of a dealbreaker, and the game looks beautiful in either mode, the question arises would it not be better to wait until an upgraded PS5 model is released. A model that can fully take advantage of both raytracing and 60fps simultaneously before a sequel is released, since we already have this version pushing the console to its limits.
8 We Have Already Fought A Lot Of The Big Villains
While Spider-Man has one of the largest and most unique collections of foes in the entire history of comic books, players have already been treated to many of them in the original game and its Miles Morales sequel. While Venom is the obvious next step for the franchise and a much-requested addition from fans, we may be coming to the end of the list of well-known characters.
If rumors are to be believed and Kraven is also included in the sequel, then it will no doubt be a great adventure nonetheless, with the prospect of fighting both him and Venom being very exciting. It does, however, not leave a lot of room for the future without starting to double-dip.
7 Spider-Man: Miles Morales Only Just Came Out
With only a year since the brilliant Spider-Man: Miles Morales was released, Insomniac Games runs the risk of slipping into franchise fatigue. Two years in-between installments see the series venturing dangerously close into the territory of games such as Assassins Creed and Call of Duty, with their yearly entries and inevitable diminishing improvements over time.
As great as Miles Morales was, it did feel as somewhat of a stepping-stone in-between entries, or a very, very content-packed piece of DLC. Hopefully, this was merely developed to whet the whistle while the studio works on a more fully-fledged sequel. Spider-Man 2 needs much more to offer in terms of story and different things to see and do.
6 How Much More Can They Do With New York?
The New York featured in the Spider-Man games is one of the most spectacular, breath-taking open worlds ever seen in a video game. It feels like a real, lived-in, living space that is so brilliant to traverse, explore, and swing around in that you could spend hours doing so without even touching the main story.
However, the downside to this is that players have now had the chance to do this in two separate games, and there is only so much that can be done to a real-life city to change it for future installments. Hopefully, the sequel brings in a few new surprises, such as interiors to lose yourself in or even new islands outside Manhattan to venture across.
5 The Curse Of Avengers Still Looms Over Marvel Games
The recent release of the fantastic Guardians of the Galaxy game has been met with almost universal critical acclaim. However, sales have not set the world on fire, and many factors may be to blame for this. However, one of the most widely accepted arguments is that people are wary of dropping cash on a Marvel game so soon after being burned by the disastrous release of Marvel’s Avengers in 2020.
Plagued with bugs, a rushed release, lack of content, and seemingly no communication between developers and fans, Avengers has harmed the name of Marvel within the video game sphere so badly that the wounds may not have fully healed even by the time that Spider-Man 2 comes around.
4 Spider-Man (And Marvel) Fatigue May Be Starting To Set In
As the lower performance, both financially and critically, of recent Marvel films can attest, some people have begun to grow tired of the endless supply of Marvel products being constantly produced. While fans of the franchise still lap up every installment, more casual viewers are starting to pass up the opportunities to consume everything on offer.
With many Spider-Man films being released over the past few years, as well as video games, franchise fatigue has a very good chance of setting in for the character. Hopefully, the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home is successful enough to prove once again that the character is timeless.
3 Fans Want More Solo Miles
The problem with the relatively short length of Spider-Man: Miles Morales is that players were left wanting more of the character. While Peter Parker is most people’s go to when they think about Spider-Man, Miles’s journey in his solo game was so great that many would love to see a continuation that features him and him alone.
It is great that the sequel is going to feature both characters as playable protagonists. However, Peter Parker’s story at the end of the first game felt very well wrapped up. It left open a world in which Miles could go out and take over the mantle, finally relieving Peter of the stresses of being a hero, at least for the time being.
2 The PS5 Drought Is Still Being Felt
With many players still unable to get their hands on an elusive Playstation 5 console, with no guarantees that they will be able to even by the time Spider-Man 2 releases in 2023, there is a massively hobbled player base from the outset. Spider-Man 2 will undoubtedly send the demand for the console through the roof, but many players may still be left disappointed.
Hopefully, things start to change moving forwards, and more consoles begin to trickle out into the world. It would be a massive shame for anybody to miss out on what is shaping up to be a brilliant game.
1 There’s Still A Whole Untapped Universe To Delve Into
Along with the reveal of the upcoming Spider-Man 2, fans of Marvel were also treated to the surprise announcement that Insomniac Games are working on a Wolverine title, scheduled for release sometime in the next few years.
This announcement had fans cheering the world over and showed players that there was a whole universe of characters out there ready to be utilized for new titles. With excitement at an all-time high, it would seem logical to release one of these non-Spider-Man games in-between so as not to over-saturate the market.
