There are many anime series that connect with audiences in unprecedented ways, but the level of enthusiasm that continues to surround Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball Z is seriously impressive. Toriyama’s reliable shonen series has entertained audiences for decades, and it’s become one of the formative anime of its kind. Dragon Ball Z features tons of powerful warriors, but it’s their elite Saiyan race that is typically pushed into the spotlight.
Dragon Ball Z routinely showcases Goku and Vegeta as its superlative Saiyans, but there are some distinct differences between them that speak to why Vegeta is the one who brings more pride to his people and their roots.
10 He’s Royalty Among The Saiyan Race
One of the most striking details about Vegeta when he’s first introduced is that he’s not just a Saiyan, but a prestigious member of the royal family who used to rule over Planet Vegeta. Vegeta is the Prince of the Saiyan people and the son of King Vegeta. These honorary titles can sometimes be superfluous, but Vegeta holds his ranking with high esteem and doesn’t take it for granted even after the majority of the Saiyan race is eliminated. Vegeta continues to hold himself to the standards of the Prince of Saiyans, whereas Goku’s existence is much more lackadaisical.
9 He Can Control His Great Ape Transformation
One of the major defining traits of the Saiyan race during the infancy of Dragon Ball Z is that they can transform into ferocious Great Apes when they witness a full moon. Dragon Ball Z explains that this Great Ape transformation is unstable for low-level Saiyans, but the race’s elite are actually able to control the form. Vegeta, for instance, has control over his Great Ape form, which represents a Saiyan warrior at their best. Goku can’t control his Great Ape form in the same way, and Vegeta also keeps the Saiyan’s trademark tail for longer than Goku.
8 He Achieves The Super Saiyan God Form On His Own
The debut of Beerus also triggers the introduction of the new transformation, Super Saiyan God. The first instance of this involves a thorough ceremony where multiple Saiyans donate their energy to one who is pure of heart and channel the power into a Super Saiyan God.
Goku receives this honor, but later on in the series, it’s shown that Vegeta also achieves Super Saiyan God status. However, Vegeta reaches this milestone without the assistance of a Super Saiyan God ceremony. The specifics aren’t covered, but it implies a more natural level of Saiyan strength in Vegeta than what’s within Goku.
7 He Actually Conquers Planets
The mission and purpose of the Saiyan people have evolved over the years, but their roots go back to a race of warriors who conquer other planets. This perspective may now come across as somewhat archaic, but it’s important to recognize that Vegeta still fulfills this early benchmark of his people. Saiyans are sent to Earth for the purpose of domination, which clearly evades Goku. Vegeta, however, does still exhibit signs of a Saiyan conqueror. Universes 7 and 6 are connected, which means that there are still some surviving Saiyans in Universe 6. These Saiyans learn a lot from their Universe 7 counterparts, including how to become Super Saiyans, but Vegeta becomes especially interested in their development. 5 He Continues To Proudly Wear Saiyan Armor
Dragon Ball Z goes on for nearly 300 episodes, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the outfits and designs of certain characters experience change over time. Different Dragon Ball Z sagas showcase different styles and forms of armor that are reflective of mentors or other conditions.
Vegeta enters the series in official Saiyan armor, which becomes his trademark look for a while. Vegeta continues to wear variations on the standard Saiyan apparel throughout the series, whereas Goku’s attire reflects Earth’s influence on him instead.
4 He Endures & Overcomes Multiple Corruptions
Saiyans are incredibly strong in a physical sense, but the race also exhibits excellent resolve and inner strength. These conditions can sometimes be difficult to examine, but Vegeta proves that he’s the embodiment of outer and inner strength through his repeated infections. Vegeta has been taken over by malevolent forces on multiple occasions, whether it’s his regression to Majin Vegeta, Baby’s takeover of him, or even the brief Copy-Vegeta debacle. Vegeta is still able to come out of the other side okay and prove that he’s stronger than any possession. These evil forces consider him a worthier target than Goku.
3 He Carries Saiyan Customs Over To His Children
A very exciting development in the Dragon Ball franchise is that characters are allowed to evolve, grow older, and even start families. Vegeta and Goku both bring more Saiyans into the world, but they apply slightly different approaches to their children. Both value training, but Goku applies a more relaxed attitude to Gohan and Goten’s growth. Vegeta, on the other hand, exposes Trunks to many Saiyan customs and a rigorous childhood that’s somewhat representative of his own back on Planet Vegeta. He makes sure that his son doesn’t forget his roots.
2 He Creates A New Planet For The Saiyans
A major tragedy that’s gone on to define the Saiyan race is that the warrior people are largely extinct in Universe 7 because of Frieza’s destruction of Planet Vegeta. This results in Saiyans taking refuge on Earth, but a temporary alternative is introduced in Dragon Ball GT. The possessed Baby Vegeta creates a renewed home for his people, a new Planet Plant. Admittedly, this plan doesn’t exactly pan out, and Vegeta’s actions are influenced by an evil parasite, but it’s still a magnanimous gesture for the Saiyans that surpasses any of Goku’s actions.
1 He Holds An Intense Grudge Against Frieza
There is no shortage of tyrannical villains in Dragon Ball Z, and even though Frieza isn’t the strongest, he’s the franchise’s most resilient cockroach and one of the most popular antagonists. Frieza causes constant pain for the Saiyans in the present, but he’s also responsible for the destruction of their home planet and the genocide of most of their people. Vegeta never lets Frieza off the hook for this and his rage often gets the better of him. Alternatively, Goku becomes much more accepting of Frieza and even becomes a momentary ally to him.
