December 2021 will see the release of the hugely-anticipated movie Spider-Man: No Way Home, the (potential) finale to the Tom Holland-starring series. After two prior solo movies and appearances alongside the (and even against some) Avengers, Holland’s Spider-Man has faced a unique batch of threats.
Despite all of these other encounters, they probably haven’t prepared Peter Parker for his newest and weirdest challenge yet, the emergence of numerous villains from alternate realities who have a score to settle with him. That said, who else should he have battled against before this multiverse of madness kicks off?
10 The Lizard Is A Classic Monster Villain
The Lizard debuted in 1963 and was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and has remained a solid antagonist over the years. Dr. Curt Conners is a classic Frankenstein’s monster character who only wanted to regrow his lost arm but accidentally condemned himself to a life of villainy.
The Lizard has already appeared in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, played by Rhys Ifans, and rumors persist that he may in fact return in No Way Home. Seeing as the multiverse is in play, Lizard could easily have been rebooted along with Parker in the MCU and given him a credible physical threat to defeat.
9 The Kingpin Is A Whole New Kind Of Enemy
Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin of Crime, first appeared in 1967 thanks to Stan Lee and John Romita Sr. While many associate him as a Daredevil villain due to his frequent comic clashes with the man without fear, he actually first showed up in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man.
Actor Vincent D’Onofrio received critical acclaim for his performance as Fisk in Netflix’s Daredevil series, and many fans championed the notion of him crossing over into the MCU films. Whether D’Onofrio returned to battle Tom Holland or a new actor took over the reins, the Kingpin would make for a unique antagonist.
8 Kraven Could Set Up An Iconic Storyline
Sergei Kravinoff is better known as Kraven the Hunter and dedicates his life to taking on the deadliest game across the planet. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964, Sergei is one of Spider-Man’s most unique enemies and is most noted for being the driving force behind the famous storyline Kraven’s Last Hunt.
A film based on KLH would be a lot darker than a typical MCU entry, but that’s exactly what could make it one of the strongest as well. The potential for Holland meeting the Hunter is ramping up now that Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been cast in a solo Kraven film to be released in 2023. Perhaps Spider-Man will appear in the villain’s film, rather than the other way round.
7 The Black Cat Could Allow For A Fun Spin
Felicia Hardy made a pretty big impact on Spider-Man as her mischievous alter-ego, the Black Cat. First appearing in 1979 from creators Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard, Hardy has been on every side of the fence with stints as a criminal with a heart of gold, a legitimate hero, and at times even a serious enemy to Spider-Man. To complicate matters much further, she has also been a love interest to the wall-crawler.
Black Cat has been sorely missing from the big screen and would allow for a very unique take on the usual “hero vs villain” formula, with their flirtations leading to genuine romance before a dark twist sends them into a final confrontation. Of course, she could potentially be redeemed by the end and leave the door open for future appearances or even a solo spin-off. So far, she has only appeared in civilian form in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
6 Morbius Could Have Brought Some Horror Into The MCU
Ahead of Kraven’s big movie debut, Dr. Michael Morbius will beat him to the punch in 2022’s Morbius from Sony Pictures. The character is often described as a “living vampire” and could have brought some fun horror into the MCU and set any film he featured in apart from the rest.
Like the Lizard, Morbius set out to cure himself of an ailment and was met with disastrous results, leaving him with a dependency for blood. He has frequently battled Spider-Man but has also helped him and others as something of an anti-hero, which could also have given him a unique edge for an MCU Spider-villain.
5 Chameleon Has Already Been Introduced
Dimitri Smerdyakov, aka the Chameleon, was introduced in 1963 thanks to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. He happens to be the first villain to ever face off against Spider-Man and he’s continued to plague the hero ever since, and his unique talents would make for some fun on-screen mayhem.
In fact, he already popped up in Spider-Man: Far From Home posing as the new bus driver for Parker’s field trip. With his introduction already set, he could easily have been expanded into a major villain role before Spider-Man’s time with the multiverse in December 2021.
4 The Green Goblin Is Spider-Man’s Arch-Nemesis
The MCU has already reimagined classic villains such as the Vulture and Mysterio and made them fan favorites, and another bad guy begging for that treatment is none other than the Green Goblin, first introduced in 1964 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. After a fun and campy appearance in 2002’s Spider-Man and a controversial revamp in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it would have been fun to see a whole new take on Spidey’s arch-enemy.
Trailers for Spider-Man: NWH strongly suggest that the Goblin will indeed return thanks to the multiverse, but that doesn’t mean fans couldn’t have been treated to an original take before then. Whether the version presented would have been Norman Osborn, his son Harry, or perhaps someone entirely new, it could have been something very engaging to see.
3 The Hobgoblin Could Embrace A Dark Legacy
Perhaps the MCU could have skipped the Green Goblin entirely and gone straight to the Hobgoblin instead. The first version of the character was created in 1983 by Roger Stern and John Romita Jr. and helped himself to Norman Osborn’s tech after discovering one of his hideouts.
Several different criminals have used the Hobgoblin name, including none other than Peter’s best friend in the MCU, the lovable Ned Leeds. While he turned out to have been brainwashed into acting as the villain, such a plot device could have added in a huge personal stake for Peter as he would have to battle his own friend in order to save him.
2 The Jackal Is A Mad Genius With A Unique Scheme
Miles Warren, aka the Jackal, is a deranged scientist obsessed with cloning. He first appeared in 1965, thanks to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, as a professor at Peter Parker’s university before becoming a supervillain. His demented hobby led to creating multiple clones of Parker as well as others and also augmenting his own body into a monstrous form.
The Jackal’s cloning experiments could make for an insane premise for a Spider-Man film, with the hero battling other versions of himself along with the major villain. It could also have introduced beloved characters such as Ben Reilly and Kaine and given Holland a lot more to work with on the screen.
1 Venom Needs To Fight Holland’s Spider-Man One Way Or Another
At present, it’s unknown if Tom Hardy’s Venom will make an appearance in Spider-Man: NWH, but thanks to the multiverse playing a significant part in the story, it’s certainly possible. Regardless, the MCU could have tried to showcase its own new spin on the iconic villain/anti-hero.
Created in 1988 by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane, Venom became an instant fan-favorite and has already headlined two recent solo films as well as a role in 2007’s Spider-Man 3. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t have seen a third iteration and be pitted against Tom Holland’s version of the web-slinger for a battle royale.
