Since its creation in 1984 during developmental testing, the Konami Code has become a major part of gaming culture. While it was created for Konami’s Gradius, a scrolling shooter for the NES, it was popularized in Contra, an extremely difficult run and gun shooter, earning it the nicknames of “Contra Code” and “30 Lives Code.”
Its impact on the gaming world has been felt constantly in the decades since, with the code appearing in dozens of Konami games, but its influence didn’t stop there. Movies and television shows, like Wreck-It Ralph, have used the code as a geeky reference. The code is also used in various games and websites to this day, leading to fun or weird surprises.
10 Discord – 404 Page Turns Into Snake
Discord has become the top app for messaging and voice chatting over the last few years, surpassing similar systems like Team Speak and Slack. Notably, gamers have turned to the platform as its app interfaces with many games.
Discord seems to have gaming in its blood, from partnering with Epic for their recent Discord Nitro trials to its focus on gaming communities. If you happen to get to Discord’s 404 Page, you can input the Konami code to indulge in a little gaming through a cutesy version of Snake, called SNEK.
9 BioShock Infinite – Unlock The 1999 Hard Mode
Some players may have found the regular difficulties in the story of BioShock Infinite to be challenging, but there is always a gamer out there that needs a harder setting. That is where the 1999 Mode comes in.
Pre-2000s games were typically harder as they had limited save points, constantly low health, and lacked power-ups and ammo refills, like in the original Resident Evil. BioShock Infinite brings nostalgia and a harder difficulty to challenge players. All players have to do is enter the Konami Code on launch to unlock the mode.
8 Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant – Get Called A Cheater And More
The age of the smart assistant is in full swing with Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, and more. Some of these assistants will allow you to just order groceries, or even play through Skyrim vocally.
On all of these systems, if you speak the Konami Code aloud, you will hear a collection of phrases. On Siri, the bot will call you a “cheater” or “nerd.” With Amazon’s Alexa, you’ll hear one of two phrases about either Super Alexa or power-ups. Google Assistant will activate cheat mode or give you a trophy. Try them for yourself.
7 Overwatch Website – D.Va Cheer And Rain
Browsing website after website can get to be boring, but nothing keeps drawing fans back to video game websites like the occasional easter egg. Being a major title, it is nice to see Overwatch giving a shoutout to historical gaming moments like the Konami Code.
Entering the code anywhere on the site will cause D.Va to shout the code out loud and make a rainfall of tiny D.Vas in her mech. She was chosen because her character is a former pro gamer.
6 Bank Of Canada – O Canada Plays Over A Cash Rainfall
Bank websites are not typically somewhere to go for fun times unless someone really loves paying bills. The Bank Of Canada recognized this and made an interactive page of their 10 dollar note. While that is cool on its own, it is only made better with the code.
Entering the Konami Code on the site will reap two rewards. The first is a chiptune version of “O Canada.” The second rains down tiny 10 dollar notes. It makes for a fun time if anyone is existentially bored, plus the note is shiny, so spinning it looks cool.
5 Dead By Daylight – Unlock A Tune And A Charm
As far as games playing out homages go, Dead By Daylight is one of the best, collecting top-tier horror characters from franchises like Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street, Scream, and Saw.
Recently, two game franchises have been brought into the fold, Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The latter is where the Konami Code comes in. If the player selects either strong killer Pyramid Head or survivor Cheryl Mason then enters the code, they unlock a sound bite and a charm from Gradius to put on their character.
4 Nik Daum’s Website – Unlock True Art With The Code
It would be a fair question to ask who Nik Daum is as he isn’t a popular Twitter user or even a C-List actor. An artist and comedian dealing in design, photography, illustration, and art direction, his work includes several Old Spice, Under Armor, Xbox, and Nestea advertisements.
He has a website that became highly trafficked due to his implementation of the Konami Code. By entering the code, the viewer will be presented with the spinning head of Daum, a psychedelic swirling background, and an instrumental version of “Take On Me” by a-ha.
3 Tetris Effect – Unlock The 1984 Version
Tetris Effect was one of the top games of 2018, being nominated as Game Of The Year across multiple sites and awards groups. The game introduced the 1989 version, based on the GameBoy version, as an unlockable at level 50.
However, that wasn’t enough for some fans who wanted more variety, which is where the 1984 version came in. This version was low-tech and included retro music and a graphed photo of Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov. It was unlocked by first entering the Konami code, then “06061984,” the birthdate of the series.
2 Unreal Engine 5 – Dabbing On The Demo
The most recent example of the Konami Code seeping into external areas, Unreal Engine 5, which is a game engine used by many developers featured in games like Fortnite and Final Fantasy VII Remake. Though Unreal Engine 5 hasn’t been released yet, there was a demo released which features a fun nod to the code.
By entering the code in the Valley of the Ancient demo, players and coders will find a giant robot that dabs constantly forever, or until the engine is closed. Dabbing has become a huge part of pop culture, so the merge of the Konami Code and Dabbing does make sense.
1 Just Dance 3 – Barbra Gets Extreme
Barbra Streisand is known by many to be a singer, Broadway star, and actress. To some, however, her name is synonymous with the 2010 hit dance song, “Barbra Streisand” by DJs Duck Sauce. Upon release, multiple television shows, movies, and video games, including Just Dance 3, picked up the song.
There are two versions of the song in this game, original which has a difficulty rating of 2, and the “extreme” version with a difficulty rating of 3. “Barbra Streisand” is the only song in the game to be unlocked via a code, specifically the Konami Code.
