Making television is a dream come true for many people. The goal of seeing something you helped create be enjoyed by millions of people around the world is alluring, to say the least. But sometimes, that dream takes a dark turn that cannot be corrected.
While this doesn’t happen all the time, episodes of various TV series have been completely lost over the years. There are a variety of reasons this happens, with human error and unsafe storage practices being at the top of the list. Regardless of how it happened, it’s rough when someone’s hard work is lost.
10 Dollhouse Had A Much Different First Episode
There have been a lot of science fiction series that were not given the chance to thrive. Naturally, fans immediately think of shows like Firefly but there have been others such as Dollhouse which was canceled after two seasons.
The Eliza Dushku-starring series had a first episode that ended up being completely taken apart, though it was completed. The footage was used in other episodes throughout the first season but it was never seen in the way it was initially intended.
9 A Friends Episode Was Heavily Edited Due To 9/11
For a decade, Friends was the most popular sitcom in the world. It was a huge part of NBC’s dominant “Must See TV” programming block alongside other series like Will & Grace, Seinfeld, and Fraiser.
While Season 8, Episode 3 isn’t exactly lost, the original cut certainly is. It featured Monica and Chandler being unable to get on a plane because Chandler made a joke about a bomb in the airport. It was scheduled to air just weeks have 9/11 and required major edits for obvious reasons.
8 All Of Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo Season 5
An inexplicably popular series, Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo detailed the young life of Alana “Honey Boo-Boo” Thompson as she tried to make it on the pageant circuit with the support of her family.
The series was canceled after Season 4 when it was revealed that her mother, June, was allegedly involved with a convicted child sex offender. Season 5 was in the can when the cancellation hit and has never been seen.
7 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Has A Secret Pilot
The Power Rangers is one of the biggest multi-media franchises in the world. It has appeared in every conceivable media and merchandising format. And it all got its start in a TV series called the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
As is often the case, a pilot was produced to get networks interested. The end result was an episode that looked a lot different from what fans know and love. That pilot has never made it to air and has achieved somewhat legendary status among fans.
6 A Random Episode Of Dark Shadows Cannot Be Found
When it comes to cult classic TV series, it’s hard to top Dark Shadows. This campy, gothic soap opera detailed the lives of the woefully and wonderfully macabre Collins family of Collinsport, Maine. Its supernatural elements made it a hit with fans during its original run from 1966 to 1971.
There is one episode randomly missing from the final story arcs of the series. No one knows what happened to it, or how only one episode from that era went missing. It does create an odd narrative gap, though.
5 Sesame Street Is Missing A Lot Of Episodes
Created by the legendary Jim Henson, Sesame Street has been consistently on the air since 1969. It quickly became the benchmark for children’s programming thanks to its seamless blend of comedy, education, and life lessons.
Over the years, several episodes have gone missing from the archives. One of them actually focused on Mr. Snuffleupagus’s parents getting divorced. It was shelved after it went over poorly with the test audience of children who watched it and got incredibly upset.
4 Several Episodes Of The Avengers Are Missing
While the MCU’s iteration of the Avengers has proven to be popular, there was a pop culture phenomenon of the same name that preceded it. The Avengers was a 1960’s British series that focused on the adventures of secret agent John Steed and his various assistants.
Oddly enough, most of the first season is apparently missing from the archives. It was quite different from the others seasons as John Steed was the assistant to David Keel, the main character who left after Season 1.
3 Culling The Top Of The Pops Lost The Final Beatles Performance
Top of the Pops remains one of the most legendary music programs in the history of the BBC. Airing its first episode in 1964, this music chart program remained on the air until 2006. Throughout its run, it featured icons like The Who, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and hundreds more.
It is, without question, a key part of music history. Unfortunately, 508 of its total 2269 episodes have gone missing over the years. That includes the episode that featured the final performance of The Beatles on live TV. It’s definitely one fans wish they could get back.
2 So Many Doctor Who Episodes Are MIA
British TV has a tendency to create long-lasting legacies that fans carry for decades. That has certainly been true of shows like Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the aforementioned Top of the Pops. Then, there’s Doctor Who.
The good Doctor has been having adventures in space and time since 1963. Out of the 862 episodes that have been released to date, 97 of them have gone missing from BBC’s archives. That number used to be much larger but copies have turned up in some unexpected places over the years.
1 10 Seasons Of The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson Are Gone
Late-night talk shows have been hosted by a series of comedy legends over the years, such as David Letterman and Conan O’Brien. But the man everyone who gets into that game wants to be is the late Johnny Carson, the iconic host of The Tonight Show from 1962 to 1992.
Early broadcasters didn’t save old episodes of series like this and often deleted them so the tapes could be used again. At least ten seasons of Carson’s tenure on The Tonight Show, including his first episode, are gone. Apparently, Carson was happy with that as he wasn’t pleased with his early episodes.
