Battles and fights are an integral part of multiple shonen anime. The animation’s fluidity makes each and every fight intense and jaw-dropping. The character showcasing their special moves and weapons make each fight unique. Battles are how characters can come to understand one another, grow stronger, and of course, protect those they care about.
Fights on land are known to be intense to anime watchers, but what about battles underwater? Characters lacking the oxygen needed to breathe or encountering battles waged in unfamiliar and possibly unsuited environments, test the strength of our heroes’ powers and abilities. These aquatic fights may just be some of the most intense battles in anime, at the very least they make viewers hold their breath when watching.
10 Lucy Faces Off Minerva In The Grand Magic Games (fairy tail)
One underwater battle that may have left fans holding their breath occurs in the Fairy Tail anime. At the Grand Magic Games, Fairy Tail wizard Lucy comes face to face with Minerva of Sabertooth in the Naval Battle. Lucy states that she would not lose to the Sabertooth wizard, despite Minerva being from the number one guild.
Lucy boldly states that Fairy Tail will win the Grand Magic Games and become number one again. Angered by Lucy’s insubordination, Minerva steals Lucy’s gate keys and begins ruthlessly attacking her. Lucy, helpless, takes attack after attack, never surrendering to Minerva until the battle is called off by Arcadios. Despite Minerva’s beatings, Lucy never forfeited and managed to win second place and eight points for Fairy Tail.
9 Noelle Protects Her Family (black clover)
In Black Clover’s Elf Reincarnation arc, the Clover Kingdom was under attack by elves, and Noelle’s siblings were no exception. Solid and Nebra come face to face with Kivn, an elf who uses compass magic. The two Magic Knights fall victim to her attacks and are unable to defend themselves. Noelle and Nozel come to help their siblings and takedown Kivn, but they are faced with the conundrum of Kivn’s magic disruption spell.
Unable to figure out how to save her arguably ungrateful and cruel siblings, Noelle comes up with an idea that only an outrageous member of the Black Bulls would. Noelle uses her magic to completely flood Kivn’s sealed space, while Nozel uses his magic to protect them. In doing so, Noelle forces Kivn to call off her spell in order to survive and is captured by Nozel.
8 Zoro vs. Hordy is breathtaking(One Piece)
The One Piece anime is filled with intense battles and one such battle is between Zoro and Hordy. Hordy, who wants to destroy the Ryugu Kingdom has come face to face with Zoro who, along with his friends, accidentally seized the palace. The two become engaged in an intense underwater battle.
Hordy, who can breathe even when submerged, seems to have the upper hand. However, Zoro is determined not to give up. The two exchange a myriad of blows while underwater. Hordy with his arrows and Zoro with his sword strikes. Despite running out of air, Zoro is able to defeat Hordy with a single strike with his sword.
7 Deku, Froppy, & Grape Juice Battle Villains (my hero academia)
In My Hero Academia, the students of 1-A seem to find themselves in precarious situations. One such situation occurred during their rescue training. Shigaraki and his league of villains infiltrated U.A. and attacked the students. Deku, Froppy, and Grape Juice find themselves at the Flood Zone surrounded by villains with water-suited Quirks. In order to escape, Deku comes up with a plan that would rely on all their Quirks.
Deku uses ‘Delaware Smash’ in order to create a strong wave that forces the villains away from the ship. Froppy then uses her frog powers to keep Deku and Grape Juice away from the villains. Unable to swim against the strong current, the villains fall victim to Grape Juice’s ‘Sticky Balls’ and are rounded up as the current reconverges in the center.
6 Lucia Saves Kaito & Obtains Her Pearl (Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch)
In the anime Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch, a young mermaid named Lucia comes to land from her ocean home in order to find her pearl and the boy she had given it to many years ago. In her search, she meets a boy named Kaito, who could be the boy she had saved from drowning when they were children.
Lucia’s suspicions are confirmed when Kaito is held captive underwater by a water demon named Izuru. He is able to return the pearl to Lucia despite Izuru’s interference and Lucia is able to transform into her idol form. Lucia, now able to unlock her princess power, defeats Izuru with the power of song.
5 Ledo & Chamber Battle Whale-squid (Gargantia On The Verdurous Planet)
Most anime fans are accustomed to mecha fights occurring in space, however in Gargantia On The Verdurous Planet, Ledo and his Machine Caliber, Chamber, battle underwater. Ledo and Chamber have dedicated themselves to eradicating the Hideauze, squid-like aliens.
When the two find themselves on a post-apocalyptic Earth they continue their battle attacking Whale-squid. The squids attack only when provoked. However, when Ledo and Chamber come across them, to access a treasure trove, they are engaged in battle. Ledo and Chamber are able to defeat the squids despite their overwhelming numbers and size. However, that victory is bittersweet once they learn the truth behind the squids’ origins.
4 Gray vs. Ultear had fans on the edge of their seat (Fairy Tail)
Although this frigid battle does not entirely take place underwater, the portion that had fans on the edge of their seat did. Gray confronted Ultear, a member of the dark guild, Grimoire Heart, and the daughter of his late master. As the two battle it out with their Ice-Make magic they fall into the ocean. The two continue to attack once underwater, but Ultear is distracted by a voice calling out for help.
The voice belonged to Ur, and Ultear begins to see what had really occurred when she was a child. Her mother’s consciousness now part of the ocean shows Ultear that she was never abandoned as she had believed. Unable to continue fighting, Ultear loses to Gray but it isn’t a complete loss because now she knows that her mother always loved her.
3 Black Bulls Battle Vetto (black clover)
Although this battle may be lacking water, it is submerged and equally nerve-wracking. As Asta and the Black Bulls arrive at the Underwater Temple, they are attacked by Vetto, a member of the Midnight Sun. Vetto comes face to face with multiple Black Bull members.
Asta, with Vanessa and Finral’s help, is able to overpower him. However, the battle is not over. Vetto releases his mana with the intent of destroying himself and the entire temple. Thankfully, Captain Yami shows up and is able to defeat Vetto by pushing past his limits with a new spell, ‘Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash.’
2 Sally vs. Dungeon Boss was one hair-raising battle (Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense)
Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense is all about exploring dungeons and having battles. One hair-raising boss battle occurred in an underwater cave. Sally, while raising her skills, comes face to face with a giant fish monster. Only able to hold her breath for 20 minutes, Sally must defeat the underwater boss or suffer the consequences.
With the clock ticking down, Sally unleashes all the moves she has acquired while leveling up. However, the fish is a tough opponent with strong scales, incredible speed, and magic skills of its own. Sally, however, is also just as strong, focusing all her attacks onto one spot, decapitating the monster, and obtaining some amazing loot.
1 Luffy, Zoro, & Sanji Against Kraken (one piece)
The Straw Hats encounter a Kraken while on their journey to Fishman Island. Instead of sailing away in fear like normal people, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji decide to fight the overgrown octopus. Despite the Kraken’s intimidating size and strength and the fact that they would be fighting it underwater, the ‘Monster Trio’ is not the least bit intimidated.
Rather, they each seem excited to try out their new moves on the creature. The battle starts off with Sanji and Zoro injuring the creature’s tentacles. The battle ends with Luffy blasting the Kraken away with his ‘Elephant Gun.’ The Kraken never stood a chance.
