With the advent of the Multiverse in the MCU after the events of Loki, it couldn’t be a better time for What If…? to be on Disney+. It’s almost like someone planned it that way. Regardless, the questions being posed by the series have been far more poignant than anyone could have expected.
As such, it would be interesting to see the gaze of The Watcher turned to forgotten universes, such as Marvel’s Netflix series. The shows were formerly a tangential part of the MCU but are no longer considered to be part of the continuity. That doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be some interesting stories to tell.
10 Shang-Chi Gets To Beat Up Iron Fist
There were a lot of great parts to Marvel’s Netflix series. The big part of the concept’s success was the great casting of most of the characters. Unfortunately, the casting of Iron Fist was remarkably terrible.
Supposedly a master of kung fu, all of Iron Fist’s fight scenes were awkward and difficult to watch. A great What If…? story would put Iron Fist face-to-face with the top fighter in the MCU, Shang-Chi. Watching Iron Fist get his butt handed to him would be incredibly cathartic.
9 Kingpin Becomes The Major Villain He Was Meant To Be
While Iron Fist was a low point for Marvel’s Netflix, Vincent D’Onofrio’s depiction of Kingpin was the high point. He was Daredevil’s main villain but he should have become the villain for the entire franchise. Kingpin was just so compelling and engaging.
In another universe, that version of Kingpin would have and should have become a major villain in the greater MCU. What If…? provides an opportunity to make that happen, facing off against another prominent foe in Spider-Man.
8 Spider-Man Finally Shows Up
Speaking of everyone’s favorite Wall-Crawler, not seeing Spider-Man swinging around New York with Daredevil never seemed quite right. There is an incredibly strong connection between him and all of these heroes that it felt like he should have been part of it, too.
That, of course, did not happen for a number of reasons. But What If…? certainly sets the stage for a meet-up between them. If nothing else, seeing Peter Parker drive Matt Murdock nuts would be worth the effort.
7 J. Jonah Jameson Rants About Someone Else
When fans get Spider-Man, they also get J. Jonah Jameson. The publisher of The Daily Bugle hates Spider-Man with a fiery passion that few people understand. While this can be funny at times, it can also get a little tedious.
Naturally, this wouldn’t be the focus of an entire What If…? episode. At the same time, it would be a nice addition to another episode. Watching him mock Jessica Jones would be interesting since she would end up quite literally kicking his door in to file a complaint.
6 The Avengers Have To Deal With The Punisher
Calling Frank Castle a superhero is a tough sell. At this point in the comics, he’s basically a mass murderer that almost leans towards being a serial killer some days. The version of the Punisher in Marvel’s Netflix was certainly a lot more complex and almost relatable at times.
That doesn’t mean he wasn’t a handful, though. Given the number of bodies he left around New York and the copious amounts of property damage he caused, it’s a wonder that the Avengers never came looking for him. In What If…?, that might finally happen.
5 The Defenders Fight Thanos
In the final fight against Thanos, Doctor Strange, Wong, and the rest of their mystical pals brought in all the recently resurrected heroes they could get their hands on. That included the armies of Wakanda, Asgard, and more.
Noticeable by their absence were The Defenders. Their exclusion from that final fight was odd, to say the least. Finding out what would have happened if the Defenders had been part of Avengers: Endgame would be an absolute layup.
4 Jessica Jones Investigates Tony Stark
Jessica Jones was a lot of things on top of being a powered individual. In addition to being a professional drinker, she was also a darn good private detective. It got her into a lot of trouble but she made relatively good money doing it.
It’s not hard to imagine that someone would have eventually hired her to investigate Tony Stark. That being said, Tony would have probably paid her more money to work for him. It would have been a match made in Jessica’s bank account.
3 Daredevil Versus Captain America
When it comes right down to it, the big appeal of a series like What If…? is the opportunity to watch some dream matches happen. That includes several of Marvel’s Netflix characters who could have been involved in some real doozies.
Watching Daredevil square off against Captain America would be incredible. The only thing that would be better would be Captain America facing off against Wolverine. Actually, Wolverine and Daredevil fighting in the MCU in any fashion would be good, too.
2 Luke Cage Joins The Avengers
Over the course of their existence, the Avengers have had a lot of members. To be honest, a significant portion of the entire Marvel roster of heroes and even some of the villains have been on the team at one time or another.
Luke Cage eventually became a key member of the team. It was actually kind of a letdown to not see him join the team in the MCU. It may never happen in the MCU proper, but the multiverse does offer an opportunity to make it a reality.
1 Finally Connecting The MCU & Marvel Netflix
Throughout the run of the various series that made up Marvel’s Netflix, fans kept waiting for the dots to be connected with the MCU. There were some very loose points of commonality but never anything concrete.
This really started to be an issue when a bunch of ninja were tearing up New York and the Avengers did absolutely nothing about it. This is a situation that could finally be rectified in What If…? by putting the Defenders and the Avengers together.
